H&W H 27th Nov FA Trophy

We really need a good cup run both for the excitement and achievement but more so for the money stream it can provide

H&W are talking the talk saying how confident they are and we only beat them recently when they had four injuries to cope with! Yeah Right!

The last few weeks have shown us that we can beat the best teams when we bring our A game  Let's hope we are at our best  later and progress to the next round.

I went to Maidstone United where the bookies odds for a Rebels win were 4:1 and at home to Dorking Wanderers they were 2.5:1. So I am optimistic that the odds of 2.4:1 quoted for a Rebels win today are good value.

I will be at :-

Out of interest, why the dislike of Billy Clifford? Did he do or say anything after he left us?

I just recall him being tremendous for us at the end of the 2018/9, took us from a season that looked like it was going to be a mid table finish to one where with minutes of the season remaining we could still have made the play-offs (our record with him in the team was W5 D5 L1).

He was a local lad & a fans favourite and if we could have kept one player from the 2018/9 season I would have kept him. I got the impression we managed to afford him on a short term loan, but couldn’t get anywhere near the wages he could command the following season.

We hardly had to pay anything for him when on loan from Billericay, as they were covering most of it.

Not even in his ball park financially, there was no issues from any of us though when he left, as he knew it, and we knew it…. I think there was just a little bit of friendly banter with him today though wasn’t there?

Although a 3rd round tie against higher local opposition like Maidenhead, Woking, Aldershot or one of the big teams (Notts County, Wrexham, Chesterfield etc…) should create a lot of interest, I’d personally prefer we draw a lower league side and have a better chance of progressing and collecting more prize money. The worst draws would be any team from our division or one of the smaller National sides.

That's how I heard it Neil - he skied one free kick and the guys behind the goal had a quick chorus of "Slough Town reject" - no malice at all

The 3rd Round draw will have north and south sections.

So we won't be drawn against Chesterfield but could face a long trip to Truro City, or to pastures new at Larkhall Athletic, Needham Market or Plymouth Parkway or a local derby with Uxbridge.

But whoever we are drawn against, I am at a concert in Highgate on the afternoon of 18th December.

I suppose that one should by now have learned how to live with seeing the terms "higher local opposition" and "Maidenhead United" in close juxtaposition but, as we used to say in the days of continuous performances at the Granada, Adelphi and Ambassador, "This is where I came in."

Excellent performances all round and a very satisfying win against our 'friends' from Havant.

I though Alphonso's work rate, closing down etc was first class, not dis-similar to Matty Stevens.

Reportedly some Havant supporters were complaining about having to pay £15.

I suppose it's par for the course that they had to find something to whinge about.

Excellent win in very poor conditions  Off we go on a long overdue cup run and this Cup is no longer the preserve of a handful of top non league teams  Won last season by a lower level club than ourselves  It really could be ours!

Of course it's not impossible but squad depth and finances normally play a large part.

Not taking anything away from Hornchurch but they were a well financed club.

On Billy Clifford, he did what 99.99% of players would do and went where the money is, so can't blame him for that.

I suppose him saying he had a genuine affection for the club/loved playing for Slough etc might have led some naive supporters to think that he would join us permanently.

I only heard a bit of light hearted banter which I'm sure didn't upset him too much.

Afternoon all.

Cold yesterday wasn't it ?

I can remember being at school and having double games on a Wednesday afternoon, and running out wearing my football kit  onto the school pitch in the middle of winter, with snow being driven

horizontally  across the frozen ground by a gale force wind, and  not even noticing the freezing temperature. In fact being very disappointed when we had to finish after an hour and a half and go in and get changed.

Yesterday, nearly half a century later, I' m wearing thermals, two jumpers, two pairs of socks, a thick jacket, a scarf, gloves and a hat and looking forward to getting somewhere warm at the final whistle

as soon as I get through the turnstile !

Youth is wasted on the young !

Another awful FA Trophy draw for us, home to Havant, but we are through to the next round.

Quite deservedly in my view.

I  felt all game that Havant were never going to score, which is a strange feeling for me as most weeks I worry the opposition are going to score every time they cross the half-way line.

We had some great chances to make the scoreline more emphatic, Ben ,Max and Alphonso all could have scored, but one was enough in the end.

My second rated highlight of the game was George Hunt's turn to once again bamboozle two opposition defenders, and lay a great chance off to Max.

If Max had put that chance away it would have been a great goal.

I'm pleased the highlights show this move. (George's skill was worth the entrance fee on its own. )

Sorry George, but my highlight of the day has to be the linesman at the far side of the ground, who, while running past me in the direction of the half-way line quite clearly called a Havant fan

a  "knob"  for querying a decision the lino had just made.

Well said Sir!

You don't get  entertainment like that in the "Greed is Good"  Premiership !

Ever since we've been in the National League South I've felt we have had a great opportunity to have a decent run in the Trophy.

In my view  there are only the teams in the National League that you would think on paper should be a grade above us, and are they that bothered about the Trophy ?

( Yes I know there are a few clubs in our division with greater budgets etc than us, but should we be scared of them?      No.)

Remembering reading the Torquay fans forum that season we were "privileged" to be in the same division as their mighty club, many of their fans thought being non-league was beneath them.

The ex Football League teams might get interested when they get to the semi-finals but before this ?

I'm thinking they are fully focused on getting out of the National League, and most of the "proper" non-league teams in this division are more concerned with staying in it ?

And already this year it seems we have lost over half the National League South teams and a third of the National League North teams.

I would love Slough Town to get to Wembley.  Probably more so than to get to the FA Cup 3rd round.

I was there in 1973 when we played in the Amateur Cup Final, but I wasn't an avid Rebel fan then, and wasn't there at the semi-final when we reached Wembley.

That must have been an incredible feeling.

I was there at the losing Trophy semi-finals in '77 and '98, and I'm sure I will get over the disappointment soon.

Why can't we get to the final this season ?

Blimey, Concord Rangers and Hornchurch have made it in the last few years so why not us ?

Here's hoping for some decent draws for us in the rounds to come, starting tomorrow.

Dartford, here we come !

( Please God no. )
