Jimi Hendrix Experience - Stockholm Concert ’69 (Purple Haze Records)

JUST five months before the Jimi Hendrix Experience imploded, they played two shows in Stockholm, the second, by common consent, considerably better than the first.

Judge for yourself on this two-disc set which includes both gigs, featuring extended jams of Voodoo Chile (Slight Return), Spanish Castle Magic, Red House, Hey Joe, Sunshine Of Your Love and others.

Unlike the barrel-scraping album of out-takes from the Axis: Bold As Love sessions, the Stockholm concerts are a worthy rave from the grave.

The recordings are reasonable quality for the era and Hendrix’s performances veer from the inspired (Hey Joe on the second night) to the cackhanded (Sunshine Of Your Love on the first night).

It’s an eye-opener to recall just how much gig time the average guitar hero had to spend simply re-tuning his axe in the days before electronic tuners.

And it has to be said that even the genius of Hendrix is hard put to make a 12-bar blues like Red House hold your full attention for its full 11 minutes-plus span.

On the guitar tuning front, if you string your axe properly, then you don't have a problem. The digital tuner just makes it more accurate.
