Monday 2nd May : Hampton & Richmond Borough v Slough Town

Recommended Posts

An easy way of travelling to The Beveree Stadium is to take the 81 bus from Slough and alight at any stop from Harlington Corner to The Parkway and change to a 111 which stops right outside The Beveree Stadium. The name of the bus stop is actually "Hampton & Richmond Borough FC"!

I won't be going to the match myself as I will be at The SKYex for Hayes & Yeading United v Farnborough in the Southern League Premier Division South play-offs final.

SG, I believe that is going to be all ticket, so get yours when they come out

I have a friend from Bicester arriving at 11.30 am on Saturday morning to go for lunch before the Slough Town v Dartford game.

Hayes & Yeading United have announced their awkward ticket sales arrangements :-

"We have a limited capacity of 1,600 for the Play-off final, and with the stadium designed only to split on a 50/50 basis, this leaves 800 tickets available to each team, which includes all media, officials and league/FA requirements.

GENERAL SALE : Remaining tickets will then go on general sale at 11 am on SATURDAY 30th APRIL. Ticket sales will finish at 4 pm and a further announcement will be made at that time on ticket availability. WE DO NOT ANTICIPATE ANY TICKETS TO BE AVAILABLE AFTER SATURDAY."

Must say I'm disappointed we couldn't make the top half of the table We are 11th with our program complete There are 3 other teams with an outstanding game within 1 point of us so 11th is the best we'll so. Let's hope the lads work some magic during the close season Only a good start to next season will bring increased gates and revenue  so badly needed if we are to improve.

A good first half ended 1-0 to the Rebels, probably should have been one or two more but our reluctance to have a shot when in a good position lead to some promising moves fizzling out.

Good start to the second half came to an abrupt halt with Ben Harris going off injured and Sean Fraser conceding a penalty.

After the penalty the wheels seemed to come off culminating with a resurgent Hampton ending up winning the game 3-1.

What was the Slough formation and who played where, RR or anybody?  Looking at the team sheet on Twitter I was puzzled how we lined up at the start of the match.

STRIKERS,STRIKERS,STRIKERS we must recruit STRIKERS !

I would say a fluid 4-1-4-1 using Gabe George as a wing back.

I agree with 4-1-4-1 to start with RR. Gabe George was more on left hand side of Midfield. To me, it was

North

Fraser - Dandy - Pruti - Grant

Togwell

Goueth - Cumberbatch - Kuhl - George

Harris.

Actually lined up 4231 with Eitel Kurtis and Gabe ahead of Togs and Kuhly, however as Kuhly gets around the pitch, can see why it can look like a 4141 also.

Like the fact that you gave Gabe George a run out on the left wing. Not brown nosing but that is astute management.

Having watched your post match interview after the Hampton match, Neil, I was gobsmacked when you said that you may not be able to get a striker/strikers in next season. I know you was downbeat/downcast after losing at Hampton but hopefully today[two days later] you are more optimistic for next season !

How can the club not recruit a forward or two?  Are you on a wind up, with your statement about this?

To me, there are strikers around that could do a job for Slough, which aren't going to cost the earth. Since I've been watching Slough [over 40 years] we've always managed to find someone each season capable enough up front, and not all of them have been anywhere near the best but they've pretty much all been able to bring something purposeful to our attack [some a lot better than others,of course] but we are not talking rocket science here.

To me it's disingenuous for you to say that it could be impossible next season, regardless of tight budgets/operating on a shoestring. It's your choice/decision, and nothing at all to do with there being no strikers suitable/available/affordable around.

Disingenuous is a strong word 3spirit. Neil is far more likely to know the club's finances and what strikers would cost than you or I. Remember we are only one full season post pandemic, our gates are down and we haven't had a cup run for quite a while. This year the senior players were not on contract. I think that the managers have done wonders with the resources at their disposal and I really hope they can continue to do so.

Sorry about the wording 'disingenuous' RebelBrewer but how else could I say it?

I know Neil is sincere and honest, and, of course, he knows better than me about the finances at our club and what strikers cost but I wasn't disagreeing with him about that. I was disagreeing with his statement that it could be impossible to acquire strikers.

To me he has lost the plot, if Slough decide not to bring in a striker or two ! Football is a game about scoring goals, not about defending at all costs.

Instead of having a team full of defenders and midfielders, we should next season favour our forward line, and not get bogged down with the affordability of players. If we want to save money, release one or two of our squad/first team players to fund a striker or two. We have players nearing their sell by date and players who are beginning to be injured more than are able to play. There's ways of finding money.

We know Sean Fraser is leaving.

We've also lost Warren Harris, Max Worsfold, Mark Nisbet and Guy Hollis through the season. Where have those wage savings gone?

All I want to see next season is Slough blending what they have, with a goal threat, and in this way putting away the chances the team is creating. What is wrong with that?

"Neil, I was gobsmacked when you said that you may not be able to get a striker/strikers in next season."

I suggest 3spirit that you listen to 3.20 to 4.35 of the post match interview again. Neil begins with "Clearly we need a striker" and ends with "We've got to try and unearth one or two".

Like everything else in life, nothing happens until it happens.

In many matches this season, our problem has been not being able to hold on to a lead and see out a game.

He didn't just say that, Shredding Green. Besides Neil can speak for himself.

Your logic in football, SG, is not the same as mine. You watch a different game to me but you are you, and I am me ! ha ha !

SG,are you now on the board of directors at Slough Town FC?  As you're taking a lot upon yourself to keep informing me 'how I need to watch a game' !

As for your comment about the problem being that 'the team is not able to hold on to a lead and see out a game' I see that notion as less of a problem. I see the problem as being that 'our team do not score enough goals with the chances they create' hence my call for the addition of a striker or two.

Bakes didn't say they won't be able to get a striker/strikers in for next season just not a top striker.

Just that they are 'fishing in a different market' and will have to try to 'unearth one or two gems'.

'Fishing in a different market'.  Who is Neil, comparing Slough with?

We are a Conference South team, aren't we? Have we got as much money as Enfield, Harrow Borough, Chesham, Beaconsfield, Hendon  etc etc?

I don't mind this 'unearth one or two gems' but why have Slough got to do this all of the time? Why can't Slough save a few bob on a few players they have,or have got rid of, and put that money into buying a proven striker?

I actually think with the addition of two good players up front, we could be a force to be reckoned with in this division, more than we are now. That would then bring money into the club. Speculate to accumulate is how I see it this pre-season. Not by breaking the bank but being shrewd with who we recruit up front next season.

Goalkeeper, defence and midfield I don't see a problem with,so why worry about those positions.
