Slough Town 2 Welling United 1

Some were saying that the weather put people off from coming causing the crowd to be a meagre 505.

There was however a lot of local competition which all provided much more exciting matches :-

5,574 : Wycombe Wanderers  5  Cheltenham Town  5

2,324 : Maidenhead United  2  Boreham Wood  0

   209 : Hayes & Yeading United  6  Poole Town  1

But three points for Rebels!!!

Train stations rammed packed with people cancellations and times altered but I still managed to get on train at Swindon in 1st class on a standard ticket with the announcer giving customers the nod to do so.

Rebels picking up another big 3 points.

Wind ruined the game but well done to the squad to come back from 1 down and a cracking goal from Imran and well taken pen from Aarun.

The young lads have shown great resilience all season during losing runs to learn and fight to help the squad turn it around into winning games.

Dubious penalty given against Northy after what looked like an un-avoidable collision wasn't the best of starts but an excellent strike from Imran Kayani and a penalty from Aaron Kuhl gave us a deserved 2-1 lead at half time.

A second half spoilt by the strong wind was devoid of anything memorable apart from a shot from a Welling sub that hit the bar.

On a day where playing any sort of good football was difficult a win and 3 points is all that really matters.

With that swirling wind yesterday's match was never going to be a football fest. Thought Slough just about deserved the three points on the balance of play. I,too, was impressed with Edon Pruti. For a lad only 19 we seem to have unearthed a gem but of course it is early days with him and Welling wasn't exactly the hardest front line attack he will face for the remainder of the season but nonetheless I was impressed by what I saw from him.

While I agree with most of what Jon said in his post match interview,as a spectator[unlike being a manager] it isn't always for me about grinding out results and getting the points in any way we can,as sometimes that can be the most tedious of football to watch ie falling over at every challenge, time wasting, fouling in a cynical way etc. The Welling game wasn't like that thankfully, although I was informed by a fan that against Ebbsflleet away,Slough had done quite a bit of that to get the win. I understand needs must with our current ways of doing things, and getting the result at Ebbsfleet was a wonderful result in my book but from what I've seen of Slough this season,we don't look a bad team in the making imo, and it's great that the club isn't wasting money on buying players on over inflated wages.

We're far from the finished article yet, and to me the play offs is extremely unlikely this season [though, I said that prior to the last season we did make the play offs ! ha ha ! ie I've been wrong before].  I just feel currently the squad hasn't quite got enough quality to make it to a play off place this time around but I don't know about other fans but I'm liking how our managers are moulding the side together this season.

I think for the vast majority of football supporters it's all about winning and getting the 3 points.

Of course it's great if you can do it in style by playing good football and not time wasting or being cynical etc but of course that's not always possible.

Win ugly or lose in style?

One other incident that hasn't been mentioned from yesterdays game, was the superb goal line cleareance by Sean Fraser, who stopped what looked like a certain Welling goal. Good on him,as he deserves a bit of luck, being that he has been in and out of the first team for awhile. We're fortunate he has stuck around.

I know, RR, about the vast majority want winning football but to me that can also be very unrealistic to where the team is, in regards to the way a team plays, the opposition that's being encountered, and player recruitment, money on offer, the stability of the club off the field etc.

If it was every game winning ugly, I wouldn't bother coming to watch. I don't mind watching when a team gets in the relegation places,as long as there is the 'sleeves rolled up' mentality and a certain team spirit. In those circumstances winning ugly has to come into it but when a mid table team resorts to it week in week out, I then think the managers and players are missing the point of why intelligent fans go to watch games [ I added intelligent, not because I consider myself ultra intelligent but that I know there are plenty of fans that will watch any old rubbish!].

To me this season is great opportunity to test the mettle of our young players and we have enough experienced good players to play some good football, when appropriate in what is a difficult league level. I'm not expecting miracles with our assembled squad but it's great to see that the team is prospering, without having to buy our way out of trouble. In fact I would even consider bringing back a couple of our past players to add to the squad,if the budget would allow, and if injuries become significant with the current incumbents.

For me it’s not all about the football I like to meet up with old friends before the game maybe have a drink I go to most games Slough with Small budget try and play nice football not always possible If you cherry pick your games the revenue goes down club budget goes down quality of football goes down Oh I must be thick because I’d always prefer to win than lose whatever

For me it's primarily about the football but as you say it's also about the social side of it.

