The Friendlies

Just thought I'd start this topic being that we are playing our first one on Saturday. What does amaze me is how many friendly games we actually have this season, I counted eleven. That does seem a high number to the usual amount. What is the thinking behind such a large number? Scott may have told this in one of his interviews but I don't remember hence asking.

I think due to the fact there will be 13/14 trialists playing in the first game we need a few games to assess and whittle that particular group down to maybe 3 or 4 and then see if any are good enough to sign. Then we have the main squad with alot of new players to gel. Then we have the very important goalkeeper situation to sort out and again with a few to look at we need games to do that. Finally I’m sure a few A23 players will be included too to again assess and see the potential of any to progress into the first team squad but not necessarily at the start of the season.

I don't know about anyone else but I've never played or watched a game that was 'friendly'.

Have to agree, all the years I played especially with the Alpha, Slough Heating and ICI, we didn't do 'friendlies'

Lost 3-4 to Burnham. Squad (attached) made up of trialists from various levels plus a few A23 players. You can’t read much into friendlies at the best of times but today it’s most likely none of these 19 players (ok possibly Gabe…) will start in our first league game. Hopefully it was a worthwhile exercise for our management and there were some players to take another look at.

  • 3 weeks later...

With the season starting in just over two weeks, and with us now into a run of four home friendlies I think I will be getting along to a match and having a look at our new signings & how the squad is shaping up.

I’m not sure if Uxbridge will be much of an indicator but Banbury from the National North could be a good guide as to where we are.
