v Weymouth

The F.A. in their infinite wisdom sadly chose the Isthmian (Diadora) League for this trial.

I believe you could take either a normal throw-in or an indirect free kick if the ball went out of play on the touchline.

After the 5 minute novelty of this gimmick wore off, I think it reduced games to a boring spectacle of route one football.

I've since read that St. Albans manager banned his players from taking a kick-in.

I think, like a normal throw-in, there was no off-side from those kick-ins, so all that was used to happen was that teams would throw many players into the penalty box and hoof the ball forward hoping for something to happen.

Skilful players such as a Johnny Goddard or Matty Lench would  not be required very much, as midfield was just bypassed for much of the match.

Thankfully this experiment ended after just the one season.

This idea was a solution to a problem that I think doesn't exist.

Be careful what you wish for Scotty!

My fading memory cells tell me that this was an awful thing to happen to the game.

Just viewed the highlights and our best two chances of the game fell to Nathan Minhas who failed to hit the target with only the keeper to beat.

The second one was where Minhas latched onto a bad back pass and with the keeper stranded really should have had a shot himself but instead decided to pass to George Alexander and unfortunately for him the ball seemed to get stuck under his feet and the chance went begging.

Agree HR.

The experiment was a total failure with a throw in becoming a free kick with no off sides from the kick-in.

Kick-ins became such a big advantage players became more interested in trying to get a kick-in than actually playing football.

I spoke to Bobby Wilkinson after the game and he said that he set his Weymouth team up to Nick a point. He highlighted our defence, probably because he had Temi & Dan at Bracknell, and how attack minded we are and was delighted his plan worked. Full of praise for Scotty and our team but goes to show how important a point is away from home in this league.

In his interview Wilkinson said if you can't win a game then don't lose it which say's everything you need to know about how they approached the game.

We went from a back 4 to a back 3 which allowed us to get an extra body in the centre of the pitch and to release Josh and Ty to get a further forward.

Temi, Dan and I have played in a back 3 on 4 occasions and have won 3 and drawn 1 and only conceded 1 goal away at dartford, so I wanted to revert back to that shape for the last 20 minutes as it’s been pretty good to us in the past month.

A word for the group 'The small strings'.

I thought they were excellent and I hope they'll be paying further visits in the future.

Certainly imo they were more suitable for our club house than a rock band blasting your ears out 😅

I thought Slough started well and should have been 2 or 3 goals up by half time.Just didn't take the chances that came our way.

Second half both teams were dire and I thought we messed up our substitutions [wrong players in wrong positions] and lost any chance of winning the game. For me Weymouth were for the taking but Slough looked like they were playing for a draw !

Two valuable league points dropped in my eyes.

Agreed. Trying to take a positive from the match, I think that we'd have lost had it been 4/5 weeks ago.

I remembered hating this trial back in the day - if I recall correctly, we were winning 3-1 at Aylesbury until they utilised these kick-ins to score twice in injury-time to absolutely steal an unlikely point. Best left in the past!

didn’t agree with Dom coming off as I felt he was playing well and still carried a threat. Of course there are no easy games but yesterday was certainly a very winnable one and I just hope we don’t come to regret it. It’s a real shame we couldn’t have put on a show and win with a big crowd in place.

I thought Dom was looking tired just prior to be subbed & thought Ogbonna injected a lot of pace & energy and looked like a late threat.

I recall that Lee Harvey who played for Aylesbury at the time (signed for us after we were promoted), could launch the ball from way back in his own half into opposition penalty areas. Great tactic!

I don't have a problem with kick ins as long as they are limited to a short pass to restart the game. This would overcome the nicking of several yards when throwing the ball in.
