He could be a late developer ?.

Of course there could be other reasons why it didn't work out for him but as SF has actually seen him play a few times, I'll be more than happy to trust his judgement.

So you've wrote off Christian Ronaldo for the Premier League, who is 37 and Lionel Messi who is 34 ! ha ha !

Graham Roberts played 10 games for Slough when he was 39. Paul McKinnon joined Slough when he was 33, and played two good seasons for us up front under two different managers [ Alan Davies and Dave Kemp]. Steve Perkins was 35 when he joined Slough under Steve Bateman.

I'm sure there's plenty of other examples. All I'm saying is, it is daft to write a player off because of his age [young or old].

Comparing James Ewington or any other part time footballer to Ronaldo or Messi is daft.

Ronaldo and Messi or even our own Manny Williams are fitness freaks along with other players who look after themselves but on the other hand there are players who age quickly either because they don't look after themselves or they are just not genetically made that way.

I haven't seen any other non league clubs[besides Slough Town] for over two years,so my judgement on players currently is limited, so I welcome your input SloughFlyer, as you are watching a lot of clubs at different levels regular. Next season I hope to get to see more games at various levels, I've just not been able to for awhile.

On James Ewington and Nathan Minhas, I looked through Step 3 divisions goal scorer lists and saw these two had scored 24 goals at Step 3 at smaller clubs at that level. I take on board that Nathan Minhas sounds the better player given his age, dynamics, speed etc and the close links Slough as a club have to Beaconsfield, that he may already be on Bakes and Unders shopping list.

As for James Ewington I can accept your opinion on him but like your opinion on Jonathon North, I don't agree with it. Though, I accept what you said about the games you watched James Ewington in, against Hayes v Harrow and Beaconsfield v Harrow. The thing is he may have been carrying an injury in those games or wasn't getting a lot of service. There could be unforseen reasons for those off days. Take Elliot Buchanan for example, I watched the live stream of the play off match between Hayes and Farnborough[it is never as good as actually being at the match for real] but in that match I didn't think Elliot had one of his better games, although he did get an assist for their winning goal. If I went by this game I would have concluded he isn't up to much but I know that isn't the case with him. He isn't getting any younger either but I don't write players off because of their age. To me Slough are crying out for forwards who score goals, James Ewington does. He might not get 24 goals in our league but if he weighed in with 10 it would help. I think we get fixated on strikers chasing down everything and running around after everything, Nathan Minhas may be ideal for that and fit in well for a Bakes and Unders side but to me if Slough signed James Ewington as well, I would say to him to use his loaf with offside traps and to solely concentrate in being in the box and putting the ball in the net how ever he can, shoot instinctively and only pass if there is nothing else on for yourself. I wouldn't get him doing loads of running. The odd close down but nothing overexerting. We have plenty of others who can do that.

Of the games I've seen this season with Slough we have plenty of possession and chances to score but we are not clinical enough,as we ask our young strikers to track back, close down players and battle for everything, which to me isn't wrong on the whole given this division and our resources and the tactics we employ but for all our industry getting up the field of play we haven't a player who is experienced in scoring goals on a regular basis and is waiting to do just that. Where is our wily fox in the box? We haven't one and haven't for a good while. Ben Harris pops up with goals now and again but his goals are drying up and with him he seems more intent on winding up the opposition. Alfonso Tenconi would have got better and it is a shame he won't be with us next year. Imran Kayani is an up and comer but isn't ready to be it yet,so where does that leaves us up front?

As has been said we have no money to buy 'star names', so if this is the case we should take chances on strikers who have been around the non league game for awhile. and if it doesn't work out with them [say a 3 month trial under scrutiny of our managers] we just release them [ especially if we no longer offer contracts]. An older striker wanting to prove something to himself [if going up a league] may see it as a challenge but one worth taking, while he still can. We get in older centre backs and midfielders,so what is the difference?

3spirit, you seem fixated on Nathan Minhas and James Ewington when they have hardly ever player or scored at NLS level.

There is a player just down the road who has played and scored at levels above us and this season has scored 41 goals in the Southern Premier and is a spring chicken at only 32.

"I didn't think Elliot had one of his better games, although he did get an assist for their winning goal."

I know you consider that we don't always watch the same match 3spirit but Elliot Buchanan got an assist for his shot in the move before the one from which Sam Deering scored the winning goal.

"Going into the final ten minutes it started to look as if United’s ten men may force extra time, Constable held a dipping Paul Hodges volley and seconds later Deering sent Buchanan through again, this time the United stopper was down quickly to block the ball away with McDevitt playing it clear of danger.

With just three minutes left Deering got the decisive strike, having collected a slide-rule pass through the United defence the ‘Boro skipper moved into the box and fired low across Constable into the far corner."

Also, the last Slough Town home match that I missed was Eastbourne Borough in the FA Trophy on 18th December due to my being on a whisky distillery tour. I have seen a very wide range of performances from the Rebels in those matches.

I'm not fixated about either. I just took those two as examples of strikers playing one division down at Step 3, who may be relatively cheap, and they play for smaller budget teams nearby [guessing that, though, and going by their attendances].

I don't know what player you are on about, why don't you tell me his name?  If he has scored 41 goals in the Southern Premier,is he playing at a top side? I looked on the Southern Premier website at all their 4 divisions[premier central/premier south/division 1 south/division 1 central] and couldn't find who you mean.

It’s Moses at H&Y and I would guess he earns more than our top earner so that’s a no go.

Shredding Green, I did explain that I was watching the snoooker and then a natural world programme and was looking at what was going on in the Hampton v Slough game on Twitter while also watching the live stream,so I'm bound to have missed some parts of the game hence why I missed Francis Amartey's sending off offence. The reason I said Elliot Buchanan got an assist for the winning goal was that was what was said on the live stream late in the game.

Thanks for that GlenSTFC. Why Reading Rebel couldn't have just said that, I don't know?  He wouldn't come cheap especially if Hayes are going for promotion again next season. To be honest I know nothing about him other than him being on the live stream game the other day and the commentators saying he's the top scorer at Hayes. His name rings a bell but I can't remember from where from.

I was mentioning players that we may have a chance of getting. If Moses Emmanual has scored 40 plus goals he's going to be hot property and in big demand,so as you say Glen, a no-go for Slough.

I did mention his name on the non league snippets thread as having scored 40 goals for H&Y.

I didn't mention his name this time simply because I know you are well informed on local footballers so I thought you would know who I was talking about straight away.

Perhaps he rings a bell from playing for Wealdstone before joining H&Y.

Just a quick question for any forumites, what was the name of the small striker Slough got from Farnborough, about 3 seasons ago. I think his first name might be Perry? Been racking my brain and it is bugging me, as I can't remember!

Do you mean couldn’t get regular football for us? He was pretty much playing in every game in our run in to promotion, and someone we liked as he knew how to put the ball in the back of the net.

However when we stepped up a level his overall commitment was not good enough, often turning up late, and despite a number of warnings did not heed our advice, and ended up being one of the reasons he was released.

Liked Perry personally and looking back think he may have had a few personal issues that has blighted his career since.

Thanks for that clarification Neil There's  usually other reasons when good players leave your squads  Yes your right about other issues  a read of his twitter page reveals a lot He must have retained some affection for the Rebels as his picture on his twitterpage is still a squad picture of the Rebels!

At the time, there was me banging on about getting a 6ft plus striker in, on the forum, and up turns Perry Coles ! ha ha! Talk about take the piss !?  You were right, though, Neil, Perry Coles was phenomenal that first season and did the bizz.
