Dover A 10th Sept Match Thread

In the great scheme of things has that got anything to do with not providing after match food for the players?

And what about not letting clubs broadcast matches live?

I would suggest this has nothing to do with being fined by the league.

No, I agree with you there on those two points, RR.

But as for the gate and season ticket prices ... the fine and the travelling expenses have to be recovered somehow. Home league attendances this season are in the range of 521-773 but the side has only recently started winning. It's a tricky equation for Jim Parmenter. He was a member of the National League board but resigned on 7th February 2021 and in his letter of resignation stated :-

“I can no longer support the direction of travel that the board is taking and I’m afraid I can no longer be seen to be party to actions which I absolutely disagree with.

I accept that the board is a collective and whilst as a member it is a prerequisite that, in public, the board and its chairman are supported. I have therefore chosen to resign, in order to say what I really believe publicly.

The lack of grant funding should have been properly addressed in late December or at least very early January. As it stands it is likely to be two months with no funds for clubs before any sort of resolution is forthcoming.

I am in particular disagreement that the executive appear to be encouraging clubs to take large loans to complete the season, as I have said twice at board meetings I believe that the competition rules are being broken by allowing the proposed loans, let alone encouraging them. (Page 155 Appendices 08 of the rule book).

The league has for 10 years insisted that clubs manage their financial affairs prudently and has had great success and received much praise for the results, now that is all to be thrown to the dogs and for what?

I understand why the bigger, richer clubs with chances of promotion are pushing hard to continue, but in a sense they are asking smaller clubs with no crowds or income who are playing for no reason to take large loans and probably overstretch themselves with dire consequences, to subsidise the larger clubs ambitions. I do not agree with that position.

The board has very little credibility as an organisation within our clubs and I believe the decision to send letters to clubs who find it difficult to play, threatening sanctions was ill conceived and will do nothing to unite the competition in what continues to be a very divisive time.

Even if the vote is to continue, I do not believe that the league will be able to continue in any credible form or with integrity for another five months.

There are some very good people on the board and I do not seek to criticise individuals, but as a body I do not believe we have shown strong, relevant leadership. Our governance has descended into chaos and some decisions made by the board seem to change when interpreted by the executive."

Ok we are not getting the rub of the green at the moment with good shouts for penalties not being given and individual mistakes that have proven costly.

For large parts in the majority of our games we have been the better side but our failure to capitalize on our superiority through lack of creativity in the final 3rd and lack of shots on target has been to our detriment.

3-0 sounds a drubbing but going by reports we were in large parts the better side but again did we create anything worthwhile or at least test their keeper?

It's no good being the better team in the first 2/3rds of the pitch if no goals or at the very least a shot on target doesn't comes from it.

There's no doubt losing both our main strikers to injury has been a major blow but I don't think it should be used as an excuse for the above.

A couple of points to note on the match highlights:

Looking at the 'penalty' given on Rhys, it really looks like Rhys got to the ball first to touch it away and wasn't a penalty. The ref imo only has to look at the direction of the ball to see that Rhys got their first with the subsequent collision with the player inevitable and part of football which is supposed to be a contact sport.

The other two goals were just clumsy mistakes from Toggs and Fabio.

It also looks like we again played Wellsy at center back, Jackman at left back and Scott Davies at right back.

My personal opinion is that although he can, if necessary, cover at right back, Scott Davies is not a right back and is imo wasted in that position.

I'm going to hazard a few guesses around the "commentary" of this game since its finish -

- cost of getting into the ground (£30 for Dad and I is a rip off). Add to that the time to get there means lunch at the ground at im sure a cost of £10+ for a couple of burgers and drinks as well.

- late re-arrangement (can't help the Queen passing away and clearly much better to play it on a Saturday, but as soon as Farnborough game was off, people probably used it as a free Saturday).

- cost of living in general (weather has changed and costs are going up so fans will pick and choose games to attend)

- poor result after fine margins (to coin a Spencer phrase as used by Jon in his interview)

All of the above might mean there wasn't a massive following from Slough, couple that up with the reduced number of people on the forum that might have attended and that might be why?

For those interested we went to Burnham v Holyport. A very entertaining 3-2 result for Burnham.

Nothing in your post I can disagree with Youve pretty well covered the reasons why less people are attending games but Im sure Richie Baker is querying why none of the fans who DID attend the game and who Jon thanked for their support has written a report I cant remember when that last happened Can you (or anyone else) think why thats happened so far?

Maybe no-one on the forum went? Maybe those on the forum that did go are having Leeds v Arsenal VAR problems🤣. Maybe they are so disappointed with the result that they don't want to post🙈. Perhaps they think, if you didn't go, tough luck you missed out🤷‍♂️.

Im currently in South Somerset so Ill be at Taunton and Weymouth and Chippenham and a few others  but Dover is a nono for me  Youve explained why you didnt  go   People who dontgo/cantgo to away games rely on reports from those who do to get a good impression of performance

You're spot on Irish.Even if people did not attend the game they still comment on here.It all seems very strange

Not really, this forum is posted on by very few fans anymore. There are at present probably about ten regular posters….. give it another season and it will probably be just two or three.

We'll be at Taunton and Weymouth as well (making a weekend of it). Fingers crossed the April weather will be good and the week after Weymouth is better than the last time we played there (March 2020 anyone!!!!!!!)

Posted on by very few fans but loads more look at the forum and read other supporters postings but can't be bothered to have an opinion or comment which I find odd.

Why bother to look and read other supporters comments but not make a comment yourself?

I didn't attend the game but still thought I'd make the effort to comment after gathering some information on the game from various sources.

A football forum is a means of communicating and voicing your opinion on topics to do with Slough and other clubs with other like minded supporters.
