Braintree

I thought we started very brightly & deserved the early goal we scored in the 4th minute & should probably have added to it in the following 20 minutes.

Dan Bayliss then went off injured & we seemed to go into a bit of a lull for the remainder of the first half.

Braintree came out fired up for the second half & we spent about about 25 minutes playing deep & soaking up pressure until the introduction of Bala & Platt that seemed to provide much needed new energy & attacking impetus, which resulted in the second & third goal.

A good performance, a great win & a great three points, but the 3-0 final score did flatter us.

Yes good result especially since both Truro and Welling won so we didnt open the hoped for gap

Im pleased and not suprised at the result  High flying Braintree are second only to Yeovil in home games (points) won but have a very modest away record and there was discussion earlier in week about how poorly they play on plastic pitches.

I thought 3-0 was a fair reflection of a dominant Rebels performance, and was in no way flattering!

We had a bright opening 15 minutes and took an early lead, and could have raced into a bigger lead. Unfortunately that was it for the first half as the other 30 minutes was a bit of a non-event.

The second half was much like the opening 15 minutes with Slough doing most of the pressing, but with 70 minutes gone and the score still only 1-0 I thought we were still in trouble. Luckily Nathan Minhas took advantage of some sloppy defensive work to bag an overdue and deserved goal. A handball and penalty later sealed the win.

I honestly don't recall Dan Lincoln having a single save to make. Braintree had a couple of chances where he should have been tested, but both ended up in Lynch Hill's car park.

The only downer was Dan Bayliss coming off injured early on, with Joe Dandy (a substitute, who affected the game) replacing him. The other substitutes were Steven Bala and Mickel Platt, who also affected the game.

I only saw the first half but thought Minhas was excellent up front. Stretched the pitch, gave the defenders a torrid time and held the ball up well. Very pleased to hear he  scored in the second half as he had earnt that by work rate alone.

Braintree didn't impress me but I thought we were on it from the start. Not allowing them any time on the ball with good pressing across the park. Credit to our players and the coaches for that.

A solid performance giving us a very comfortable win in the end against a poor Braintree Town side.

A poor Braintree side that are sitting in the play-offs?

Sometimes a side play so well that they don't allow a team to perform at their best which imo is what happened yesterday.

Excellent 3 points keeping up the momentum to climb up the table away from any relegation fears.

I thought we played the game perfectly without any wingers keeping it solid against a young and energetic Braintree side.

Excellent early goal from Johnny Goddard which set the scene for the rest of the game where our experience, physicality and taking our opportunities were the deciding factors.

Deserved MOTM for Nathan Minhas who had his best and most effective game for us so far this season.

If he can keep up that sort of work rate and effort along with putting the ball in the net he'll be well worth his place in the team.

I never ceased to be amazed by the knowledge of some people on here with regard to players of non league teams other than Slough Town.
When we went to Welling recently, for some reason or other they hadn't produced  a match programme, instead charging us 20p for a teamsheet.
Listed as number 8 for us and down as a sub for the game on this sheet was someone called Craig Fasanmade.
"Who on earth is he ?"  I thought to myself.
In the lead up to kick off  I mentioned this unknown name to a group of fellow Rebel fans, and 2 or 3 of them ( may have been Bernie Gogan, Reading Rebel and Bonjour) all said
" He's a good player for Chippenham. Wouldn't mind if we signed him but that  sheet can't be right. Welling must have cocked that up."
I have to say I would be extremely unlikely to  remember any player we've played against this season ,or others.
Must be a sign of getting old.
Therefore I was very chuffed with myself to actually recognise the name of a player we signed recently.
Recognition wasn't when I heard that he played last season for Dorking, but was when I realised he'd played cricket for Berkshire.
I went to the Minor Counties 50 overs Final at Wormsley Park near Stokenchurch in August, and Dan Lincoln was the captain and wicket-keeper of the victorious Berkshire team who beat Cumbria ( again ) to win the trophy.
( 4th time in a row we've won the trophy and the 5th time in the past 6 seasons. )
He scored 15 with the bat, made 2 stumpings and took a catch in the match.
Great game it was. Exciting cricket in beautiful surroundings.
Having seen how he has performed for us in the few games he has played since he signed, I think he has made a massive impact on the Slough team.
To be honest, he hasn't had a great deal to do, which is a great thing to be able to say.
Massive credit must be given to Joe and Jeanmal, who have been immense in the last few matches.
Dan though, has a presence about him in the penalty box, which all goalkeepers need.
Although I watch our matches from the other end of the pitch away from Dan, it does seem that he shouts instructions at his defenders, which is something I like to see, which has been rather lacking this season.
I'm not saying he's the next Peter Schmeichel or anything like that, but when Farnborough were putting us under the cosh pushing for an equaliser for the last 10 minutes of the Trophy game recently, it was nice not to have to watch all those crosses and long throws being hurled into our 6 yard box through my fingers covering my eyes in intense trepidation.
Onto yesterday's game, and once again I groaned when I saw we only had one up front.
i shouldn't have moaned.
Nathan was outstanding yesterday.
Playing up against 2 big, strong, physical centre backs. he worked his socks off and it was great to see him score.
He deserved his Man of the Match award I thought.
There are some on here ( I won't mention any names but you know who you are ! 😄), who have in private made comments  about  Nathan that are not entirely glowing.
I have said in response that he should be given a bit more lee way and time to show what he can do, so forgive me if I have my smug face on at the moment. 😄
We are looking a very solid unit now, and I feel so much more confident that we will soon be climbing the table.
Bit of a shame the league season didn't start 10 games ago.

Of course supporters will have different views and will see games differently but I think in general terms players get the praise they deserve.

I have no problem admitting that I have been one of Nathan's critics and again imo up to yesterday with 4 months of the season gone I think the criticism has be justified.

Yesterday I saw a different Nathan Minhas to what I've been witnessing so far, effort, movement, causing defenders problems and of course scoring a very good goal.

Of course there is the old saying about one Swallow not making a Summer 😅 but if he can keep up that sort of performance I'll have no problem singing his praises.

Glen there always the chance we didn't let them play better.

I think they showed glimpses of why they are in a play-off position creating a few good chances but in general we were excellent and imo stiffled them and snuffed out any danger created.

But I don’t think we played our very best, we were good, solid and in spells played some nice stuff but it certainly wasn’t a performance up there with the best. If Braintree play like that more often than not they won’t stay in the play offs that’s for sure.

The way we picked the team yesterday meant that it was never going to be a spectacle! Sorry 😅

It was efficient, and the boys did exactly what we asked of them.

Im just looking at the stats, 17 shots, 5 on target for us. 6 shots, 0 on target for them. We made 273 passes, they made 315.

The maths tells me that we had a shot for every 16 passes made, they had a shot for every 53 passes made. We didn’t want to make it into a possession based/football match, as that’s what they enjoy it playing in. We got the ball forward and quickly.

But hey ho, sometimes it’s good to win ugly!

I think the majority of fans would accept non sexy football and 3 points Scott! Keep playing ugly I say!

As I said we were excellent at stiffling their play and snuffing them out.

You don't always have to play pretty flowing football to win a game.

Our line up and tactics were spot on which made Braintree look average which obviously they're not.

Great stuff Kev, keep it up! That 20p "match programme" still irks me!
