An intriguing all Step 7 clash between 4th in the Herts County and, in their debut season, the leaders of Spartan South Midlands 2.
As the result suggests, the sides were well-matched. Twice Welwyn led, with two first half goals sandwiching Cuffley’s equaliser from a penalty, as well as the miss of the season by the visitors’ Yearwood, who burst through the defence and rounded the keeper but then rolled his finish wide of an empty net! In the interests of balance, I should add that the same player selflessly set up Welwyn’s first and smashed home their second, so he’s in credit for the day!
Chances at both ends in the second half but Cuffley’s pressure finally paid off in the 82nd minute, a fine turn and shot in the box levelling things up.
So to pens, Welwyn went first and hit the bar, then missed twice more (one saved, one wide), meaning Cuffley went through without needing their final kick.
Both sides would’ve fancied their chances of a good run in this competition so this was a good tie to win and, judging by the singing wafting across the car park from the changing room after the game, duly celebrated in time-honoured fashion.
Very much a County League set-up here, and a pitch that slopes gently from each end into the middle and, more pronouncedly, from side to side. There are also a couple of outer pitches as well as tennis courts and a bowling green, all served by a suitably sizeable car park. Smart Clubhouse, emblazoned with Club crest, and doing a steady trade today with drinks and hot food available, as well as showing both the football and golf on Sky. And all nicely situated in a scenic spot in the Herts countryside.

It's rather odd isn't it that nobody pointed out the London Colney v Letchworth Garden City Eagles Quarter Final tie was played afterall on Tuesday 21 November with Letchworth Garden City Eagles the victors on penalties following a 1-1 draw. They will host the winners of the Hoddesdon Town and Cuffley tie taking place at Lowfield on Tuesday (12 December):
