Oh I see.

When you said that £700 was a lot of money for a club the size of Slough I naturally I assumed you thought we were paying that.

I assumed the same, Jon, as what relevance is Ryan's Bird's past wages earned, if Slough isn't paying that amount out?

Where I agree with SR1965, is that Ryan Bird has been a flop as a forward for Slough Town FC. He could have been so much more, when he came to the club. He was a really talented striker when he was with Burnham, and after his professional stints I thought he would have gained rather than lost his mojo but least we have got something from him as a defender and in fact,at times he's been good in defence and a handy player to have. I definitely think he deserved to be with Slough pre-season[after his bad injury] and possibly, to be around the periphery for the coming months and more if he can show his worth but with such a tight budget[supposedly?] I would have thought players on the edge of the squad are in danger of being sacrificed for their money/wages to bring in another striker. Well, that's how I think but our managers may have other ideas.

Ryan Bird has said that he never really considered himself as a striker and I think his goal scoring record to an extent backs this up.

He scored goals at Burnham which averaged out at roughly 11 goals a season over 10 seasons.

After Burnham he made the big jump up to Portsmouth scoring 3 goals in 20 games and various other clubs peaking at 8 goals in 36 for Yeovil with the exception being Dover where he scored 20 in 48, ending up at Maidenhead where he scored 1 goal in 26 appearances.

Hopefully Ryan will prove the doubters wrong but these day's Ryan Bird is very much a defender who can score the odd goal when pushed up front at set pieces etc.

On those statistics my wording of 'talented striker' is wrong but a player like Ryan Bird playing upfront with another goal getter forward can be hugely beneficial to a team. I think you also need to look at how many openings for other players was brought on by having a player like that on the pitch.

When I watched Burnham with Ryan Bird in the team I thought their front line was a handful and caused endless problems for the opposition playing them.

To me the difference now to back then, is Ryan's heart is not in playing upfront, and as he has no desire to be a forward it's a lost cause and waste of time playing him there. Slough bought him in as a striker but like a lot of Maidenhead fans warned beforehand, he just isn't the same player as he was when at Burnham. Pity but these things happen. I must say he is a tad fortunate to still be in the mix with Slough Town FC, given the expectations on him when he first joined our club.

He has scored 6 goals in his 44 appearances for Slough Town.
