FA Vase Second Round

WeII known groundhopper 'TaIes From The Riverbank' from another Forum was in attendance, he's a 'wordsmith'. A disappointing attendance of just 129:

Biggleswade United 3 v 0 London Lions - FA Vase 2nd Round
Programme 32 pages £1.00 - Admission £7.00 (nc) - Att. 129.

Despite the sultry November temperatures, the inertia gene I fear is creeping in with the easiest of easy days out winning over the considered alternatives of Wallingford & Crowmarsh, Larkfield & New Hythe or Newark & Sherwood. The combined lures of a rare printed programme from the hosts (normally they are huge mb online) and that both teams were in similar positions in their respective leagues indicating a close game were ultimately the determinants. Problem was that over the duration of the contest, it was surprisingly one sided with London Lions being particularly disappointing and barely mustering a shot on goal over the duration. All of this came as a surprise as the visitors provided one of the Level 5 performances of the season thus far when they demolished Broadfields United 6-0 back in August. Did notice though that there were several changes in personnel between the two teams.
Overall, I was not overly impressed by Biggleswade United either, they dominated midfield but against mediocre opponents this was not an overly difficult task. For a large portion of the contest, in addition they were too tentative in their approach, over-estimating any threat from the visitors. The first half rarely reached any heights, though Biggleswade United had the better opportunities which largely evolved from the pace and accompanying crosses from Markel Cousins on the right. The direction of shooting was flawed though as a side footed half volley by Milo Keare sent an early corner from Cousins soaring high over the upright. Cousins on occasion attempted shots himself with limited results with a well struck chip being directed straight at Tiernan Potter who caught with ease and then sending a further shot high in the direction of the car park.
Little in the way of threat from the visitors apart from a drive from distance from Lee Goldberg that in keeping with most of the shots during a dull first half soared high over the bar. In addition, there was little flow to the first half that was punctuated by a number of fouls and stoppages and not assisted by an over fussy referee in terms of stopping play but who despite some of the fouls being of a type where a yellow card should at least have been at the very least been considered, the constant decision was to have a stern word with the culprits. At half time, there was little sign of the deadlock being broken and the dreaded outcome of penalties seemed more than a distinct possibility.
The second half in many ways was much like the first period in terms of stoppages, amounts of possession, which largely favoured the hosts, but there was one crucial difference in that the hosts were able to find the net. They took the lead within minutes of the restart with Cameron Hyde progressing down the right and having the time and space to direct a low cross into the middle where the waiting and unmarked Yemi Adelani was able to side foot into the gaping net in front of him with Potter having little in the way of defensive protection in front of him. The lead was swiftly doubled with the visiting defence once again providing little in the way of cover allowing Taylor Rhiney the time to direct a pass to Adelani whose deft chip over Potter rebounded off of the underside of the bar but was adjudged to have crossed the line before Jamie Cohen cleared upfield thinking momentarily that he had completed a spectacular clearance but ultimately Cohen did not protest the officials decision.
The response from the visitors was surprisingly subdued, with a couple of long range shots to no effect. Their best opportunity arose when Daniel Creese outpaced the home defence but there were hints of the ball travelling over a divot and this was the possible explanation as to why Creese's shot ended up heading towards the clubhouse rather than between the posts as should have been the case. For the final twenty minutes, the hosts were easily able to manage proceedings, though made few attempts to increase their lead. Rhiney should have added a third to the hosts tally in the last minute of normal time but angled a clear chance wide of the left hand post, but five minutes into the obligatory elongated period of stoppage time, Rhiney was in a similar position and noticed that Adelani was in a better position, hence sensible pass and precise finish from the latter to complete his hat trick with what was the final kick of the game. More than deserved win for the hosts, however there was the overall impression that further Vase progress against a team far better than the intensely disappointing visitors seen on this occasion would be far more difficult. Though it should be taken into account taking into account John Treleven's stats that South Midlands League have had a very weekend of Vase results, which if carried over into a surprise win for Baldock over Newport Pagnell this PM would indicate a strength in this seasons SML which comes unexpectedly.
Second visit to Second Meadow, though little apart from the small stand on the far side was recalled from the previous visit in August 1998. Pretty certain that there was only minimal enclosure at the time, however the ground is now fully enclosed by high metal fences and there is a sizeable formulaic but functional stand. There is a degree of financial input from Guillem Balague who I understand is a renowned Spanish football journalist/pundit and his presence over the course of the afternoon was evident. Was initially unsure as to the length of time that it would take to walk out from the town centre, though it took twenty minutes admittedly at a slower pace than what has been the case over the years.
Arrived into Biggleswade ten minutes later than expected (the only minor travel niggle of the day) and after locating the ground, in turn located the previously visited Golden Pheasant for an IPA from Kelchner Brewery was the first of several unremarkable ales consumed over the day. Continued with pre and post match trips to a very busy Crown Hotel (JDW) where a table was on both visits difficult to locate. The Citra from Oakham Brewery and the Coyote from Wolf Brewery have been sampled many times before and were satisfactory rather than anything better as was the case with the Halloumi Burger, though this was the first occasion that this new item on the revised menu had been consumed.
With the JDW environs becoming ever busier, an earlier than expected return was made with the ordinary nature of the day being contributed to by train services running to time and without issue (a trait that unlikely it would seem it would be valued if it was to be continued. Indoors at 21.10.

FA Vase Second Round
Baldock Town v Newport Pagnell Town

A groundhopper from another Forum was in attendance at Hitchin Road, the one who painstakingly lists the line ups and their previous Club's:

FA Vase 2nd Round
Baldock Town 1-4 Newport Pagnell Town

Admission - £7, Attendance - 223, Venue - New Lamb Meadow
The home of Arlesey Town and also the current home of ground sharers and todays hosts Baldock Town. Arlesey is a town in Bedfordshire, on the border of Hertfordshire. The ground has quite a bit of parking but there was overflow onto the residential streets today. A really decent ground for the level and one of my favourites of recent times. Along one touchline runs the Clubhouse with a seated covered stand hanging off it, offset to the half way line. The opposite touchline has a large covered stand behind the dugouts with seating and standing. Behind one goal is a small enclosed open terraced area. A good place to watch football.
Game - Newport took an early lead when Albie Hall let a long range low shot go which squirmed under David Archer, 0-1. Newport nearly made it 2 with a direct free kick easily saved. Baldock nearly had an equaliser when there was a defensive mix up. Keeper Martin Conway got back into position quickly and saved a one on one well before partying to avoid a tap in. Baldock did equalise when Conways pro-active positioning caught him out when a ball over the top was well controlled on the chest by Owen Robertson to take it around Conway and struck home, 1-1. The current vase holders took the lead for a second time when a long free kick led to a header which was well saved by Archer but unfortunately for him it landed on Albie Hall to head into the roof of the net for his second of the game, 1-2. Baldock had a golden chance straight from kick off when the ball was struck across the goal line but nobody was there to touch it in. Conways dodgy distribution led to a Baldock player trying an audacious chip which Conway had to back track for and tip over the bar colliding with the upright in the process. Half time 1-2. Shortly after kick off an awkward long ball was left to Archer to try and head, the central defenders were nowhere to be seen, however he was challenged by a much larger Newport striker but still won the ball, the loose ball was struck into the net through the 2 teleporting centre backs who decided to try and cover the goal line than challenge for the initial ball, 1-3. Baldock had some heavy pressure but were denied by some great Conway saves. A fourth was scored against the grain for Newport through a speculative effort by Mo Ahmed, 1-4. The fourth pretty much killed the game off to see the current Champions through to the Third Round.
