v St Albans City

The Wi Fi was a problem at Clarence Park yesterday for sure, we got a drink from the cans only bar at the corner of the ground and we got it for free, cheers St,Albans City and thanks for the 3 points!!

It's donkeys years since we got anything from there so well overdue.

On the subject of attendances, they seem to have benefitted from the Enter Shikari band sponsorship, and last year's FA Cup run plus they've added a DJ style pre match show and a  sprinkling of bars and food outlets around the ground. Barring the rock band sponsorship (don't know any prominent ones locally myself) perhaps we could look at our hospitality and entertainment. There's a bit of a Dulwich vibe with beer available all game around the ground.

I know we're a bit limited because it's a Slough Council facility and we can't just do things as perhaps other clubs can. At the very least we have room around the ground for franchise stand alone facilities. Plenty of local breweries may be interested.

Just a thought!!

Great idea regarding different food and drink stalls but I’m guessing the council wouldn’t be up for it.

Despite the fact that St Albans always seem to charge more than other clubs to get into their ground to see a game, I've always enjoyed going there.

It's a typical old fashioned non-league football ground, with loads of character which modern stadium just don't possess. ( In my eyes anyway.)

I guess it's because of these qualities that St Albans F.C. was the base for an episode in the last "Endeavour" TV detective series, when a young Inspector Morse had to deal with a case involving a centre forward with a non-league club who were doing well in the F.A. Cup.

There were loads of shots of the ground itself plus inside views of stuff like the dressing rooms.

Well, I enjoyed it !

Having paid by card my 16.50 to get in, I was gleefully told soon after by other Rebel fans that more or less straight after I'd gotten into the ground ,the turnstile credit card machine had packed up and they had all gotten into the ground for free !

I do wonder how many fan's got in without having to pay ?

Serves St Alban's right for being a 'cash free arena'.

A tense game was coming towards the final whistle, when I became aware of a bloke standing next to me.

I was standing behind the goal, and as I didn't recognise him as someone who attended Slough away games I assumed he was a home fan.

"How long to go ? " he asked.

"Five minutes" , I replied.

" You come from Slough ? " was his next question.

I was wanting to pay my full attention to what was happening on the pitch, but said politely,  " Well, I live now near Maidenhead, but grew up in Slough, in Wexham, just across the road from Wexham Park."

' Wexham Park ?   I used to play there ",  he came back to me with.

Now intrigued, I asked him, "What's your name?".

" Rowan Dodds"  he replied.

Straight away that name took me back 40+ years.

It was great to see him.

Seems he now lives in Milton Keynes, and occasionally goes to watch an M.K. Dons match.

Right at the final whistle, he dashed away.

It was a bit of a coincidence seeing a well known Slough player from the past, as only a few hours previous, just half an hour before kick off to be precise, I had said to another Rebels fan that the 50 year anniversary of Slough's

only trip to Wembley was coming up in a few weeks time.

I know we had the Wembley shirt produced recently, but I was wondering if the club had any plans to formally acknowledge such a significant landmark.

Half a century.

That's a long time.

I was there even though I don't recall very much about it.

Makes me feel very old !

Anyway, fantastic result yesterday.

Everyone worked their socks off and deserved to get the 3 points.

I see Lenchy hadn't learnt his lesson.

Was it Worthing away when he scored and got booked for taking a sneaky drink from a happy Rebels fans glass during his celebration ?

He did it again yesterday, this time without receiving a yellow card.

It is amusing to see though.

Let's hope for another 3 points on Tuesday.

Although football was a fair bit different back then, Rowan Dodds' strike record of 113 goals in 275 appearances is well worthy of celebration. Always remember his superb headed opening goal in the 2-2 FA cup draw at Brisbane Road. It's funny how differently some footballers from the past respond when asked their names. When Ian Cooke came to Horsham with the reborn AFC Wimbledon he told us that he had played for Slough after he left the old Wimbledon (something they seem reluctant to acknowledge btw) but made me "guess" who he was. Fortunately I got it right first time.  It helped that he hadn't changed much in about 30years.

