V Welling A 4th Sept Match Thread

Reading both teams twitterfeeds seems like a hard fought game where either side could have taken all 3 points  A point away from home however is always acceptable  I'll look forward to comments from supporters who made the trip.

Can someone tell me if I have missed a new ruling in Association Football. but are "time-outs" now a legitimate part of the game?

I think it was the Welling number 3 who went down "injured" about halfway through the second half ,and I have it on good authority from a reliable fellow Rebel that one of his team mates told him to "stay down so that we can have a drinks break", ( which really means a chance for their manager to talk tactic's about how the match is going.)

This "timeout/tactic update/drinks break" took several minutes. To me surely this is unsporting/ungentlemanly conduct ?

Then we had the situation where a Welling player was receiving treatment BEHIND the touchline, and the  game was held up by the referee until the player was deemed fit enough to continue.

No flippin' wonder matches kicking off at 3pm on a Saturday are now finishing at nearly 5 o'clock !

Wasn't it last week against Chippenham that the two teams were back on the pitch ready to start the second half, and we had to wait a couple more minutes for the referee to grace us with his presence ?

Then we had to wait another minute or so for his two mates the linesmen to appear from the tunnel !

For my sins, back in the mid 1980's to the early 1990's I had a season ticket at a big, famous (and very unpopular to many people ) team in the north-west of England.

In those days weekend matches always kicked off on a Saturday at 3pm.

I could leave my seat when the ref blew the final whistle, exit the ground with 40-50,000 other fans, walk 10 minutes to the coach park and still get on the coach in plenty of time to hear the "Sports Report" jingle and

football headlines on the radio at 5 o'clock !

And could you imagine a centre forward like Joe Jordan taking a couple of minutes on the pitch to seemingly get a replacement band to keep his hair bun nice and tidy?

Modern football, eh ?

P.S. It is true.

When you get to be a certain age you are extremely likely to turn into a grumpy old git !

TBH not a great game to watch with the long ball punt up field used at every opportunity.

We took an early lead when the ball rebounded off the Welling keepers body and fell to Aaron Kuhl in front of goal and he duly whacked the ball into the net.

Welling then had a glorious chance to equalize but somehow the player managed to put his shot just wide of the post.

The equalizer eventually came just before half time when a Welling player was allowed time and space to place a well hit shot just out of the reach of Jon North.

Welling took the lead when another long punted clearance up field found a Welling player who managed to beat an advancing Northy to the ball and put the home side ahead.

It looked like being Welling's day until we produced a barnstorming finish eventually getting the equalizer from a pin point cross (I think from Freddie Grant) onto Birdy's head for the equalizer.

I think the succinct and probably understated quote from Unders on twitter summed up our overall performance 'we have some improving to do'.

As there are now two threads to this game perhaps one of the tech people could merge the two together just to keep things nice and tidy ?

Not sure thats necessary  This one is clearly marked as the match thread  the other one is about reduced entry price to the ground if Slough is in the London area.

Adrian, the thread title is v Welling.

It's not a problem but just seems a bit unnecessary to have two Welling match threads.

I suppose it's down to the discretion of the ref rather than any ruling.

Reminds me of the Weston Super Mare game at home a few years back. We lost a few minutes from the end their goalkeeper decided to stay down.

No one had touched him. Obviously we got on his back. The full back standing near us just smiled and said game management.

At the end i shouted i hope you go down at the goalkeeper which proved to be the case in the end.

Thought overall a draw was probably a fair result to the game. Both sides had good chances to score and could have won the game, but nothing went in for either side hence the draw.

Thought the first half (apart from maybe 10 minutes) we were by far the worst team, without really giving up too much in the way of chances for them. We looked 2nd to the ball and off the pace. The 2nd half was almost an exact opposite of the 1st, especially after we were 2-1 down as they couldn't really get out of their half.

A few positives for me - Thought once again Ryan Bird was man of the match and thus far I am extremely happy to have been proven wrong on his defensive performances. Guy Hollis just does what he does best and I bet his arms were aching today after all the long throws. George Hunt and Joe Lawal also looked very good throughout the game. Goueth was a bit unlucky in the 2nd half not to score and got in some good positions as well.

A few negatives - though North should have done better with both goals. Being beaten at your near post from 25 yards and the decision to come out for the 2nd goal when he was never going to get the ball and Freddy Grant was with the forward don't scream great goal keeping to me. Couple that with the drop / knee from last week and the jury is out for me thus far. It was clear that Josh Jackman and Aaron Kuhl haven't played as they both looked fairly leggy, hopefully that will just be match fitness though. Once again I was concerned with Lee Togwell's performance. He got caught on the ball a few times, put short passes in (one of which almost resulted in a goal) and looked off the pace. My guess is he is carrying a knock because the last 2 weeks have been so un-Togwell like for me.

To sum up, I think it was a more positive game than the Cippenham on (chances created being the main positive). Hopefully we can keep improving and start to convert some of those chances into some goals to win some games as I think with a bit more luck and clinical finishing we could have 9 points out of 12 this season, just got to get there.

Personally I have no worries about Jon North and think he will prove to be our best pre-season signing.

Not sure about their first goal, I thought it was a very well placed shot, I was more concerned about the lack of a challenge on the player to stop him having a free shot at goal.

Agree Northy probably could have done better with Welling's second.

Once Toggs gets his match fitness levels up I have no doubt he will again be a vital cog in our midfield.

I think George Hunt is a skillful young lad who shows a lot of promise, my only concern is that he tends to flit in and out of games and sometimes get brushed off the ball too easily. A player with his ability should be demanding the ball and controlling the midfield. Perhaps that will come with more experience at this level of football.

I see what you mean about George Hunt RR. I do wonder though, once Kuhl and Togwell get match fit, will he have more freedom to do those things in the midfield?

I hope you are right and I will be more than happy to admit that (as with Ryan Bird) about North RR. Being unable to attend the first 2 games I had heard all about his quality, saving us in the first match and keeping the score down in the 2nd one, unfortunately, since then the goals we have let in haven't been im sure his best moments. Fingers crossed you are right and I'm looking forward to seeing the best of him?

Or you could say the vital 'Tog' in midfield ! ?
