An analogy

As Slough news is a bit thin currently, I thought I'd share this Spurs article on our forum, as I know there are quite a few Slough fans who follow Tottenham, including our beloved joint manager Unders.

Ex Roma manager Paulo Fonseca is now being mentioned for the Tottenham managers job. It seems this has upset many a Tottenham supporter, as Jose Mourinho replaced him at Roma!

On the surface it looks a daft appointment but reading into it, Fonseca likes his teams to play an attacking brand of football, built with a solid central defence, is good at working on limited budgets, and is open to players playing out of their normal positions and keen to work with younger players and also likes to have the sprinkling of older experienced players in the team.

He was sacked from Roma because the club is now under new ownership who wanted a bigger profile manager at the helm hence Jose Mourinho. Fonseca's managerial record is a mixed bag but has been good in terms of European football.

Also Paulo Fonseca was hampered by Covid 19 and injuries last season so results were bound to suffer, so he might not be quite the mug some fans are assuming.

The Spurs managerial appointment has been farcically handled so far but this analogy cheered me up slightly  in that the reviewer of this article on Tottenham's merry go around/search for a manager likened Paulo Fonseca appointment at Spurs, as to favourably comparing him to a Caesar's salad -disappointing if you were expecting a cheeseburger but tasty in it's own way and [dressing aside]probably better for you in the long run !   ha ha !

We will have to await and see if he turns out to be another limp lettuce in the latterly tradition of flop managers to grace the bench in Tottenham's dugout ie Christian Gross, Andreas Villa Boas, Juan Ramos etc  or whether he can be the next Bill Nicholson, Keith Burkinshaw, Harry Redknapp or Mauricio Pochettino.

That will really raise Bakes and Unders profile enormously. It covers all their attributes except for their excellent man management and quite often, their successful match management!

Whoever takes over has a lot of work to do getting rid of a lot of the dead wood and finding their replacements.

Funny enough, SG, I was thinking that as I wrote it !

Couldn't agree more, the Spurs squad needs a complete overhaul, something the Slough squad doesn't need thankfully.

The appointment of a Fabio Paratici as Director of Football gets Daniel Levy off the hook if the signings don't work out and someone he can use as the scapegoat to blame in the future but I'm hoping this Italian knows what he is doing, with the possible recruitment of Paulo Fonseca and the direction the club go with new signings.

God, it's desperate having to talk about Tottenham than Slough ! ha ha ha !

Mods, can this be renamed the "Everything Spurs" thread please

If I mention Stan Bowles, Rodney Marsh, Don Givens, Phil Parkes, Les Ferdinand, Ray Wilkins, Dave Clement, Kevin Gallen, Gerry Francis, does that help? ! ?

You missed out Adel Taarabt but good effort

Just to add to the Spurs theme, thank goodness that Christian Eriksen seems to be OK tonight. A fine player.

No I think I’m a bit old school and would want total control over everything (new signings etc).

Obviously I mean 50% control alongside Mr Baker!

I thought Bakes was the Director Of Football out of you two ! ?

But Tottenham Hotspur now have a Managing Director of Football!

He might find that a manager comes in useful before the season starts :-

"Tottenham Hotspur's managerial search took another twist on Thursday after the club broke off talks with Paulo Fonseca.

The Portuguese, 48, was set to replace Jose Mourinho after Spurs' new Managing Director of Football Fabio Paratici named him as his first choice.

But the former Roma manager, who met Paratici this week in Italy, will no longer be joining the club. It is thought to be linked to Gennaro Gattuso's unexpected Fiorentina exit. Former Milan and Napoli manager Gattuso, 43, left the Italian side on Thursday after just 23 days in the role.

Fonseca is understood to be stunned by the developments, with negotiations reportedly so far advanced that discussions had taken place about potential signings. He was expecting to be confirmed in the post over the coming days.

Earlier in June, Spurs had also been in advanced talks with former Inter Milan and Chelsea boss Antonio Conte, while also trying to persuade their former manager Mauricio Pochettino to leave his role at Paris St-Germain."

GENNARO GATTUSO CREDENTIALS

BUSINESS EXPERIENCE

In January 2010, Gennaro Gattuso opened a fish shop in his home town of Corigliano Calabro.

FOOTBALL MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE

Seven clubs in 8 years 3 months 20 days.

Maximum games as manager of a club : Pisa 86.

FIORENTINA

On 25 May 2021, Fiorentina announced the appointment of Gennaro Gattuso as their new head coach, effective from 1 July. However, on 17 June, just two weeks before the start of his contract, Gattuso and Fiorentina mutually rescinded the agreement due to a dispute between the two parties regarding player investment and the involvement of Gattuso's agent, Jorge Mendes.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR EXPERIENCE

On 15 February 2011, during Milan's Champions League game against Tottenham Hotspur, Gattuso pushed Tottenham coach Joe Jordan away by the throat during an incident on the sideline. Jordan was seen outside his allowed technical area exchanging words with Gattuso, in relation to the relatively physical game that had been played. After the game, after Gattuso had shaken hands with the Tottenham players, video footage showed him confronting Jordan and head-butting him after another exchange of words, before being restrained by both teammates and opponents. "I lost control. There is no excuse for what I did. I take my responsibilities for that", said the 33-year-old Gattuso, but he also said that Jordan had provoked him throughout the game but refused to say what his comments were. Newspapers, however, reported Joe Jordan had been using racist, offensive calls for much of the game by calling Gattuso a "[****!!****]ing Italian bastard" from the sidelines. The following day, it was announced that UEFA was looking at additional sanctions or punishment for Gattuso's actions against Jordan the previous day and that he had been charged with "gross unsporting conduct." Gattuso was then suspended for five
Champions League matches – one for yellow card accumulation, the other four for the incident with Jordan.
The Tottenham coach also received a touchline ban by UEFA for his involvement in the exchange.

HEALTH

Gennaro Gattuso suffers from an auto-immune disease named oculoar myasthenia. He opened up about his illness in late 2020.
