'I don't moan about my lot'

Graeme Tomlinson, Exeter City

The Guardian

Graeme Tomlinson, 26, heard that he was being released by Exeter last month. He has played for Bradford and Manchester United among others.

Alex Ferguson signed me for Manchester United after he had seen me play for Bradford against them in the FA Youth Cup.

In 1994, my first year at United I was in the reserves and the youth team playing up front with Paul Scholes. Phil and Gary Neville, Nicky Butt and David Beckham were also in the team. I was going really well and in the second year I was sent to Luton to get a bit more experience but I broke my leg very badly in a game against Port Vale.

Eventually I was back and doing well for the A team and reserves but then I went on loan to Bournemouth and Millwall but I didn't ever make the breakthrough to the first team. When I had two or three months left on my contract, Alex Ferguson came to me and said "at the very top level you haven't got that extra bit you did have before the leg break".

So I signed for Macclesfield but that did not work out and came to Exeter a couple of years ago.

The new manager, John Cornforth, brought me into the office a couple of times during the season and said "I want you to sign a new deal but it is up to the board" and they wanted to get the wages down. So the guys on the higher wages were in trouble. In March he explained that his hands were tied and it was strictly a financial decision to let me go.

I will wait and see what happens to me in the future. I would go part-time, though, at non-league level.

I do have other interests. I have taken my coaching badge although I am not particularly thinking of staying in the game when my playing days are over. I have been DJing for about 10 years and I would love to do that full time.

I want to get back into the game but since breaking my leg football has not ruled my life. You see people in the street every day who have real problems. I don't moan about my lot.

As said above, Tomlinson came off the bench to score from a free kick against us earlier in the season.

Although I'm not sure he's ever going to be the most prolific striker at this level, I do think he could provide a useful foil for another forward - Hockton (when fit) or KK or Stowe. When we went to Bedford at the back end of last season I remember him playing a sort of "Sheringham" type role off the main striker which he did very well on that occasion.

Of course he hasn't signed for us yet - and we've seen enough players "expected to sign" who didn't for one reason or another to know not to get too excited until we see him out there in the blue and white <img src="/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
