Can we get Neal Stanley and Steve Thompson out of retirement :)

Why not Dave Kemp while we're at it?

If strike rate is the criterion give me Peter Lowen but my goodness it was a different game in those days.

Remarkable player who   claimed he never fouled opponents 52games 59 goals and made them look easy Double hat-trick in Cup game against Hungerford.

Our data base say's he scored 5 goals in 24 appearances.

When Bury became his first EFL club they signed him believing he was a Nigerian international who had played for top French and Belgian clubs  When his performances were quite underwhelming They did some checking and found his CV was fiction  Played for more than a dozen non league teams with limited success!

Certainly not the most physical of players but he had dear Bernie alongside him for us. I was fortunate to travel to Tilbury on the team coach the night we clinched promotion in 1965. The home fans asked us if he was the coach driver put in on the night to make up the numbers. Oh how we laughed. He was ,of course, already a proven goalscorer when we signed him.

I’m surprised that when these conversations about goalscorers of the past arise that Rowan Dodds name never seems to come up. We were in the Isthmian Premier (same level as National South now) in the mid 80’s and he scored over 100 goals for us, including hitting 30 goals in the 1982/3 season.

In my opinion, he is exactly the type of striker we could do with next season.

With 117 in 275 games he's 7th in the all time scoring list.

Of the modern day strikers it's amazing to see that Ed Smith is 10th on the list having scored 95 goals in only 149 appearances.

I only saw Rowan Dodds play towards the end of his time with Slough and didn't see him enough to appreciate how good he was. I got hooked watching Slough on a regular basis just after he left. I used to hear plenty of tales about how good Rowan was in a Slough shirt by a lot of Slough fans back then including my two older brothers but for me I didn't really get to see Rowan in his glory days. Pity we have no film footage of those days to see his talent.

Ed Smith was so much more than a striker.  That is a great strike rate, though, for a forward Slough picked up from a very average Fleet Town side at time. Ed was a clever footballer, and created a lot of opportunities for players around him. If he wasn't such a mad man and liability in temperament, he should have been playing at a higher level than Slough but of his time with Slough, we fans were treated to a lot of exciting goal mouth action with him in the team. Steve Bateman's team probably benefitted most from Ed but Bakes and Unders were wise to keep him in their first season at Slough, and before he went off the rails, he had played well under the ex Godalming managers.

I think 'mad' or even at times 'reckless' were appropriate words for Ed Smith.

I still cringe when I think of what might have been in the play-off semi final against Rugby Town.

The previous league game against Rugby we lost 2-1 with Ed Smith getting sent off for a challenge on their keeper.

In the opening minutes of the play-off semi final against Rugby Town, Ed Smith should of been sent off for another reckless challenge on the Rugby keeper.

The course of our history would have entirely changed if imo the ref had done the right thing and sent him off.

I totally agree with you RR.

How many times did we see Ed Smith play the goalkeeper instead of the ball during his time at Slough?

Well, he was a man with bouts of crazy behaviour and downright despicable play but the weird thing is it often came out of the blue, and sometimes it was like someone had flicked a light switch in his head to act this way. As for a lot of games when he didn't do these things, he could be the best player on the pitch and an huge asset to our team. If he hadn't been any good, Slough/his managers would have got shot, a lot earlier.

Ed Smith was a goal scorer and a constant nuisance to opposing defenders which is probably why i'd guess our managers and others put up with his crazy antics.
