Unfortunately clubs like Slough are held to ransome by clubs like Brentford.

No decent minded club would stop the progress of a player wanting to play at a higher level and clubs know that.

Well maybe if clubs had a backbone they would ensure they were not ripped off.

He WAS on a contract so make them pay, otherwise why have him on a contract?

Edon looked like a good player even from the very first few appearances he made for us, and I wish him all the very best at Brentford.

I can understand him wanting to jump at the opportunity & our Managers not wanting to stand in his way, but in all honesty I don’t see him as having Premier League potential (does anyone else?), and it looks like the terms (one year with a one year extension option & no upfront fee) would appear to reflect this. I just hope he is getting paid at least a four figure weekly wage.

In light of what has happened here with Brentford will the Club be reviewing the contracts that under 23 players sign, with possibly a minimum fee release clause, or just a fixed sell on percentage if they move to a club at least two levels higher on a minimum contract of two years.

The main issue with this Brentford deal is that it looks like Brentford could release him in a year & he could end up signing for another EFL club & we would receive nothing (is that right, have I read the details correctly?).

This is extremely harsh imo.....

Are you saying you expected the club to stand in Edon's way....lets face it, hes the only one who would lose out

I wish Edon all the best and I hope he realises his dream but at NLS level he had a lot to learn still in my opinion, for all his promise he needs a lot of coaching on his timing and reading of the game in front of him… I’m sure the elite level coaches at Brentford can help him with that!

As for no fee upfront, it is what it is, the club did the right thing not standing in his way, you have to let the lad go and have his chance, money isn’t everything

Let's hope the clubs bank manager sees it that way.

What would you have done then???

Blocked a young man’s dream???

Explored the possibility of a season long loan to Brentford with them then having an option to purchase.

So if Brentford decided they didn’t want to extend/purchase he would still have come back to Slough next season & would still have been covered as an under 23.

Brentfords B team model is one of youth and typically picking up U18s released from UK or overseas from higher profile academies that said they have also picked up players via their scouting network from outside this arena (Wraynel Hercules, ex Barnet would be an example of this, now without a club but a decent player but not premiership standard) also signed on a 1 plus option of 1 year which is also the norm unless your a worldie of a player.

I wish Eden all the best and being back in the game full time with more coaching hours can only improve him further.  IMHO he has 12 - 18 months to prove himself as premiership potential.

Difficult one for Neil and Jon but I admire them not blocking a young player with the opportunity in front of him, I am sure they would have spun this that should Eden become successful Slough Town would be commercially rewarded in the future.

How do you know the club didn’t explore that Avenue??? Have you first hand knowledge of all the discussions?

‘Romeo Beckham, son of former England captain David, is set to make his debut in English football when Brentford's B team take on Crewe in a behind-closed-doors friendly on Saturday.’ The Mirror

Romeo Beckham is not exactly a chip of the old block.

Taken from his Wiki page:

Started at the Arsenal Academy and was released after 1 year.

Gave up football for 5 years to take up tennis.

Returned to football to play for Fort Lauderdale in the USA.

Playing positions: Full back, winger, forward.

I can't say I was ever a fan of David Beckham either. Overhyped as a player in my book. Admittedly,he played well for England but apart from his free kick prowess, was he really as good as his cv says he is?

As for Romeo Beckham,it's unfair to compare him to his father. It's bad enough that he's got to go around his life with the name Romeo ! ha ha ha !

Unfortunately whether it's fair or not it comes with the territory of being the Son of a famous person.

I'm sure the clubs he signs for won't mind the publicity.

Overhyped? 19 winners medals would say differently and he was as good as his CV suggests, you don’t spend 11 seasons at Man Utd (under SAF), 4 seasons at Real Madrid and then time at PSG and AC Milan if you are not very good I’m afraid. One of the best players England has ever produced.

Steven Gerrard, now that’s an overhyped player and now Manager!

Steven Gerrard overhyped, you've got to be on a wind up?! The best English midfielder in decades that could literally do it all.

"During the 2020-1 season, Gerrard led Glasgow Rangers through a record-breaking season, claiming back-to-back derby wins over rivals Celtic, and topping their Europa League group.

On 7th March 2021, Rangers won the Scottish Premiership title without losing a single league match, achieving their first league title in 10 years and their 55th top-flight title overall."

Don't forget that truly outstanding achievement despite his so far not showing signs of repeating it at Aston Villa.

The narrow minded view of a Liverpool fan?!?!

Scholes and Lampard were far better players than that choker.
