Club Statement

Sir Rebel1965

EFL 'elite clubs' have now been told that they've now got to have mandatory testing in place.

With infection rates and deaths growing by the day why are NL 'elite clubs' still allowed to travel around the country playing games without any mandatory testing being required?

Along with the fact that clubs still don't know if they're going to receive any funding to pay their players for the next 3 months.

It is worthwhile reading the Ollie Bayliss Twitter, it would appear there is funding available for January to March, but because of all the disputes about the last distribution, appointment of a review panel, their recommendations, and the resignation of Mike Tattersall the NL CEO, it has been delayed.

But considering the Club Statement, would or should the Club accept the offer of further funds from the National League at this time?

Having just read the club statement I feel that our club is doing the right thing. The way this pandemic is going, I think this football season[20/21] should be written off at our level. Or our results could be carried over to next season for a shortened season thus keeping promotion clubs happy.

Most clubs could not continue the season without funding.

Refusing the funding and in effect refusing to play would have to be done en mass with other clubs otherwise I'd say it's pretty nailed on expulsion and relegation would follow.

The Club clearly feels very strongly about what the ‘morally right’ thing to do is, and wants to ‘put the safety of its players & staff above all other things’, and in addition ‘our players have also expressed concerns both for themselves & their families’.

And this coincides with the Club not playing a league match since 9th December & playing their next league match on 16th January at the earliest.

Maybe under these circumstances, and with these feelings at the Club, they should consider postponing all upcoming matches on the basis of suspected COVID-19, furlough all the players, and reject any offer of National League funding.

I am just not sure you can be outspoken about what you think is morally right, and then accept funds to do what you don’t consider to be morally right.

Refusing to play a game for anything that is not deemed acceptable is according to National league rules a fine of anywhere between 2.5k and 10k per match...  refusing to play if the competition continues could put the club out of business.

Yes however we have not abused the system, and as a club we will not lie, we have made our position clear to the league, we have had 2 instances with possible cases one of which would not have affected us playing as the player in general had not been around others and would have just missed game himself (This was Chippenham away but was irrelevant as they had positive cases anyway so was postponed for them) and the other (again Chippenham away which had to be postponed due to a partner testing positive and the person being too close to everyone)

On Xmas day we had two suspected cases one ended up being negative and the other had a positive test which put us in isolation. All genuine.

It is a level playing surface for all the clubs in National League North and South now that the whole of England is in national lockdown. Local infection rates vary from club to club but clubs have to play away matches as well and not many players live in the town of the team that they play for these days.

The Club Statement was extremely well worded. I don't think any of the other clubs could disagree with any of the issues raised but they might go along with "playing matches under duress" rather than rebel if the National League does not suspend the season.

Note these excerpts from the Maidstone United Chief Executive's Bulletin on Tuesday :-

"As it stands, the first team will continue to train and play during this lockdown, as we did during October’s. By the time we play Hungerford on Saturday, we’ll have only played two games in forty-eight days. One of the postponements in that time was for floodlights but the rest have been due to coronavirus. Our team have isolated on two occasions and three of our opponents were isolating at the time we should have played them.

Can we prevent coronavirus cases in the future? Sadly not. With the best will in the world it’s not just the 30 or so within our first team set-up. Add in other halves, family, other work colleagues etc and we’re looking at 100+ ways of Covid coming into our set-up.

But through the rapid testing programme and minimal indoor contact time, we’re hoping to have a better handle on the virus and lessen its impact across our playing and management staff.

I know of some other clubs who’ve been rapid testing and we’re more than happy to share our findings if it would help others to implement a similar scheme, which will hopefully see the season completed and not compromised.

One of the good things to come from this is the close co-operation between clubs. We may be rivals on the pitch but are in the same boat when it comes to weathering the Coronavirus storm.

Funding is a major cause for concern. The National Lottery package finished in December and there is nothing in place as yet for this month and beyond.

Your continued support of the streaming service will be vital to helping us get through the next few months, so I hope I can count on you for that."

For anybody who didn't catch it, the live interview I saw went on for a good 5 minutes (even though I missed the beginning.)

I just put my TV on and couldn't believe it when I saw that Sky were talking live  to Craig about  Slough Town.

I thought Craig came across very well.

I don't know if Sky have repeated this interview since it went out live.

That's a shame I would have liked to have listened to what Craig had to say.

Out of the NL/NLN/NLS the are 11 games on and 14 off.

Come on NL/FA work it out, it is not safe any more - the blood will be on your hands!

And that's without mandatory testing in place.

If mandatory testing was in place there would hardly be a game being played in non league.
