FA Cup 1st Round - Slough v Grimsby

Thought it was an excellent long interview with Scotty earlier today.
He came across very well, and by association, so did the club.
Great to see his enthusiasm and excitement about the game on Sunday.
I'm sure all us fans feel exactly the same.
I know I do.
When the draw was announced, I thought it was a great draw.
At home, after 3 difficult away ties, against a Football League team stuggling for form and confidence.
Win, lose or draw on Sunday, it has been really enjoyable the past few weeks anticipating this cup-tie.
Should we win on Sunday?
On paper, definitely no.
Can we ?
Of course we can, although all the stars will have to align in our favour for us to do so.
When we beat Millwall and Walsall, both times I believe there were 3 Divisions between us and our lofty opponents.
On Sunday there are only 2 !
I was very surprised to hear on the coach coming back from Eastbourne last week, that Grimsby had sacked their manager.
Seems a very strange time to have done it.
Their "stand-in" bosses are really on a hiding to nothing.
What a first game for them to take charge, a massive potential banana skin and "humiliation" away to a non-league team on a plastic pitch.
As Scotty referred to in his interview, out of the hundreds of non-league teams that started in the FA Cup this season, only 32 remain, and we are one of them.
That's a massive accomplishment we have achieved already.
It isn't often that the saying "we have absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain" is valid.
It is for us on Sunday.
I can't wait.

some background
it's a sell out on Sunday. This is possibly their biggest game for a generation having been nomads for years.
They are one of the smallest clubs in conference south, average crowds under 1000 and a part time club in a sea of professional teams,
Scott Davies the player manager is still a very good player and very intelligent young coach (ex Aylesbury Grammar School). Some of you may remember him from when he scored a penalty against us at Aldershot and milked it to the full. Was destined for big things before his weaknesses took hold. takes a sublime free kick. Tells me the has no injuries and has a plan! very good battling side - a team whose sum is greater than their parts.
Aylesbury United have a big interest in Sunday's game. Scott is Aylesbury born and bred and he has a local legend,Jefferson Louis, as fitness coach. Jefferson is as fit as a flea and has had as many clubs as he has had birthdays!
Jeanmal Prosper may feature - was playing step 5 about 6 seasons ago until Ben Williams at AUFC spotted him. Made a transformational change to a struggling team and has kicked on since then, will enjoy seeing him again - the only right back I've seen who only rarely popped up at right back, so busy was he marauding elsewhere! his wife worked for my wife n they've just had their first baby
Tom McElroy may feature from the bench -ex AGS & Loughborough Uni, son of a surgeon.very young but very strong forward who has an eye for the goals and was a stand out player for Aylesbury.
Had a loan keeper from Arsenal but binned him after 3 days due to poor attitude. Lutrhra is completely different - young, but huge n v. competent.
Josh Jackman is your archetypal lower league defender and club captain. Been with them for years and a massive presence.
They've got  a couple of midfielders in Jackson n Lench who should possibly be playing higher, but are well paid n happy with their lot.Jackson in particular is a quality operator. Along with Scott it makes up a v. strong midfield.
George Alexander up front is on loan from our favourite hate club - Bromley. Also up front is nathan Minhas who's had a perpatetic career until 3 years ago. Seemed to then grasp the opportunity and scored 50+ goals in 2 seasons at a level below (step 3) for Beaconsfield

their ace in the pack is David Ogbonna, v.v. quick, skillful right winger . had played at step 4 for several years where he was the outstanding player for Hertford, but just seemed happy playing with his mates. He ripped Aylesbury, and a number of other Southern League clubs to shreds, last season. Somehow Scott managed to persuade him to go for it and he's prospered. there's some youtube videos of his extravagant pace n skills. He could easily rip Amos to shreds if he's on his game.really good player
I hope to be able to report more after our meal on Saturday night but mums the word till then!

The above was written by a Grimsby fan on their Forum.

Seems a quite respectful and fairly knowledgeable (in parts) breakdown of our team, although does anybody know who this "Jackson" fella is who is apparently one of our best players ?

Decent and quite knowledgeable write up but for a few errors.

'Biggest game for a generation?'

How longs a generation?

I'd say there's been some bigger, Kings Lynn and Kettering being much bigger and then you have the Gillingham and Rochdale games.

Jefferson Louis?

And then our ace midfield player Jackson?

Can only think it's Johnny Goddard he's talking about.

Glad to hear the Grimsby fans have been given the whole East side of the ground which should mean we get both end stands. Looking forward to seeing and hearing around 1,000 Slough fans packed behind the goal creating a loud atmosphere.

I thought the area behind the goal only held 800?

I don't know about Millwall, but for Walsall I'm sure we were separated by four divisions not three, so we've definitely pulled off more unlikely upsets than Sunday (without wishing to play down Sunday should we win)! We've also beaten teams from "only" two divisions higher before in Qualifying Rounds.

One thing we certainly should NOT be doing on Sunday is being in awe of our opponents. We can do this COYR

I use that road several times a week usually and its arguably the worst kept road on the planet, I've seen tracks in the Himalayas in better condition.

A sign went up about ten days ago informing of road works so I'm hoping its all being re done finally, I'll go that way in the next day or two and see what's happening and post on here.

Praise the lord, hallelujah!

Delighted to say the road is completely open and has been resurfaced end to end.

Apart from Birmingham who had an ex Slough player in the team and Swansea we have given every other big club a game.

These include

Millwall Walsall Orient Rochdale Bristol Cardiff Reading Mansfield Gillingham Macclesfield etc.

So COYREBELS give it your best and leave it all on the pitch.

Nathan was not BMF thought we played Rovers or City but it was Plymouth.

Also added to the top 2 teams i named  was Colchester.

With the 2nd round draw taking place whilst ours is in play we’re technically in the draw. So by half time we will know our potential opponents which could be a massive lift/incentive for the 2nd half. If we were losing but knew we’d be home to one of the big boys it could make for a very exciting last 45 minutes!

After drawing blanks in both game against  Rochdale & Gillingham i'd love to hear the roar of the first ever goal scored at Arbour Park against a League side & how big a part us fans could make. All the pressure is on Grimsby ,& this is a free hit with nothing to lose that i'm really looking forward to.

COYR ( serve with honour).

Obviously the money is very welcome but I just don’t understand what attraction our match is to all these countries!