It was a great away day, 3 points being well deserved and needed.

Too many games this year we have been the better team but have lost to poor luck, ref decisions or random mistakes.

Let's hope we can push on for the rest of the Season now to keep us clear of the relegation battle.

Great overall team performance by all players, let's have the same again on Tuesday.

I thought we played very well one the day, clearly had a plan and it worked excellently. I thought the defence (including Will Dennis) had excellent games and kept a good on paper if not the day St Albans team at every turn. Other players that deserve great credit for me were Ogo for the running top to bottom, back to front, never stopped and even looked annoyed to be subbed off. In addition, and brace yourselves for this one, I thought MoM was Matt Lench. Worked harder than I've seen for a long, long time, took his goal very well and general performance was excellent.

A few not so good IMO, Scotty himself had a mixed day. Did some excellent work (the free kick obviously) as well as some good defensive positions towards the end, but also mis-placed more passes than normal and got caught a couple of times with allowing the #11 (who I thought along with the #2 were St Albans best players) to turn and get at our defence. Goddard and Benyon whilst ran around really weren't great and yet again Benyon missed a free header from 6-8 yards out in the 1st 5 minutes by putting it straight at the keeper. As 2 of the more senior players, they need to start getting some output from goals and assists or need dropping and allowing others to have a go. Luckily the others in the team performed well enough to see us across the line.

The ref was extremely poor on the day. His use of the yellow cards was shocking (we counted 8 in total, might be wrong on that, 6-2 split to Slough) apart from Benyon's that was an "Italian" foul to break up the game, there wasn't a bad tackle in the match. In addition, there is no way in the world the pen that was given was a pen. #11 again, moved past Dandy (I think) and dived and the ref bought it. Having said that, I am 100% certain that he was evening things up as 5 minutes prior he didn't give a mugging 12 yards out on Jeffers that was a stone wall pen.

We always, around this time of year do a points prediction based on each game to go in the season. Started 3 games ago and so far I had down 3 points in those 3 games, but had 3 against Welling and none v Dartford and St Albans, so I'm on track currently. Getting the 3 yesterday was massive for us, with 2 tough home games  to come, but the bigger fixtures are on the horizon with Concord away and Hungerford at home the following week. A big 4 matches to come and if we can perform like yesterday in those games, we could be much further on in our bid for safety.

To sum up, an excellent result to right the wrong of last Saturday and a positive step in form and confidence before 2 big weeks for the club.

Oi SF,

That's my job to give praise to Lenchy  😅

In my earlier post I said that I thought Lenchy had previously been booked in another game for sneaking a drink from a fan after scoring a goal.

A very reliable Rebels fan  ( Thank you Bonjour ) has pointed out to me that I may be mistaken, and that the guilty party that earlier time was in fact someone else.

( I'm not saying who in case I've got it wrong again and I stain someone else's character mistakenly ! )

I now think he is  correct, as I do seem to remember more clearly what happened at a previous match.

Apologies to Lenchy.if I have caused any damage to his good character and reputation.

Well, that wasn't a penalty, should have been a free kick if anything and the previous one where Jeffers barged between 2 players also never a penalty.

We don't seem to get our fair share of luck with penalties either for or against!!

Cheers for clearing that up anyway as I said to my other half I thought I'd seen an ex player in Rowan Dodds.

Just watched the highlights and you could argue that for our second goal Ogo was in an offside position and interfering with the keepers vision.

But to even it out the foul given for their penalty was definitely outside the area.

What hasn't been mentioned is how many goals we have let in the first ten minutes of the second half that has always put the team on the backfoot so what a change for us to score during this period.

I said on the coach we would win.     2 - 1 and was shouting our James Ward Prowse to score the free kick when Scott lined up for his goal.

Didn't want to mention the goals conceded early in the second half SD as I like to look at the positives in our game rather than the negatives :laugh(2):

I can vouch that you did predict a 2-1 win for the Rebels but you're slipping because you normally go for a 2-0 win 😉
