Germany v England last night !

Did anyone see the match last night?

I don't watch many England football matches, unless it's something like a World Cup or European Cup competition but last night seeing that England were playing Germany I thought I'd watch. For an relatively friendly international match, it was quite good and played with vigour and tempo. Both sides had good chances to win.

What do Slough fans think of Gareth Southgate as England manager?

I like him and think he has done a good job with England and has steadily built a very good squad and has brought stability and a great togetherness within the England camp.

What I get frustrated with him about is that he is so slow with his substitutions, and is over loyal to players. Take last night it's was obvious to me at least, that Raheem Sterling,Mason Mount and Bukayo Saka were not getting a lot of joy in the second half, why did it take so long for Gareth Southgate to bring Jack Grealish and Jarrod Bowen on ? I thought he could and should have made those substitutions at least 10 minutes sooner. I would have taken Saka off for Bowen first and then changed Sterling for Grealish. Mason Mount I would have left on a little longer and if no improvement changed him for Connor Gallagher for the latter part of the game.  Gallagher would be slightly out of position but he does score goals and is a good link up player.

Raheem Sterling and Buyako Saka deserve to be regulars in the England squad but when they run out of steam they should be switched for others on the bench sooner imo. What do others think? Be interested to see what Bakes and Unders thought of it,if they watched it, and have the time to respond.

Personally I thought England were not very good for most of the match.

Too many players were average to poor with Saka, Mount, Sterling and Trippier the main culprits.

I was calling for them to be subbed if not at half time certainly with at least 30 minutes to go to give the subs a fair chance to do something positive.

IMO a poor call from Southgate to not sub these players earlier magnified by Grealish coming on and changing the game completely.

I thought England played ok and had a good few chances to score but I would say Germany had the edge over England in the main but there was not a real lot in it. As far as England football matches go it was one of the better friendlies I've seen but as I don't avidly watch England football team a lot that's not saying much.

I would have marked Pickford as a 6 [average], Walker 7[good] Stones 6, Maguire 5[below average]Trippier 6, Phillips 6 Rice 7 Saka 6 Mount 6 Sterling 6 Kane 7

Subs Grealish 8 [very good] Bowen 7  Bellingham 7.

Gareth Southgate… The most successful England Manager since Sir Alf Ramsey… Led England to their first World Cup Semi Final in 28 years, thats 7 tournaments, and England’s first major final since 1966… To me, the man can do no wrong!

I don’t watch any qualifier, friendly, nations league etc games anymore, it’s all about tournament performance for me and he has exceeded expectations in a job where he can never win no matter what he does with the fans.

Grealish will get his starting run when Southgate can trust him not to be tactically naive, the exact same reason he was on the bench a lot at City, Pep doesn’t trust him yet.

Just enjoy the ride because I have every confidence we’ll be in the World Cup Final in December!

Fair enough CR, on Gareth Southgate. I like him as a bloke, and his record for England speaks for itself but as a manager I find him ok but not overly adventurous.

Jack Grealish would be a regular starter in my England X1, in fact he would be one of the main men in it. He wouldn't be undroppable but he would start games, a lot more than he does now.

Manchester City have an abundance of talent but Pep still bought Grealish, as he can spot talent a mile off.

The same could be said for every manager in top flight football these days, all are risk averse.

Pep may have bought Grealish but he doesn’t trust him yet, that is clear.
