Not often I get to see football on a Thursday night, but this was worth the short trip up from more cat-sitting duties in north London. Mid-table Harpenden got off to a strong start, scoring an early penalty and looking by far the most dominant throughout the first-half until conceding an equaliser just before the interval. However, come the second-half Hadley began to justify their present standing of third place in the Spartan, just about deserving the late winner four minutes from time.
It’s always enjoyable to find a football ground in a town centre location, with HTFC tucked away just a couple of minutes walk up from the main High Street next to the local leisure centre. Typically Step5 in its basic set-up, though with a characterful hand-built stand and shelter on the near side, plus a cosy little clubhouse. All really rather likeable in a simplistic way.
It was a relief to avoid the potentially time-consuming matter of penalties - for a start, a pleasantly sunny afternoon had quickly given way to a bitterly cold evening, with frost beginning to form on the pitch. It also meant that, with the help of a quick jog back to the nearby railway station, I managed to catch an earlier train than I’d initially expected to - good job too, because the indicators were warning of a whole string of Thameslink cancellations for the later following services.
