Lewis Putman amongst the goals!

A real winter warmer of a match, in spite of a card happy, fussy ref. No team sheets available but Ashley Harrack who greatly impressed on his last game at the Boundary didn't feature, nor did 4 or 5 Jets regulars.

NGU got an early goal to which Puts and Sweeney replied on 31 and 34 and the former nearly made it 3-1 but for a goaline clearance. The pick of the goals came from the visitors before the break, a sweetly struck volley from a long cross field pass.

Jets went ahead midway through the second half, Stead with a surging run and finish, but Greenford were awarded a soft pen with 8 to go from a corner (by the lino, who saw something off the ball which I didn't, wasn't much argument from the home side though). It was duly converted to end the scoring, but Jets hit the bar from a cross shot in injury time and NGU had chances of their own.

Cracking entertainment, twice I've been impressed with the side from up the A40, can't understand why they are where they are in the table.

Saturday 12 December

Division Two

Buckingham United v Pitstone & Ivinghoe

This could turn out to be a thriller couldn't it, Buckingham United appear to be a better side under John Walton than they were under Sean Devine:

A groundhopper from another Forum was at this anticipated thriller:

Spartan South Midlands League Division 2
Buckingham United 2 Pitstone & Ivinghoe 3

Official attendance 78
Admission free, no programme (sadly United have stopped issuing paper progs), badge £3, no refreshments as clubhouse closed for the season

Having originally bought a ticket for the return of the Isthmian (Bognor’s longest League road trip this campaign, at Brightlingsea Regent) only for that to be nixed by the Trident Leagues’ further delay to the re-start, I plumped for one of only three SSML grounds I had to tick off.

Buckingham United were founded nine years ago, and play on public land at the Lace Hill Academy, not far from the A413 London Road on the south side of town. Their fully railed pitch is set a small distance from the leisure centre (apparently eight yards too far to allow a players’ tunnel from the centre) and is on a raised plateau with no spectator facilities -I hate rain, hence putting this tick back in the box on a couple of inclement days earier this season. There’s a hillock on the northern flank where I stood to get the best view of proceedings and also the pictureseque view, complete with barn between the far goal and northwest corner, where the pitch slopes after the goal line - corners from here are taken with the player having to move downwards to kick the ball! Three of United’s young committee men kept me company during the second half, one having walked five minutes home at half time to collect the badge I’d ordered earlier.

Visitors Pitstone & Ivinghoe arrived with a 100% league record, having won their four previous league games which were all away from home while they improved their clubhouse and installed floodlights. I’ll throw caution to the wind and say P&I managed to extend their record due to an overly officious ref who indirectly influenced the outcome and who, as an aside, could have taken many more names than he did. This was a real blood and thunder match, with no quarter given, plenty of bumping and booring and ‘nearly late’ tackles, and lots of verbals, though it should be said there was also no little skill from both sides on a soft pitch.

It was typical of proceedings that the first three goals came from dead ball situations. United scored first when a penalty for handball saw Matt Ginger’s 28th minute down the middle daisy cutter hit the outstretched leg of the keeper and rocket into the roof of the net. The first booking of the game (somehow as late as the 36th minute) resulted in a subime equaliser with Albie Hall arrowing a 22 yard direct free kick over the wall and into the near top corner. A blatant trip in the box saw Ginger score his second penalty in the 59th, thumping it into the same corner Hall’s kick had nestled. Then it got interesting.

In the 71st minute, with a United attack halfway in their opponents’ half, a home player was scythed down in ‘Chelsea v Leeds’ style. With the fouled player prone on the pitch, the referee didn’t think a foul had been committed and waved play on, with a breakaway finishing in a far post cross tipped onto the bar by the keeper and the rebound headed in by Charlie Wells (I think). United were incandescant with rage, to the point centre forward Harry Dalton got a straight red for remonstrating.

At the end a score of 2-2 in terms of both goals and sendings off would have been about right, but P&I kept up their 100% record when sub Jack Downes hit a shot low and across the home custodian into the far corner from ten yards out in the 90th minute. Having played 30 seconds’ stoppage time after a first half where he’d been the cause of at least three lost minutes himself, the ref elected to play a more correct four minutes at the end during which United hit the post twice. Definitely not boring, this one!

