FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round

New Salamis v Kensington & Ealing Borough

New Salamis's tie tomorrow evening is covered on the London Football Guide website:

New Salamis v Kensington & Ealing Borough @7.45pm - the hosts, who play at Haringey Borough, only entered the FA Cup for the first time last season and made it through two rounds before bowing out. Kensington & Ealing were only formed in 2012 and are making their debut in the competition. They play a level below New Salamis but play some good football and the two should provide an entertaining game. Tickets are £8 and will be available on the gate.

FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round

Broadfields United v Cribbs

Broadfields United's tie on Saturday is covered on the London Football Guide website:

Broadfields United v Cribbs @3.pm - this match stands out for me as it provides you with a very rare chance to watch Bristol club Cribbs play in London. I'm genuinely quite surprised the clubs find themselves in the same part of the draw with West Country teams usually kept apart from other regions to minimise travel but they must have been right on the boundary line.

I wonder whether GRS67 will make a 'cameo' appearance later, it was 0-0 at the interval however Hadley turned the screw shortly after the break and led on 55 minutes through Yemi Buraimoh, Shaz Anwar netted on 71 minutes and Billy Baird put the tie beyond doubt from the spot on 77 minutes to earn a Preliminary Round trip to Essex Senior League Saffron Walden Town who won 7-0 at Biggleswade United this afternoon.

A groundhoppper from another Forum was at Haywood Way this afternoon, a disappointing defeat:

FAC Extra Preliminary Round
Haywood Way
Aylesbury Vale Dynamos 0(0) Longlevens 1(0)
Admission: £6 Didn't see any paper Attendance: tbc

I was in the area test-driving a replacement car, so combined that with a visit to Haywood Way. A fully enclosed ground on the Northern edge of town; entry by turnstile, bar, tea kiosk and Heath-Robinson assembly that just about passes as a seated area. Standing cover, the width of the 6yd box at near end as you enter.
Both Step 5 (SSMP v HLP), the visitors were much better all round. Frankly the hosts were poor, ball retention and basic skills were a rarity for 60 minutes. They didn't threaten until 'levens had scored on 61 with a superb finish across the home keeper and into the top corner.
Only when they went behind, did the home side start to play; even then, they couldn't actually hit the target. The glos side actually had two more good chances but both were well saved.

You have to hand it to Leverstock Green for still being the first with their match report  despite the disappointing defeat at Essex Senior League Stanway Rovers:

A groundhopper from another Forum was at this one:

Despite our evening game at Enstone being postponed we decided to stick with going to Ardley Utd which for me is a long drive just to watch a single game.
Heavy rain in Ipswich this morning & plenty of rain on the journey although past Cambridge there was a lot less rain. Today was my dad’s 1st game of 2021. We passed Buckingham Athletic’s ground which I visited in April 1994 & drove into the car park for a brief look. We then paid 50p for 3 hours in the car park in Buckingham town centre. We then had a wander round the small town. Further rain including a brief shower. Close to Ardley’s ground there was a lot of traffic but a lot less after the game.
Emirates FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round
Ardley Utd 2 (74 & 87) Ashton & Backwell Utd 0
KO: 15:00 Att: 98 h/c Cost: £6 inc free 20 page programme & £3 for concessions.
Venue: The Playing Fields, Ardley Road, Ardley
We parked on the road outside of the ground which has a car park. Past this is the Ardley with Fewcott Village Hall & then a small playing field with a kids play area is passed before reaching the ground.
4 corner floodlight poles, fully railed with infill & hardstanding except in one corner. The side with the PF has a wooden see through fence & is narrow with just the path. Back towards the road are houses. Behind one goal is a grass area with another h/s path set back with trees behind the fence. Past the goal is a small atcost covered stand with 4 rows of metal terracing. In the corner is h/s area in front of the two storey brick building which houses the changing rooms. There is decent overhang. Scattered about are picnic tables/chairs. Other side is also quite narrow with conifer trees. There’s a covered stand with 4 rows of blue seats. Behind are fields. Behind the other goal is a grass area with views into back gardens of the houses.
Match: Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division (v) Western League Premier Division
Report: Right at the start came the rain & continued mid-way through the half. Mostly cloudy with some sun. Breezy at times. Mildish but not great for August. On 9 mins ARD had a free kick which was just off target. They started well but didn’t threaten much & gradually A&B came into the game. A&B shot just wide on 20 mins. A chance on 42 mins for ARD but the shot didn’t make a good connection with gk saving the effort. Shots 5-2.
H/t lasted under 14 mins. A couple of brief showers this half. ARD shot just over on 58 mins before a shot was deflected & the gk pushed over the bar. The A&B gk & defender messed up & fell over each other & the ARD player took his time & shot past the defenders for us to finally see a goal which didn’t really look like coming. For some reason the A&B players ran to the ref to protest which caused some pushing & shoving. There were a couple more occasions of this later in the game. It would be even harder now for A&B who didn’t look very good at all. The only other shot of the game was when the same ARD player lobbed the gk for his 2nd goal. Shots 7-2. The ref blew for f/t at 16:44.
Ardley Utd are away to Royal Wootton Bassett Town in the next round.
We stopped off at Eaton Plaice chip shop in Eaton Socon close to the football ground for a lovely sausage & nice chips for £3.35. I think this is the 2nd time I’ve stopped here. Around the Cambridge area & remainder of the journey home the roads were either damp or very wet.

