League performance measures

Recommended Posts

As there are 24 teams this season, it means there are 46 games – yeah, I know I am a mathematical genius!

So, I was thinking where the performance measures should be?

As in the last few seasons there has been poor starts to the season, I think there should be a measure at 8 games to compare this season to previous to see if we can hit the ground running, otherwise it leaves you in a “catch up” situation and make it very hard to have a successful season and push for the top places, or even worse trying not to get in a relegation battle.

The other natural time to assess performance is usually after the Christmas/new year games, but with the fixtures as they stand at the moment that would be 26 games in (up to and including 1st Jan game). This is also assuming these are all played, but I would like to think we will be having some cup runs this season which will replace some of the league games.  So, if for arguments sake 4 games are replaced with cup games it would bring us down to 22 games, also the winter holiday games can spring all sorts of surprises and it is worth waiting before taking the measure.

That gets us half way through the season roughly, still time to make changes if required, either to realign the team if we are struggling, or to invest if it looks like a top spot may be possible.

Based on how drastic these changes are, further points for measuring would need to be established to see if the desired outcome has been achieved.

For the run up to the end of season the measures would really depend on our fortunes and it then almost turns into a game-by-game analysis.

The two main problems which will dictate our ability to make any changes and the impact they will have, will be what funds we have available (and those of other teams), and the performances of the other 23 in the league.  There will be other variables such as injuries and suspensions, but that is why you have a squad of players.

I think this league will be similar to last seasons, where any team can beat any other and will probably be fairly tight for both the top spots and relegation places, where a run of wins or loses can move you to one end or the other of the table fairly quickly.

I am sure this season will come up with the usually roller-costa of results that are associated with following STFC, and it is this uncertainty which makes sure we never have a boring season.

So roll on the 6th August. COYR
