Sir Rebel 1965’s 8 Game Review

Guest Wycombe Rebel

Just for WR:

After the largest number of pre-season games to ensure the team hit the ground running, the season did not get off to good start. Only 4 points from 12 in the opening 4 games again (4 points from 4 last season)

However, the recent 4 games have shown improved results with 9 points from 12, however the 5-1 “most even game” result at Bath showed that it is still a work in progress.

So, after 8 games the stats are:

Position: 9th

Points: 13

Points per game: 1.625 per game

Goals scored: 11

Goals conceded: 14

Goal difference -3

Points from top: 11

Points from bottom: 11

So, if there had been a better start in the first 4 games where could we have been?

Teams like Ebbsfleet and H&W look like they will take some catching, however there are some down the bottom who are a surprise.

New boys Farnborough are coping, but when it goes wrong it is never the managers fault – love the videos Spencer!

Attendances are at an average of 556 compared to last seasons of 622, however the holiday season may have had an impact and also “credit crunch”, but we are yet to see the cold winter evening games effect.

The loss of contracted player Edon Pruti to Brentford for no compensation is a massive blow both on the pitch and financially. Lloyd Owusu, was also in his early 20’s joined Brentford in 1998 when they were in the third division for £25,000. The question has to be asked why have players on contracts if they are not held to them or suitable compensation gained? Agree that players should not be held back from bettering themselves, but there has to be a balance or smaller clubs will be abused.

The late appearance of the “new” home shirt is now explained by the loss of the shirt sponsor – having a three-month-old cryptocurrency firm becoming sponsors never looked like a long-term solution.

So an acceptable start to the season being mid table, with a promising upturn in form taking us in the right direction along with players coming back from injuries bodes well for more progress.

But concerns starting to show with a drop in attendance, loss of a key sponsor and no income from the transfer of a player to a Premiership team mean that there is a lot of pressure to have a good run in the big cup games. This along with SBC and their need to sell off assets will mean that following the Rebels will never be boring.

The difference with Lloyd Owusu was that he was instantly a first team player for Brentford. I appreciate that Brentford are now three divisions higher.

Lloyd Owusu was an established Conference goalscorer and signed by Brentford from Slough Town in 1998. He was an instant success one divison higher, scoring 25 goals in all competitions as Brentford won the Third Division title and he finished top of the Third Division scoring chart. He was less successful in the 1999/2000 season, scoring 14 goals in all competitions. During the 2000/1 season he scored 12 goals in 34 games. He returned to form with a bang in 2001/2 scoring 22 goals.

“Points from top: 11”

Are we expected to compete with Havant and Ebbsfleet?

“So, if there had been a better start in the first 4 games where could we have been?”

Exactly where we should be, pushing for the play off positions and level on points with 7th.

“So an acceptable start to the season being mid table, with a promising upturn in form taking us in the right direction along with players coming back from injuries bodes well for more progress.”

Is 9th and level on points with 7th mid table?

"Are we expected to compete with Havant and Ebbsfleet?" - well they are in the same league as us so we have to compete with them.

"Exactly where we should be, pushing for the play off positions and level on points with 7th." - we are not 7th as GD is worse, so we are 9th fact! if we had won more / scored more we would be higher.

"Is 9th and level on points with 7th mid table?" - as above we are not 7th we are 9th fact! 9th in a league of 24 means we are in the middle third (24 divided by 3 is 8 - so bottom third 24 to 17, middle third 16-9, top third 8-1) - so yes mid table.

You wanted the review WR, now you want to pick an argument about facts - get real.

Christ someone is touchy!

Are we not allowed to ask questions about your review especially when we may have a different view?

I wouldn’t necessarily say what you have said are “facts”, are you Rafa Benitez???

Ebbsfleet and H&W are in the same league we play in FACT

We are in 9th place based on points and GD FACT

9th place is in the middle third of the table FACT

Do you have a problem with simple comprehension of facts?

Looks like you are the one with the problem.

No problem here.

Yes we have to play them because they are in our league but we can’t compete with them given their financial clout.

We are in joint 7th based upon our total points, goal difference only really comes into play after 46 games.

When was the league split into 3 divisions of 8???

You see Sir Rebel, “facts” or “FACT” as you put it can be interpreted another way especially when you have a positive outlook on things!
