Straight choice between this one and the match at Yateley with both home sides entering the competition for the first time. Chose this one as it was easier to get to and I didn’t have to contend with the M25 going past Heathrow !!
Fair to say that these two clubs are poles apart with the visitors being relegated at the end of last season, and despite this being billed as the biggest match in Eaton Socon’s history, the crowd of 133 was disappointing especially as a fair amount had travelled from Soham.
Soham scored twice in the first 16 minutes and it looked to be a case of how many would they end up with. A Jordan Chipps free kick was won by the head of the giant Jordan Grant and Ryan Sharman was on hand to prod home the opener, and then a Chipps free kick was cleared back to him and his second delivery was half volleyed home by Ed Watson from 6 yards. The third came on the stroke of half time with a low acute angled drive from Byron Adiado into the far corner.
Sharman was replaced by Sam Mulready at the start of the second half and within two minutes, Mulready was on the scoresheet with his first effort from close range being scuffed but made no mistake with his second chance. The rain then came down and the match seemed to die as a spectacle although Eaton Socon had the ball in the net but it was disallowed for offside, but they did get a consolation on 83 minutes when two substitutes combined - Brad Brown with the cross which was finished by Malique Roach.
First time at Eaton Socon where the only area to escape the rain was behind the goal with just flat standing everywhere else. I hear that they only printed 20 copies of the programme, as it’s normally available online, although I couldn’t see where on their website.
