I wonder how this one will pan out especially after Phil Granville's recent departure at Haywood Way:

London Colney 2 Oxhey Jets 1

Filthy afternoon at Cotlandswick but a decent game considering.

Much improved Jets dominated the first half but fell behind on 25 minutes, when the right back slipped allowing the left winger plenty of time to pick his man in the box, and he finished with ease.

Tom Inch was able to get behind the defence 3 minutes later though after another defensive slip, and kept his composure to draw the keeper and convert, a well taken finish.

Chances were few and far between at both ends, but Oxhey will feel unlucky to have gone in level when on top.

The hosts sprang out of the traps after the break, and sustained pressure told 10 minutes in, a scuffed shot from the penalty spot got a double deflection to wrongfoot the keeper, the second of which came off the increasingly unfortunate number 2.

To compound his miserable afternoon minutes later his unintentional cross shot came off the inside of the post and bounced clear; 9 times out of 10 it would've been a goal, but not today.

Colney had the better of the second 45 but Jets had their chances, including a period of half a dozen corners in quick succession.

Ultimately it wasn't to be, and the scoreline would have been 3-1 but for an outstanding save from the impressive new custodian.

Might have been as many as half a dozen new faces again, no team sheets available so not able to compare, but the stopper and the centre half 5 (who debuted last week) did well, so too the 11, though he needs to at least challenge if he can't tackle, because teams aren't just going to give up the ball. Once in possession he was dangerous on the left, and no doubt better conditions would suit his style.

Many positives to take for both sides, Colney also have a new side this year I'm told and looked solid if not spectacular, certainly an improvement on the last 2 seasons for them.

Another week to work with the players (weather permitting) should stand Jets in good stead before the visit of Leighton next Saturday. No doubt they will travel in numbers, but if they come expecting a walkover they will be disappointed; the New Salamis debacle is well behind us ?

What a great advert for Division 2 our game against Pitstone was. 2 teams going at it, end to end all game. Either side could have won and very grateful it was us in the end. Pitstone probably the best team we’ve played this season and I expect they will be up there at the end.

Was nice to visit Pitstone after all the work they’ve had done. It’s a superb set up over there now and was great to speak to a few of their committee who provided excellent hospitality.

What a start for Steve Bateman at Haywood Way, well at Tithe Farm, although his trusted assistant Ryan Collings was in charge of the team with Steve watching from the stand, Jake Baldwin netted an impressive hat trick:

Division One
Letchworth Garden City Eagles 1 Wellingborough Whitworth 5

Letchworth Garden City Eagles had good early season wins over Northampton Sileby Rangers, Buckingham Athletic and Irchester United but the chickens seem to be coming home to roost now, a groundhopper from another Forum was in attendance yesterday:

LETCHWORTH GARDEN CITY EAGLES [0] 1 WELLINGBOROUGH WHITWORTHS [2] 5 South Midlands Division 1. Admission £5 / £2 .Programme £1. Att; 33. Windy and wet pleased there was a small 50 seater stand which kept the crowd dry.The clubhouse and changing rooms are situated behind the car park. The ground is behind the Herts FA Headquarters and as you enter the complex you pass the rugby club . The visitors on top in the first period and should have been leading by more than the 2 goals.Letchworth pulled a goal back in the 2nd half and looked like they might equalise but then had a player sent off and Whitworths took full advantage and scored 3 more goals to finish easy winners.

I see that Milton Keynes College Football Academy came down to earth with a bump on Saturday, they were getting too big for their boots weren't they.

Division Two
Eynesbury United 2 Berkhamsted Comrades 2

Both sides of the story from a competitive match at Hall Road on Saturday:

https://www.pitchero.com/clubs/berkhamstedfootballclub/teams/242628/match-centre/1-9856050/report

Spartan South Midlands Division 2
Eynesbury United (0) 2 Berkhamstead Comrades (1) 2
United battled back from two goals down to pick up a point against the Comrades in what was a very entertaining game.
With the Bulls one place ahead in the league, this was always going to be a tight affair and so it proved to be.
United started brightly enough but never got the ball in the last third right, and a number of good moments that could of developed never materialised. The clearest chance fell to Ryan Baxter but his header flashed wide. And the aforementioned player flashed a number of good balls across the box but nobody could get on the end of them. And as is usual in football if you don’t take your chances you get punished, and from a Berkhamstead corner a well placed shot beat Jeckells in the Bulls goal and the Comrades were one up.
Though it did seem like United had plenty of possession the Comrades forced Jeckells into three class first half saves, so to this point I suppose going in one down was a bit of a blessing.
So on to the second half, and again United kept pushing, and again a body or wayward effort saw United becoming frustrated, and this amplified when a long range effort deflected of Baxter past Jeckells.
Two down and something need to go the Bulls way, Aidan McLean was brought on and this seemed to up the Bulls tempo, and minutes later Ryan Baxter powered in from the right and drove an unstoppable shot past the Comrades keeper. All of a sudden the dynamic of the game changed, and on 73 minutes he again drove into the box, this time being fouled. Penalty, a chance to bring the game level. Up stepped Shane Fox whose effort was well saved and the rebound superbly blocked. United though continued to keep on the front foot and a number of chances came and went, however on 83 minutes Baxter again drilled his way past the Comrades defensive line to shoot home 2-2. Relief all round but United kept going trying to get the winner. Lee Bassett had the best chance when his header went just wide. However it could have been another story in the last minute when a great surging run through saw the Comrades player in the clear, however from nowhere McLean launched himself into a great tackle and the danger was averted. Comrades still had a chance to win the game in the dying seconds when a great ball to the far post saw the striker hit a rasping volley only for man of the match Jeckells to make an unbelievable stop.
And so the spoils were shared in what was a great game where both teams gave their all. and this was also down to the referee Mr Poole who was excellent throughout. The Bulls are away to Bovingdon next week 3:00pm.
