Accountant's World Cup Call

Recommended Posts

A Sunday league footballer has been called up to play in the World Cup.

In a real Roy of the Rovers tale, Lawrence Harvey will turn out for the Turks and Caicos Islands in two qualifying games next month.

The 30-year-old accountant, who usually plies his trade in the Cambridge Senior League Premier Division, will instead be taking on Haiti over two legs in Miami.

Harvey, of Burwell, Cambridgeshire, qualifies to play for the Caribbean islands - a British colony - because he lived and worked there for a couple of years.

And while Turks and Caicos may be ranked 203 in the Fifa rankings - or the second worst team in the world if you prefer - he is over the moon about his call-up.

"It will be a truly amazing experience, regardless of what happens - not many people get the chance to play in a World Cup qualifier," he said.

Harvey, who plays at central half for Alcia Athletic, is under no illusions about the task facing his adopted nation.

"Football has only been played on the island for seven years and it hasn't developed beyond the massive ex-pat community," he explained.

Hopefull they'll do better than American Samoa

The islands' only other foray into the World Cup resulted in a 14-0 aggregate loss to St Kitts and Nevis four years ago - and Haiti are currently ranked 107 places above Turks and Caicos.

The heaviest defeat in World Cup history was the 31-0 beating Australia dished out to American Samoa in 2001.

"They are ranked one place above us, " Harvey groaned. "I hope we don't enter the record books for the wrong reasons!"