A groundhopper from another Forum was at the so-called Hawthorns:

English Cup Extra Preliminary Round @ The Hawthorns :
Stanway Rovers 1 Leverstock Green 0.
Entry £7
Att 104.

The 1st half would be best described as pish. HT 0-0. Shots 0-0. Moments of interest 0-0.
The 2nd half was better, would've been some achievement not to be. Best effort was from a Stanway forward, a rasping drive from 25 yards that came back off the post. The goal came on 72 minutes and was farcical ; a routine high ball in was dropped by the keeper towards his own net allowing a simple nod home from about 2 feet.
Apart from the football I enjoyed my visit, the ground is a little gem : hemmed in but with plenty of cover on all 4 sides, handy today with some regular heavy showers. Reminded me quite a lot of Melksham's much missed Conigre ground. I don't often eat/drink at football but there was also a cracking tea bar, as well as the usual there were artisan sausage rolls (£2) and Lamb samosa (£1).
My first long distance train trip for quite some time, I'd forgotten the joy of forlornly standing at a bus stop waiting for a bus that doesn't show up. Decided post game to yomp back to Marks Tey station; Google suggested 58 minutes but I made it back in 49, not expecting a medal but the approval of Big Chris wouldn't go amiss.

Hitchin Road was awash with groundhoppers from another Forum on Sunday afternoon:

FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round
Baldock Town 1 Wembley 0
Admission: £7, online programme
Attendance: 214 (official)
After having the best of the opening proceedings, Baldock took the lead after 20 minutes when Tommy Reynolds intercepted a poor pass from Wembley keeper Raheem Belgrave and shot past him into the net. Wembley had their best chance of the first half in the 31st minute when they almost scored direct from a corner; Cameron Groom made the save in the Baldock goal, but looked like he may have gone behind the line in the process. The appeals of the Wembley players were dismissed and Baldock maintained their lead going into half-time.
Wembley made a much better start to the second half and almost equalised in the 47th minute when someone narrowly poked over from a corner. After a period of Wembley pressure, Baldock began to regain a foothold and this saw the match peter out as the two sides cancelled each other out. The best chances for both sides came from brief lapses in defensive concentration, but neither team was able to capitalise with another goal.
Honestly, this was a pretty poor match in all, especially compared to the entertainment and general quality of yesterday's contest at Wellingborough (the pace and intensity of general play was much higher in that game than this one). Based on this match, I'd be very surprised to see Baldock give Grays any trouble in the next round.
Arlesey Town's ground is a good one, with cover on three sides of the ground. The main stand is attached to the clubhouse and provides a few rows of seating, but the views aren't the best. Directly across from this on the far side is a long stand contain a mix of covered seating and terracing. Behind the far goal is a steep uncovered terrace with two rails to lean on, as well as a smaller covered stand which seems to be currently being used as a storage area. The fencing that encloses the ground has seen better days, however, as it is falling apart in several places due to how overgrown a lot of the surrounding greenery is.
The bacon cheeseburger was great for £3.50, but the chips were poor as they were very much overdone. The portion size was good though, much better than I'd have expected for £1.50.

FA Cup Ex Prelim Round
Baldock 1 - 0 Wembley (HT 1 - 0)
Spartan SM Premier v Combined Co North (both Step 5)
New Lamb Meadow (Arlesey Town)
Admission £7/4
Attendance 214
No programmme
Tea £1

Also here, although the deluge of rain at 2pm, meant I was still checking if the match was on at 2.30.... Arlesey's ground now has building works in their car park, which means it has half the previous capacity.
Baldock played better in the first half, Wembley stepped it up in the second but didn't managed to score. The Wembley number 5 was injured quite early on with blood streaming down his face, he changed shirts to number 19, but wasn't allowed back on to play until he'd also changed his shorts, which also had blood on them. Cue the hunt for spare shorts, meaning he changed into a worn pair covered in grass stains, so the assistant referee wasn't convinced he HAD changed shorts, meaning the spectators in the stand behind the dugouts all politely advised the assistant referee of his error.
I spent the second half chatting with another local groundhopper, a nice afternoon spent in the blustery sunshine.
