Wingate

Few questions/thoughts today

Why was Andy in the car park?  Was he banned?

Was that the worst 1st half we ll play this year?

Whats the Kipling saying...keep your head when all those around you are losing theirs?   Was certainly an uphill battle after the red...which I didnt see as was sat on the opposite side of the ground.   Did anyone see what the red was for?

Some of the worst time wasting Ive seen all year...but we have to do better too.

Finally.  Ive seen a few games at home this year and frustrated to say Ive yet to see a consistent set of officials.

Least the 2nd half improved on the first.

Glad that a fan has been banned too.

Where do you start with today?

Ps.  Stunning overhead kick for any level of football.

Didn’t see Scott’s ‘offence’ either but the Wingate player appeared to be taking revenge on him after a clean, tough tackle. If it was retaliation then it nearly cost the game and we lose Scott for 3 matches. There was another incident in the second half which could have had a similar outcome. Important Town learn these lessons.

Wingate went down at every opportunity which refs at this level always seem to reward. Nonetheless they fought hard and defended well and the draw was a fair result.

Great second half effort from the 10 men which nearly got the three points.

Abysmal first half from us reminding me of the kingstonian match, whingegate scored a fabulous bicycle kick goal scored by there standout player who unfortunately was given the freedom of our penalty area they also hit the bar with another effort with Nathan well beaten, town offered nothing apart from Thomas grabbing one of there players by the throat and getting sent off. The second half cass came on and we had a bit more purpose about us but we still didn’t really trouble there keeper the game turned with the sending off of there number 6 who didn’t want to leave the field and eventually ended up in with the crowd at the side of the pitch wanting to fight a home supporter the stewards finally ushering the player away I hope whingegate take action as he was a disgrace. Thankfully Lyle rescued a point for us from a free kick with 5 minutes to go it was a shame we put on a performance like that in front of a large crowd

Strange afternoon at the QE2. We've put ourselves in with a shot at promotion, but we need a fair amount of luck if we're going to achieve that this season. For my money, I reckon finishing 3rd (behind Hornchurch - who are splashing the cash, and Bishops Stortford) is probably the best we can achieve, but its a funny old game!

Back to today... I get it, we've out-muscled a fair few teams recently with long balls up to Cunnington. The trouble is: (1) We're actually a better footballing side than that; (2) Its not really a style of football to excite the fans. Whilst Adam won ALOT of headers today, Wingate did a good job of clearing up the second ball. The Wingate keeper also dealt with pretty much every cross thrown into the box.

The Wingate goal was nothing short of brilliant - well worth a watch on the highlights when they come out. A cross-field ball to their right wing is volleyed into the box first time where the diminutive No.10 hit an overhead kick which Nathan could only watch sail into the top right-hand corner of the net.

The sending off. I was a long way away, but it looked like handbags to me. I think everyone was surprised when the red card came out.

Pleasing that we managed to come back from that position and claim a draw. There are going to be tough days like that over a season. Yes, we could've won it, but I think we might view that as a point gained rather than two points dropped come the end of the season.

Not a great deal of insight to add to the comments already posted, most of them sum things up pretty well... very lacklustre first half, with neither side covering themselves in glory, however the one moment of quality from Wingate definitely deserved to give them the lead. It was certainly one of the best goals I've seen at this level, and sometimes you just have to stand back and applaud. Didn't see the sending off incident, but the game seemed a little tetchy at times up until that point, and it felt like someone might see red, especially with the referee being quite picky / over officious in my view. Any time you raise your hands (if that is what happened) you are asking for trouble, and we should know better, especially an experienced player like Thomas.

Second half we made the exact change that I thought was needed - getting Cass on, and going 2 up top and even more direct - it wasn't pretty, but it probably was our best chance of getting something from the game with a man disadvantage. Credit has to go to the Wingate defence, who scrapped for every ball, and competed well in the air, and especially to their keeper, whose handling from set pieces was assured throughout. We probably did just about deserve the equaliser for our efforts with 10, and could have even gone on to win it had they gone down to 10 earlier, but as TCC mentioned, getting a point from a game that was 11 vs. 10 for that length of time is definitely a point gained in my view.
