Was originally going to do a double header up north, but the recent rain made me change my plans as I didn’t want a wasted trip, and to be totally honest, I didn’t want to get up early enough for a 1.00 kick off in either Wigan or Preston! Instead I chose a first visit to Bedfordshire to Shefford and it proved to be a good choice with a match that got better as the evening wore on.
Not the biggest of crowds for this local derby - maybe the lure of France v Australia was too much for some, and a first for me, a Referee who was wearing gloves! More of him later on as he took centre stage at certain times during the evening.
Infact it was Mr Binney, in charge for the night, who pointed to the spot on 14 minutes when the home full back, Dan Hammer, theatrically went over the foot of Josh Sturniolo, and Sam King stepped up to fire the penalty into the bottom left corner to put Shefford ahead.
Just before the hour, United equalised when Taylor Rhiney’s through ball picked out the run of Milo Keane, and he neatly slid the ball past keeper Kyle Forster to make it 1-1. Within seven minutes and Mr Binney awarded another penalty to Shefford for a high foot, which to most of us looked a pretty harsh decision. Once again, King stepped up and put the spot kick into the same corner of the net as previously. Almost straight away United equalised again with a low 30 yarder from Cameron Hyde that Forster should really have made a better effort than he did to prevent the ball finding the net. For the last 23 minutes it was like a basketball match with chances at both ends and it was an absorbing finish to the match as both sides fancied their chances to get the three points. It didn’t happen and Forster produced a couple of excellent saves to earn his side a deserved point.
At the end of the match, Mr Binney was confronted by the visiting management team and there were allegations that he had sworn at them. Whether that happened, I couldn’t hear but what I did hear was Mr Binney saying that that’s how he speaks (presumably the f word is in his vocabulary) and the arguments continued all the way back to the dressing rooms. It was a bizarre end and I guess that the visiting team will be giving Mr Binney a pretty damning report.