Unfortunately some people will always 'cherry pick' their games which will not only be for good reasons like affordability, family etc. but also based on the quality of the opposition or whether Chelsea or another Premiership club are at home.

I think in the short term most die hard fans would prefer to win than lose whatever the quality of football played but over time if the football continued to be of a poor quality I think a proportion of the loyal support would start to voice their disapproval.

Each to their own. Nothing is clear cut how individual supporters feel about watching a match but as a fans forum we are ALL entitled to voice an opinion on what we feel is worth a mention and what 'product' we are viewing that our football club is presenting to the paying public ie team play, staff, players, tactics etc.

By the way, Ian GF, I prefer to win than lose, too but for me it's about how we go about it. If we have to resort to winning by cheating, time wasting, fouling unnecessarily, get embroiled in melees and entanglements and downright despicable play to win a game of football, then for me our managers will have lost the plot. Thankfully Bakes and Unders are better managers than that.

I understand that at times teams do resort to the odd amount of cynical play to see out a result. I get that. Every team in the land does it. We are all used to seeing this in football matches. I get frustrated when I watch Ben Harris play because I know he plays on the edge of the rules of the game. I hate when he dives and gets involved in needless shenigans with opposition players. What irks me most is if he stuck to playing a cleaner type game he is a talent. Obviously because of the injuries he's had over the years he's developed his cynical type game to make up for his lack of speed/battling prowess thus to get rewards from poor refs to win free kicks and penalties. I'm fine watching some of his mischievous play. I'm not as fine when he fouls deliberately or play acts to get an opposition player booked or sent off, or when he gets himself booked or sent off !  However, I'm not dumb to the fact that the club, or our managers have carte blanche to bring better strikers to the team,so currently I view Ben as an asset worth keeping. His strike rate is pretty good considering he rarely lasts a full game.

My viewpoint is Slough are doing better than I thought they would this season, and long may that continue. Whether the quality of player/depth of teams is as good in the Conference South as before Covid struck is a debateable point. I wonder if the standard all round has dipped slightly hence why some of our older players are doing better than one would have thought. I'm not looking to undermine any of them here, though,as I'm more than happy on what I've seen so far from our blended squad and am enjoying watching Slough matches again.

Is time wasting cheating going down injured taking lots of time over re starts I bet if the clock was turned off when the ball was out of play Saturday games would finish 5 30 ish

Any form of time wasting is cheating.

That's why Refs will either issue a card or add time on at the end or both.

It won't say the word cheating in the laws of the game but possibly something like 'not in the spirit of the game' and left to the discretion of the ref as to what action he will take.

Rather luckily for me, I intended to go to Hayes & Yeading United v Truro City last evening but after a rather busy day, I just did not get ready to go in time. I'll be there next Tuesday against Steve Claridge's Salisbury. Here are some excerpts from yesterday's match report showing you what I missed :-

"A stoppage time Omar Rowe strike brought about by the visitors excessive time-wasting saw United extend their lead at the top of the Southern Premier South to five points with a single goal victory over Truro City at the SKYex.

The first 45 minutes have got to be the poorest at the SKYex all season as the ultra-defensive visitors stood firm with a five man defence.

The 30th minute saw a caution for Truro’s Ollie Tomlinson for pulling back Amartey, only for the same player to repeat the exact same offence just three minutes later with referee Warren correctly issuing a second caution and automatic red card.

Unsurprisingly, the second half was pretty much played in the visitors half of the field. United continued to push against the eight man defensive wall put up by the visitors in the final ten minutes. As the game was entering into additional time, goalkeeper Mac Chisholm’s constant time wasting saw him fall foul of referee Warren who penalised him for holding the ball far too long and also dished out a caution to the ‘keeper while awarding United an indirect free-kick just inside the box. This was to prove the pivotal point of the game as Connors tapped the ball to Rowe who saw his perfectly executed shot curve around the wall into the bottom corner of the White Tigers net."

Sounds like you didn't miss much Shredding.

U'As scraping in against 10 man Truro.

Indirect free kick inside the area for holding onto the ball for too long by the keeper.

Don't remember that rule being dished out for years.

Still every team needs a bit of luck along the way.
