It was the 2nd round of the Amateur cup against St Albans in the 1971/72 season.

Here's a piece of an article about it:

City’s FA Cup campaign ended abruptly with a 3-0 Preliminary Round defeat at Romford and our Amateur Cup run again failed to get past the Second Round. Harwich & Parkeston, on the back of a spectacular display by goalkeeper and future manager Tony Armstrong, held out for a draw on the Essex coast but went down 4-0 at the Park with Dave finally ending their resistance with a glorious strike from fully 35 yards. But the run ended amid controversy and in a blood bath at Slough Town’s Dolphin Stadium. Fewer than 20 minutes had passed when Neville, who scored the first City goal, was kicked and Bill Ratty ran across to help his team mate only to be given a broken jaw in a clash with Slough captain Roger Day. The Athenian League club secured a 3-2 victory with a highly disputed penalty four minutes from time. Hendon ended City’s reign as London Senior Cup holders but Neville did step forward to collect the Mithras Cup and Herts Charity Cup.

Sitting in the main stand at The Dolphin, the Roger Day incident happened right in front of me but on the blind side of the referee. Two teeth or parts thereof came flying out of Bill Ratty's mouth upon impact.

The most disgraceful incident that I have ever witnessed by a player in a football match. Nowadays, a lot more action would be taken by the club and legally if such an incident occurred.  But Roger Day was allowed to play a further 65 matches for Slough Town.

As you were a witness to the incident SG, was there any provocation for this 'disgraceful incident'?

It was 49 years 11 months and 20 days ago! One doesn't necessarily notice little matters going on between players but I can't recall any aggression from Bill Ratty.

That's because everybody agrees with Jon Underwood's post-match interview.

To placate RR a little bit, my take on yesterday is as follows;

- I don’t think we were as poor as some are making out and we certainly didn’t deserve to lose 6-1. Having said that, 2-3 of our usual most consistent performers were a little off the boil yesterday (thought Freddie and Aaron in particular were not at their best) and we defended poorly from front to back.

- Tyler was by far our best player imo, he looked dangerous every time he had the ball and set up alfonso’s goal with quick thinking as well as setting up his offside goal with a typical mazy dribble.

- Disappointing that we missed another penalty; at 4-2 it COULD have changed the game with the momentum shift. What happened after was definitely instigated by the 2 (although I didn’t see any spitting, he basically did an impression of Martin known after ruud van nistelrooy missed a penalty in the early 2000’s) but Ben has to be smarter in that situation, as he basically practised judo in pulling the 2 to the floor. The ref got alerted to the incident at exactly the wrong time, as the 2 had done his bit when he wasn’t watching.

- Certainly didn’t come away feeling like we’d lost 6-1, just that we’d been beaten by the better team on the day. Confident that those travelling next week will see a big reaction to yesterdays performance.

RR my view is slightly different.

First half some incredibly well taken goals and yes maybe some of the team where a few gears down from previous recent performances in this half.

Sometimes you just have to applaud good football in how they pulled our midfield and defence out of shape at times.

Chippenham executed there game plan very well 1st half, even in the warm up you could hear the Chippenham lads being rallied about working hard and winning 1st and 2nd balls by the coaching team and that relayed in how they came out of the blocks at the whistle.

Second half I thought Slough had them on the ropes for long periods of this and I am sure that Alfonso was not offside when he scored his second, the left back played him on who was desperately waving his hand in the air for off-side, so that plus the pen could have been a game changer along with at least four other decent attempts on goal in this half.  Once we went down to 10 was always going to be a big ask of the lads left on the field.

A number of parents clubs where watching their assets yesterday playing for Chippenham, along with a handful of additional scouts watching of which I knew some of them, they pretty much said the same about the game in general.

On to next week, up the rebels.

You probably meant Martin Keown in this match on 21st September 2003 :-

I might be wrong but I think the 'spitting culprit' was shown a yellow card probably for shoving his head into Ben's face.

Perhaps he was frothing at the mouth like a rabid dog rather than actually spitting.

Good highlights from Chippenham Town of the match :-

I have also just watched Billericay Town 1 Maidstone United 1. It was Bottom v Top at kick-off but a fantastic hard fought match showed no indication of that at all.

Just to clear this up Ben was not aware of anyone spitting at him. I have seen/heard a few comments on this and maybe someone did spit but this wasn’t the reason for Ben’s reaction and it’s not something we can defend.

Thanks for clearing that up Unders.

At the game quite a few people said Ben reacted because he was spat at but obviously that was not correct.

Well having watched the 90 minutes last night and then also the highlights this morning, I can only be thankful that when we as a club put on a highlights package that we show chances for both teams….

Looking at it in the cold light of day, we were not quite up to our usual levels, however 6-1 is not a fair reflection of the game, I think some of their moves and finishing was top drawer on the day, whilst 2/3 goals we have to ask a few questions for.

However we have also had chances, and if the goal is not disallowed at 4-1 with 25 (which does not look offside from the footage) to go I honestly think we have a chance of getting something out of the game down the hill, and with what we have done in the past nobody can say that is crazy.

It didn’t happen, and we have to confine that game to the bin, regroup and move on.

I hope to be at York, but will depend on a few things with my Dad, however get behind the lads, and make it a real away day.

All the best, Neil, to you and your Dad. Some things are way more important than football matches, even big cup ties.
