Matt Lench

So Lenchy has gone .            Again.

To Wealdstone.         Again.

These are  just the thoughts of this one supporter, who has no idea what goes on behind the scenes at the club obviously.

Lenchy has been one of my favourite players at the club for the past few years, and one can never begrudge a player moving on to play at a higher grade of football.

Players moving on has always happened and always will.

I'm just reminded of that sketch in the TV show "The Office", when Ricky Gervais announces to his staff that there will have to be cutbacks made at the company, and that lots of them will be made redundant.

"It's not all bad news !"  he says.  " I've been promoted ! "

So Lenchy has gone on to higher things, but there are so many negatives for the rest of us.

The timing of this is awful.

We have an already small squad, which has been reduced in size even more due to injuries

We have a busy ( Covid permitting ) Xmas time schedule coming up.

Government funding for the club runs out at the end of this month, and who knows what will happen then.

Neil  understandably has had to take a break from football.

If Lenchy had gone to say Aldershot, or Sutton, or even Maidenhead it would have felt "easier" to accept for this supporter than Wealdstone.

It felt as though he couldn't wait to get away from them last time he was there but like I say what do I know ?

It does feel like Wealdstone have come  "poaching" for one of our best players and taken advantage of our situation, but that's what happens  I know.

I am sure that Jon and Neil will have the situation in hand, but to lose one of my favourite players now is not the Christmas present this fan wanted.

I'm disappointed with Matt Lench leaving and especially the timing of it but when a another club makes an approach offering a higher level of football and obviously a lot more money he's only doing what 99.99% of other players would do in this situation.

The fact that he's going back to Wealdstone after his disastrous last visit is a pointless comparison because it's a different set up with a new manager and different players.

Looking at the Wealdstone supporters reaction thus far they seem totally underwhelmed and given that they are a ruthless bunch he has his work cut out proving them wrong.

Hopefully this time he'll get a fair crack of the whip and enough game time to warrant travelling up and down the country.

After all said and done I wish Lenchy the best of luck in his new venture.

Good luck to him, no harm in taking the step up and I'm sure if things don't work out he would be welcomed back (again!). My little lad is devastated he's moved on

Will be interesting to see who/if we can replace him in the middle of midfield. I think Hodges could well do a great job in that role of linking the midfield to the forward line, similarly Wazza if McKnight features on the right hand side of midfield.

His first chance to prove himself this time round may well come on Boxing Day when Wealdstone are away to Maidenhead.

Unless there's an injury problem at Wealdstone I doubt if he'll start the game, we'll have to wait and see on that one.

Besides I'm sure he'll be given time to settle in and not judged too harshly in his first game at a new club.

From my perspective, he is a big loss but Matt Lench deserves to play higher, as in my mind he is our best player and you can see why a higher up club would look to sign him. Good luck to him. We're be in bigger trouble, if a couple of others choose to leave as well. Lenchy leaving, we should be able to cope with.

Slough on the other hand are going to have to see some of our other midfielders step up to the plate. Personally I wouldn't look for a like for like replacement for Matt Lench, I would use his freed up wages to purchase a half decent forward, when Slough gets back to some normality from Coronavirus.

I think we have cover for Matt and with our financial concerns it’s likely we’ll save his wages.

Depends what direction in the table Slough head. If we can put a run of results together with our squad minus Matt Lench and move up the table,I agree with you Glen STFC but if we end up losing a lot more games and are sucked into a relegation/lower table battle, then we are bound to need reinforcements in our team.

No he was not on contract, same as most people this season, we were/are not going to put the club in a position where we were over committed with all the uncertainty of coronavirus, if we lost a player then to be honest so be it.

We will probably never get another season like this, and we have to negotiate our way through it as best we can.

Agreed, hence my decision this week to be honest, I was not going to wait around for the National league to tell me that the environment that we are put in weekly I s now putting us and our families at risk because of the amount of contacts (especially if anyone else is vulnerable in the family as is the case for me) due to the huge increase in infections.

At the end of the day the league couldn’t care less as long as they get the season finished as quick as they can, I value my Dads life over football, and unless the league pay for testing I don’t know how they can expect us to continue in the current climate.

Already this Boxing Day in our league alone we have 5 out of 10 off because of it, yes people will say it will hardly affect any of our lads, what if it is passed on to some of our volunteers, family members etc?

When the infections first started to get serious in March, all football was stopped, and at that point we expected the season to be null and void, and we were all fine with this, made no noise at all, and in all honesty were just waiting for a decision, however the National League themselves wanted to align with EFL, and in doing that it took ages to make a decision, and by which time that level of football was agreed to go back to complete the seasons via play offs due to the amount of games already played, we were in a position as a country where we were coming out of restrictions and had very few cases, however at a meeting we were told that in effect we could not afford testing and therefore would be cancelled at step 2, that was at the point we all said hang on a minute, we can source testing cheaper to cope with paying for it for a maximum of 3/4 weeks, as we had put so much into the season already, and wanted to get it done, and they were using this elite tag which we argued applied to us by government definition, same way it did for teams in levels below also (does not make us an elite club).

The whole thing with testing was to do it for a whole season the National League knew clubs would not be able to afford to do it, and that is why IMO the National League dropped it as a requirement, as they knew there was no way the season would get started otherwise (along with the funding needed to just get by)  we all went along with it, as again cases were so low and we just wanted to play football, however the facts are cases now are similar levels to the peak in April, and at that point no level of football was playing, as even in the premier league they do not have a magic wand despite the money involved, because as soon as players return home to their families they are again mixing with their kids who have been at schools etc, however the Premier League want to talk about these amazing bubbles, when the reality is they are sweeping it under the carpet to continue playing due to the millions of pounds available.

Either way I would love to be back soon, and back involved at football, however for me the country needs to be in a better place, as whilst I live and breathe football, life is more important.

If positive cases and deaths keep rising at the rate they currently are imo the Government will be forced step in and insist on mandatory testing for all non league clubs before they are allowed to play a game and then of course the s**t will hit the fan on who pays for it.

As far as I know they still haven't sorted out who's paying and how the Jan/Feb/March funding will be paid.
