Who Do You Consider To Be....

As part of the research I do for the Football Manager game, there is a section for club favourites/icons/legends and also playing rivals. Whilst I have added some entries in there, would be keen to get a feeling for others views on who they consider to meet those criteria.

Club favourites are of a lower status than icons, and icons a step down from legends.

Rivals is a tricky one as I don't really think we have any current, meaningful rivalries with any other sides? I have Wycombe in there as an historical rivalry, along with Windsor and Maidenhead as local derbies, but even Windsor is debateable for me now given how long since we've had any encounters with them.

Keen to hear different views though, so please do let me know your suggestions.

Current inclusions are shown in the images:

Gary Abbott was a legendary player for me. 35 goals in 94 appearances when Rebels were at their peak.

I must be right as upon his appointment as manager, the Fisher FC website had the headline "Non-league legend Gary Abbott returns as Manager."

Living in Iver, I certainly consider Hayes & Yeading United as a rival and it is very likely that that rivalry will be recommenced in National League South next season. We just need Rebels to stay up and U 'As to go up!

I think Hungerford have to be considered a current rival..but nothing compares to the historical rivalry with Wycombe.

I'd reclassify some of your icons to legends. If Steve Daly is a legend then surely our all time top appearance record holder, Terry Reardon, is a legend as would number 2, Keith White.

For me personally there's usually been a midfield player whose combined skill and attitude of never giving up makes a big difference so I'd put forward Geoff Anthony 109 appearances, 28 goals, Welsh amateur international, speedy old school winger and Steve Thompson 109 appearances 64 goals for at least icon status. (IMHO Warren Harris is creeping towards that level too - we've missed him so far this season.)

Wycombe for me years ago, but really cant say that now. It was always Windsor & Eton for me and to a certain aspect, Hayes with their dirty keeper Hyde (who knocked Keith White out cold one afternoon).

Steve Thompson legend for me (loved watching him week in week out, quality) and Neal Stanley, getting that winner at Bromley last day of the season.

Steve Thompson definitely should be in the Legend listing. Most skilful player I've ever seen play in a Slough shirt.Older fans may have others.

Trevor Bunting for his loyalty to the club should be recognised, too. Mark Fiore ought to be on the radar too, as he was comitted to the Slough cause for quite some time, and is one that has turned out regularly for our Legends side.

Brian McDermott is the right pick especially with all his links to Slough.

I think Steve Bateman would also be a choice, as he played for the club and also managed the club for more than just a couple of seasons.

Bakes and Unders should be included as they have got the team promoted [twice] and you can't question their loyalty or the help they've given to the club.

By the way, you could claim Woking as a rival team,as it is never very bon homie when we play them [on the terraces or on the pitch].

As much as Gary Abbott is a non league legend,to me he didn't play or commit to Slough Town fc long enough, and really made his name at Welling[among others]. If you include him you would have to have Mark West who really is a Wycombe Wanderers legend and Cliff Hercules, who as good as he was for Slough really made his name at Aylesbury Town. Then you open up a can of worms for loads of players.

Funny enough it's a pity there wasn't a Cult status category, spelt with an L [not an N ! ha ha! ] as there are plenty of players for all different reasons[characters, nice blokes, dodgy geezers, terrible haircuts, strange behaviours etc] that could be included,as an example like Gary Abbott, Jeff Bateman, Dave Woozley, Matt Miller, Alex Brown, Phil Stacey, Dean Palmer, Trevor Howard, Jake Parsons, Ed Smith, Ben Edwards, Wazza, Ian Hazel, Neil Stanley,Vernon Pratt, Ian Hodges, Danny Steer, NBH, Simon Sweeney,Manny Williams, Simon Ullathorne, Danny Bolt, Johnny Dyer,Tony Knight etc, etc.

Some we even had nicknames for like Spider because he was all legs, Psycho because he was going to get you at some point in the game and Piggy because he always looked overweight. Not politically correct these days ,I know but harmless football banter by fans on the terraces back in the day. Ah, the way we were !

Some good names from the past there SD.

I would certainly class Wilko as a legend with John Delaney, Bobby Hatt, Les Hartridge, and the rest as icons or favourites.

BTW looking at our excellent player database Jim Hartridge only played 19 games for Slough.

Dave Kemp only played 48 games and managed Slough for one season reaching 5th place.

Back in the day when the club was struggling financially, I used to drive to away games with Steve Daly, and believe me,  he, along with Darren Wilkinson were absolutely

committed to STFC when players were leaving left right and centre. Also, towards the end of his career he was getting bad headaches, but still played on regardless.

I still see him now and again for a beer as  recently he was still working shifts at the airport as he used to live over Ashford way. So in my opinion these two are legends.

Felt for Darren as you say Nigel gave his all during his time with us but missed the Bryco Cup Final against Hampton through injury can remember saying this to him at Bognor after the last game of  season on a hot sat afternoon.

As well as Steve Daly Jamie Jackson gave his all to the club as well, his interview with Ade just highlighted what was happening behind the scenes.

Sometimes difficult to decide whether someone was principally "our" player or some other team's especially with so many moving around a lot. I would nominate Alf Wiltshire, Bogdan Jakubiec and John Ford, all of whose records speak for themselves. Tim Turl and John Beyer were loyal stalwarts of the post Tommy Lawrence era.

I thought John Ford was an excellent player, hardly ever had a bad game.

Certainly I'd  go for Bogdan  John Delaney jolted my memory I used to live as a youngster in Shackleton Road with a long garden backing onto the Horlicks sports field  John turned out for Horlicks on Sundays quite often  and also in Summer for the cricket team

Peter Feely anyone?  Never saw him play, but remember an old man would always shout out "send for Feely!" whenever Slough needed a goal...
