Slough Town 2-0 Tooting & Mitcham

When the current squad are all fit, I reckon Gary could be right about the 3-5-2 but only play it if 3 of Murphy/Moller/Daly/Gyoury are fit. If we end up playing the 3 with Brown/Bartley or one of the midfielders dropped back, it is dangerous but I think with 3 of those 4 proper centre backs it could work. Personally when everyone's fit my 11 would be

GK Foster

CB Daly

CB Murphy

CB Gyoury (or Moller)

LM Steer

RM Haddow (or Harris)

CM Hakki

CM Wilkinson

CM Spencer

ST Hodges

ST Boot (or Miller)

No, no no no no 4-4-2!!!!

GK: Foster

RB: Riddell (Done well still need a natural RB though)

LB: Barras

CD: Daly

CD: Murphy / Gyoury / Moller (Hard one to pick)

CM: Wilko

CM: Hakki

RM: Spencer

LM: Haddow

CF: Hodge

CF: Boot

Strong bench now from Williams, Steer, Harris, Miller, Deaner, Hyatt & Centre Backs mentioned above.

Things are strangely becoming to look a little brighter, which is worrying...

Steer made more runs, butwas getting blocked all the time, unlike Tuesday. Thouht Hakki made all the difference when he came on---someone who can pass a ball at last.

Agree with that Ted, but i'd also add that I thought Haddow made a big difference as well when he came on at the same time. He gave us more quality on the ball as well.

Cheers Dom <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Having had an opportunity to wander out on the pitch yesterday it struck me how much worse it is than it looks from the sidelines. The penalty area was particularly boggy and very uneven. It made me realise how much more difficult it must be to play simple passes than we sometimes give them credit for.

That said, I thought I tucked the penalty in the corner with some aplomb!!

Harris and Steer MUST play on the right and left wings respectively, but the other two midfield places are an issue. When fit, one would assume Wilkinson and Spencer would play BUT where would that leave others such as Hakki.... the point made above about needing at least one defensively minded player in the middle is spot on, as Spencer/Hakki/Haddow/Hyatt are all essentially attackers.

So if looking at it, 3-5-2 system wouldn't necessarily be a bad idea, with Harris, Spencer, Hakki, Wilkinson and Steer (or Haddow if needed) across the midfield. And the bench would also be strong with the likes of Matt Miller and Freddie Hyatt. I agree, things ARE starting to look up regarding the quality of players available.

What I was trying to do was accomodate the players that we have at our disposal. Our defence appears to be our weak link in terms of strength in depth outside of centre back, so in that respect playing 3-5-2 would make the most of the strong midfield that we would have at our disposal.

Having said that, yes, I would prefer to play 4-4-2 but would feel sorry for Harris to be dropped for Spencer, and nor would I play Spencer in the middle ahead of Wilkinson/Hakki as it would lose the natural balance of the midfield as you would have no ball winner in there.

I thought Wilko had a very strong game yesterday and believe the central midfield pairing should be Hakki and Wilko come Saturday. For the remaining two midfield positions we are bloody lucky to have choice between Harris/Spencer and Steer/Haddow. The two left on the bench would be unlucky but it would see the whole midfield playing for their places. The defence should be as per Saturday; but we should be looking for a genuine right back and that is not meant as an insult against Riddell just someone more natural in that position would be preferable.

Up front Boot and Hodge. With Miller, Deaner and Seedal pushing them hopefully.

I really think we have the basis of a top six squad easily and if we can start to perform consistently I think we will make it.

Come on you rebels.

Christ there must be something in the water I have gone all optimistic.

I suppose, another major point about selection is that at this level, there are nearly always players unavailable every week. The only thing that I am basing my selection on is putting in the players I think must start and then playing round them. In the current squad there are 6 players who I think must play when fit who are

Foster (no other keeper, unfortunately)

Daly (anyone who follows these posts will see this is a change of heart on my part from a couple of moths back)

Steer (I believe that Danny has the ability to get round anyone on his day)

Hakki (when he is fit and on form he will be the best player in our squad (including Spencer))

Spencer (surprise, surprise)

Hodge (most potent attacking threat)

The other five places are up for grabs IMO and because, as Gary said, I think with the players on offer, they fit better into a 3-5-2.

Really enjoyed the game on Saturday - well worth all the travelling - there was even a bit of atmosphere in the second half from the Slough fans behind the goal.

Veli is definetly our get-out-of-jail card that we need for a top six place, and after Saturdays performance against a strong Tooting i'm all optimistic that we can achieve it. Also thought Glen Harris had a good game. Also loved the programme notes by Roy about Veli "leaving in most unusual circumstances."

It was never 3-5-2 it was always 3-4-3 which i really objected to, it was a waste when the 3 strikers were never all on form, it would have been better to play the 2 on form ones. We cant play 3 upfront now that we have Veli back.

Looking at the squad now I think we should really push a top 6 place. And we can keep Miller on the bench too!

i think it's quite weird that now we've got veli back, suddenly we have a surplus of players. Is everyone forgetting that he's only one man?

But only in the midfield department. We now have a real choice: Spencer, Harris, Bartley, Hyatt, Wilko, Hakki, Steer, Haddow, Williams.

Nine, I would say two too many. But have I forgotten anyone?

It's not just Veli that has come back, Harris has come back into the fray in Spencers absence and Willow joined added two to possibly our strongest area? Would still like to see a real pacy right winger added to the ranks along with a pacy full back or sweeper.
