Hemel Hempstead A 11th Dec

It was nice to see Windsor Rebel mention a name I remember well from the past, namely Frank Parsons.

Was he Slough's best ever keeper ?

Not in my estimation for what it's worth , but I definitely thought he was the roughest, toughest goalie I've seen representing Slough.

I thought he was , errrrrrrrr........... a bit of a nutter between the sticks !

Wasn't it one season in the FA Cup he scored the winner with a wind assisted goal kick, and then in the very next round got sent off for violent play at Poole in a 3- 0  defeat, when Slough if my memory serves me right finished the game with only 8 men after 3 were sent off  in what was a very violent match?

Talking of names from the past, I have mentioned before on here that I enjoy watching old editions of "The Big Match"  which are shown on ITV4.

This past weekend's edition featured the FA Cup 4th round from late January 1981 , and one of the games shown was Barnsley v. Enfield.

The commentator was Martin Tyler. ( Whatever happened to him ? )

At this time Enfield were one of the strongest non-league teams in the country, and that season were locked in a championship battle for the Isthmian League title with Slough.

Enfield drew this game 1-1, but should have won.

Barnsley's goal came from a free-kick given for handball when the linesman flagged for the Enfield goalie having carried the ball a fraction outside his area when making a drop kick from his hands.

This decision would never be given now, although I'm sure it happens regularly from what I see.

One of the Enfield players was John Bishop.

A few weeks after this FA Cup tie (Enfield lost the replay 3-0 at Tottenham in front of 35,000 I believe) , he signed for Slough, and was a regular member of the Slough team for the rest of that season.

He started for Slough in that classic title deciding match at Sutton , when with 2 late goals we just pipped Enfield to the championship.

Happy memories !

Looking up historical records often encounters inaccuracies and uncertainties.

According to the Slough Town historical records Sean Lahiff played 15 matches for Slough between 1/9/90 and 12/1/91.

Slough were in the Conference in the 1990/1 season and Enfield in the Isthmian League.

Ok the game was at Enfield 15/04/2000? Danny Honey in goal.

Frank Parsons ran a newsagent/shop in Eton high street just by the bridge. As a teenager I would go in and look at him behind the counter but I was too in awe of him to say anything...

Just watched the supposed 'wonder goal' for the Hemel equalizer.

Yes he struck it well but what poor marking/defensive play from us.

Really?! On second watch I though it showed what a great move up the pitch it was from Hemel as well as a brilliant strike. Credit where credit is due.

I would love to understand at what point someone could have done something about it RR? As soon as the ball was laid off Kuhly and Max both tried to get close, however you don’t stay side by side to a player throughout a game otherwise there would be no goals in football…. Give them the credit they deserve, it was a well worked goal, and a brilliant finish.

Having looked at it a few times more the 'wonder goal' was not as badly defended as I first thought.

Having said that there was an an overload on the far side i.e. George Hunt was marking a player with a spare Hemel player out wide.

George was then forced to leave his man to pick up the un-marked wide player which created the space for the goal scorer.

Perhaps I'm being over critical but I think Max could have done better to help George out.

As viewed from behind the Slough goal , i actually "enjoyed" that Hemel move & strike.

Sometimes you just have to give credit to the opposition & take it on the chin.

Equally i also enjoyed Lenchy's tip over the bar in the second half , although i thought he might have caught it.?

Totally agree, as most people have said it was a great strike.

I may have mentioned it before but I worked alongside Mike Preston, whom the older amongst us might remember as a very fine centre half for Kingstonian, Sutton United etc. I mentioned Frank Parsons to him once and he smiled ruefully and said "He broke my jaw once." I asked him who he had been playing against when it happened and he named the team. Then he said, "But Frank was our goalkeeper and we were both trying to defend the same corner!"

My Slough goalkeepers go back as far as Alf Wiltshire, albeit he was in the twilight of his career. Amongst my memories are Geoff Redford being sent off at Chesham for flooring their centre forward, Chris Reynolds' style and athleticism, Paul Barron making some tremendous saves, especially in a home win against Wycombe in the FA Trophy, and the late Graham Roope's perfect analysis of one game, one win, no goals conceded in a Trophy victory over Minehead at Twerton Park. Maybe the biggest shout-out, however, was for Wilko's penalty save at Stevenage.
