FA Cup 1st Round - Slough v Grimsby

I've just stumbled on this video and remembered you mentioning it:

I agree with every word Jeff says here. It's grossly unfair that Maidstone get as far as they have only to be drawn against Stevenage or Port Vale. TV aren't likely to be interested (though they've yet to be announced), yet Man Utd will probably be shown (because they usually are in the FA Cup). Arsenal vs Liverpool I'd say is a dead cert for TV coverage, despite not really being what the magic of the FA Cup is all about; they play each other in the Premier League twice a season. Unless you're an Arsenal or Liverpool fan, do you really care?

The same goes for Eastleigh, who were drawn away vs Newport County or Barnet (so possibly an all non-league tie in the 3rd round).

Nathan when I watched it on YouTube he also mentioned his team Hartlepool  who ended up playing and losing to Oxford United in 2020 he was not happy.

He is so right in what he says. Slighhty different when we  beat Millwall and Walsall then end up against and losing to Bishops Stortford @ Hayes@Yeading what disappointing draws and games they were.

I think there's a case for seeding the draw for the first round as well (though maybe not for teams in the National League Premier). This season Worthing were drawn away vs Alfreton, not a draw either side wanted, and the tie has passed completely unnoticed. Hardly a reward for a good run.

We got lucky this season in that sense, but not so in previous seasons, when we've drawn Sutton United (away), Gainsborough Trinity (away), Mansfield Town (in the Conference at the time, also away) and little Harrogate Railway Athletic (they went through 5 rounds only to be drawn away vs Slough), all very disappointing draws for both us and the opposition. Only in 2004 and this season have we drawn Football League clubs in the First Round, that's 2 out of 6 times since I've been following the Rebels.

Surprise surprise! Of the 6 games to be shown, 3 are all-Premier League ties (including Arsenal vs Liverpool), 2 Championship vs Premier Leagues ties (so all sides who enter at this stage), and the mandatory Man Utd tie. Poor Maidstone, Eastleigh and Barnet (should they win their replay) get nothing for their achievement.

Nathan,

Sky & BT/TNT have just signed a new 4 season deal to pay approximately £6 million per Premier League match.

So, if you or I were making this decision for ITV or BBC wouldn’t we select all Premier League league matches if we only had to pay £170,000 for them?

And that’s before you even consider audiences (which TV programming is largely about), where 3 million will probably sit down & watch Arsenal v Liverpool….. how many would likely watch Barnet v Eastleigh?

That's the problem Curtis. Of the 12 teams featured in televised games, 11 have yet to kick a ball in this seasons competition. It's as if the previous 8 rounds didn't happen.

And I'm sure that both Arsenal and Liverpool would rather that 3 points were on offer rather than a place in the 4th round!

No-one will watch Barnet vs Eastleigh, that's my point. Hence why the 3rd round draw should be seeded, so small teams are guaranteed their "moment in the sun".

There is a  National League South side in the 4th round. 6th tier Maidstone have just beaten 3rd tier Stevenage.

Congratulations to the TV executives for missing out on a massive upset 👏👏👏

It’s the kind of result which makes me glad the third round isn’t seeded. Maidstone realistically wouldn’t have had the chance to progress and pick up the prize money like they did today, and Sutton United wouldn’t have reached the fifth round years ago.

Yet they haven't received the exposure or TV money that they should have got. It's all about rewarding smaller teams for cup success. The TV saw Maidstone v Stevenage and thought "this is a nothing tie that nobody's going to watch". Sides can go on these runs, only to get a "nothing" draw and be almost completely ignored by the media.

The TV really do pick some baffling ties to show (https://www.live-footballontv.com/live-fa-cup-football-on-tv.html); mostly clubs who have yet to kick a ball in this season's competition, whereas non-league "fairy-tales" get ignored. There are a couple of Premier League vs League One ties they've overlooked as well. And as for Shrewsbury vs Wrexham (League One vs League Two, with the higher league team at home), would this really be shown if not for the romanticism surrounding Wrexham?

And Maidstone realistically weren't expected to progress today, never mind who they would have got in a seeded draw! I get your point about being able to cause another upset and progress, but do you really think they were pleased to be drawn against Stevenage over a Premier League team, for the sake of a slightly higher chance of progressing?

Football is corrupt due to the vulgar amounts of money the TV companies have put into the top end and the sporting side is now on its way out.

This win for Maidstone could be to our advantage as we play them at home the week before the 4th round.

Hopefully they draw a big premiership club and their heads will be elsewhere when we play them.

The fact they are in the 4th round could also boost the attendance for our game with them.

The likelihood is that the Maidstone cup run will provide them with a good bundle of funds to add a couple of players in January & improve their chances of promotion.

They’re already earned around £225,000 just from prize money. Add in shared gate receipts, extra sponsorship and no doubt a guaranteed live tv money in the next round they’ll be making around £400,000 in total.

And their ground isn't owned by a skint council who want the prize money!

You'd think that a minnow making it this far would be enough to guarantee a TV tie, regardless of who they've drawn against. But if their 3rd round game vs Stevenage wasn't shown whereas 2 Premier League vs Championship ties were, then who knows?

Slough Council are not alone.

Listening to the news a lot of councils are either on the verge or have gone bankrupt.

Austerity/cut backs and lack of funding from the government.

Does that include if they draw a big club like Spurs away in the next round 😏

Maidstone drawn away vs Ipswich Town. Eastleigh potentially could play Man Utd, (should they win their replay and Man Utd beat Wigan).

Already the media headlines are focusing on the Spurs vs Man City fixture!

It'll be a shame if Spurs have to play Man City with key players still missing.

If the two clubs are sensible & agree an average ticket price of £15-£20 for this match there could be an attendance of 20,000+……. which would be a great pay day for Maidstone.
