Non league player contract changes

It seems extraordinary that these new arrangements appear to have been dropped on non-league football without consultation/discussion with players' representatives. That said, Robbie Savage, discussing this issue on Radio Five Live this morning, told the programme that his so-called "grassroots" team at Step 4 had 15/16 players on contract, one of whom was supporting his family in France, who could not possibly cope on statutory sick pay of around £99 a week. Further evidence, if any were needed, of the disparities in resources that we all know exist at "our" level.

The thinking apparantly is to protect clubs from malingerers Surely that could be dealt with by regular medical checks?
