Only the second FA Vase tie I have ever seen at Plantation Park the previous one being on Saturday 21st November 1992 when Norwich United defeated Stamford 3-0 in a Second Round match. All three goals in that 1992 match came in the first half just as they did today. New Salamis just about deserved the win and they started the game strongly going ahead in the 8th minute when Arti Krasniqi scored with a low drive after some good passing play. Norwich Utd got back into the match and after going close several times made it 1-1 after 33 minutes when Liam Jackson headed home from a corner despite desperate efforts by the Salamis defence to clear the ball off the line. After both sides had chances to take the lead Salamis regained the lead in the 44th minute when Derek Asamoah, a Norwich Utd defender and advancing Norwich Utd goal keeper Ryan Dickerson all got in a bit of tangle chasing a through ball, the ball eventually breaking to Asamoah who slotted the ball into an empty net. The second half saw Norwich Utd dominate possession but despite this they rarely looked like getting an equaliser one of their better attempts coming from a fierce Mac Gee header which was just over the crossbar. New Salamis thanks to the clever hold up play of Asamoah always looked dangerous on the break and Dickerson saved well and another good effort was hacked away by the Norwich Utd defence. The last few minutes saw almost constant pressure on the New Salamis defence but they held out well for the win much to the jubilation of their team and travelling fans at the end of the match. This was my first return since the 1991/92 season. For a "new" ground, I was disappointed that it felt quite dilapidated already. As for the game, Baldock were the better side throughout, but found themselves one down on 10 minutes - Borough scoring with their first attack through number 4, though I felt the home keeper could have done better. The hosts levelled within 90 seconds, some good play by number 9 to work an opening, and he finished confidently. Seven minutes later, number 10 fired a free kick into the top corner to give Baldock the lead - 2-1 at half time. On 65 minutes, after some good work sown the right, a low cross was turned in by Baldock's number 9 for his second and Baldock's third. Number 10 struck another free kick on 84 minutes, the ball crashing off the underside of the bar into the net, and 9 completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot three minutes into stoppage time. FA Vase 1st Round Baldock Town 5-1 Hillingdon Borough @ Arlesey FC Entry: £7 Attendance: guessing at 110 or so An enjoyable match for the neutral: I thought that there was just the right balance of flair and cavalier disorganisation among players of both sides to make for a watchable contest. The two goals scored by the Baldock no.10, free-kicks curled around the defensive walls, were worth turning up for alone. And it was also refreshing that, on the whole, the match was played in a fairly decent and respectful manner all round (excepting the brief bout of handbags late on, which seemed to come out of nowhere). As Karb mentions above, for a relatively newly developed ground, the place certainly appears to be going to seed. Both gents toilets were in need of a clean, and some of the litter bins were still overflowing from Saturday’s Arlesey FC home fixture. On top of that, the far wooden fence has long fallen down and there seem to be weeds and vegetation overgrowing everywhere - generally just a lack of care or pride from the landlords. A shame, because the amount of concrete terracing here is quite impressive, particularly the steep bank of a dozen steps that sits tall and tight behind the far goal. The town of Arlesey itself is little more than a ribbon of suburbia strung out along a B-Road with a couple of Greene King pubs north of Hitchin. However, a couple of miles away in the neighbouring settlement of Henlow is the renowned Engineers Arms - today serving a gorgeous porter from Glastonbury Brewery among six or seven interesting handpumps - while across the agricultural fields to the west is the Old Transporter Ale House near RAF Henlow airfield. Failing that, there is no shortage of good pubs in Hitchin itself.
