Just heard Dennis Greene on the phoneline and he made a very good point with regards to windsor joining with Slough town. If that was to happen just think of the attendances we'd get week in week out. Yes okay at first we may not like it but as Grenne said in 10 years we'd think it was the norm! After all there is already a windsor, slough and eton atheltics club why not a footy club?

I posted this on the windsor message board if you'd like to reply to it please do so on the windsor board as i'd like to here your thoughts on this!

You could merge under us and be called Slough Town!!

The problem with mergers is that neither set of supporters will want to lose the history of their club or play under the name of another club - see my opening sentence. Whilst in theory if Burnham, Marlow, Windsor, Slough & Maidenhead were all to merge and keep their existing fan bases, then yes, there would be a superb base there from which to build on, but it's not going to happen.

If anything with the launch of the Slough Town Supporters Trust (this Friday!!) we're looking at preserving our identity as STFC.

And exactly the point of why it shouldn't be done. Windsor Slough & Eton, Slough Windsor & Eton are both awful names and neither set of fans would want to play under the other sides name.

The only way it will come about is if one of the clubs go under I think. At present, that looks more likely to be us though!

And the other thing of course is this comes very closely on the back of WEFC chairman Peter Simpson appealing for extra support at Windsor matches. He's obviously hoping for our level of support, or at least it would appear our support to defect over to this potential Slough Windsor & Eton FC.

Intruiging.

I don't want another town name in the club name, it wouldn't be easy to say, and the initinals would be SWEFC or WESFC.

I dunno...WES FC could be a good chant! lol

It's all about identity. I'm a Slough Town fan, always have been, always will be, not Windsor. Merging would destroy both clubs' hostories and traditions. It seems a long time ago now but when we were in the Conference getting gates of 700-1500, who would ever have brought up the discussion about merging with Windsor & Eton? OK things have changed now but I don't see why we should be looking to merge. It's not as if we need the extra fanbase at this level (although it would be great to be getting 600+ every week off our own backs).

Regarding the point about supporting a merged club... no it would probably make me feel a little ill to be honest. Much as it pains me to say it, if I can't support Slough Town then I think I'd prefer to drop all the way to the bottom and support an AFC Slough Town with the 150-200 other hardcore fans we have.

Went to my first Slough game 15 years ago at the age of 8. I would not support a merged team and would follow the STST to reform in the Combined Counties or wherever. I have too much history with the club to support a merged team. The club has too much history to be just swallowed up.

It is a problem with teams in the Thames Valley though. In the late 80s there was talk of merger between Swindon, Oxford and Reading to form one dominant league club in the region. Think of the potential fanbase? But think of what would be lost. It will never work.

On the flip side though, if Windsor want to sell their ground, donate us their better players (Hakki & Carroll in midfield anyone?) and finance our move back to Slough to continue playing as Slough Town FC, then they are welcome to merge with us! <img src="/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Of course, the main argument would be, where would we play? Slough or Windsor? An argument between 300-400 regular Slough fans and 125-175 regular Windsor fans? It might work, but I wouldn't want it to. Of course I'm biased, but any merged team would have to play in Slough for me.