PREMIER DIVISION

2-1 Leighton Town v Newport Pagnell Town (Collier [2]) / (Stronge) Attendance: 314

A groundhopper from another Forum was at Bell Close:

Leighton Town 2 Newport Pagnell Town 1
Spartan South Mids Prem. Att; 314
Admission £6 programme online only: https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/files.pitchero.com%2Fclubs%2F3144%2FtimwK13FSEk09MeFrhrg_Leighton+v+Newport+Pagnell.pdf

A weird game this and one that the visitors will wonder how they didn’t win. They had a huge amount of possession in the first half but failed to make it count, too many times good approach play was let down by the final ball. They were made to pay on 25 minutes when their defence failed to clear and a loose ball was driven hard and low beyond the keeper. However a few minutes later a home player was given a straight red for a foul which looked a little harsh from my position. However Leighton absorbed everything that came their way, bar one occasion when the home keeper made a great save from close range. Other than that their final shot / pass were wayward. With about 20 to go Leighton doubled their lead when a long ball was chased by a forward who took advantage of indecision between a defender and keeper and prodded the ball home. The visitors pulled one back in stoppage time following a scramble the ball was driven in low. However their efforts were summed up a minute or two later with a shot that cleared the ground.
Bell Close I found to be a decent set up. There is a main stand down one side which is raised with uncovered standing alongside it. The near side end is also raised and has a section of terracing whilst the far end has a decent cover on it. The other side is flat uncovered standing and one half of it was out of bounds today. Much of the ground, standing and seating was marked as out of bounds with tape to allow for Covid compliance although it was clear not everyone was compliant. The crowd of 314 includes club officials and was excellent in number although the behaviour of some left a bit to be desired. There was a large group of teenagers who looked the sort to be mourning the demise of the Jeremy Kyle Show who seemed to rate themselves as a bit tasty although I imagine a gust of wind would sort them all out. In addition when the second goal went in a few beer glasses with drink in them went on the pitch which was totally unnecessary. A real shame as the ground is decent and it was not a bad game, and the home officials seem a decent bunch. However if I was local I would not hurry back.

A groundhopper from another Forum was at the Boundary Stadium, it sounds like he didn't appreciate getting his shoes a bit muddy going in:

Oxhey Jets 3-3 North Greenford United, Boundary Stadium, Spartan South Midlands
Entry £4 (codgers rate) Att 83 (about half supporting the visitors
)

No programmes / team sheets / team lists / tannoy announcements of the teams. No food / drink at all as the local council will not permit it. They are doing a bit of work at the entrance to the ground so a bit “dirty” going in.
Entertaining game, albeit not the highest of quality but conversely some very well taken goals. Overall a fair result. Clearly a match where both sets of players and supporters were frustrated by the official in the middle, he certainly was inconsistent but of course we need officials to be able to play the matches.
Guess most on here will have been to ground. 2 small seated area on entrance side and a few seats tucked away in a corner behind goal. Best view from the raised steps as you entered the ground.

What happened to Codicote on Saturday, from what I can gather they were leading 2-0 just after the break with goals from Courage Chavhundra and Ray Antcliff and looking comfortable however became complacent and allowed MK Gallacticos back into the game, the winning goal came just as the Referee was putting the final whistle to his lips.

I wasn't able to post these links prior to the game but, firstly, an interesting Sports Shots interview with Old Bradwell United long serving supremo David Keene who describes the great set up the Club have at Abbey Road. Secondly, an equally interesting interview with new Mursley United boss Mitch Toyer who took the reins of the First team this season having been Development team Manager previously:

PREMIER DIVISION

3-3 Eynesbury Rovers v Dunstable Town (Bradbury, Moss, Andrews) / (Stapleton [3] [1 pen]) Attendance: 143

Eynesbury Rovers version of events:

Saturday 12th December 2020
Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division
EYNESBURY ROVERS 3 DUNSTABLE TOWN 3
Before today's match Eynesbury held a minutes silence as a mark of respect to the tragic loss of two young lives lost in a house fire less than a mile from the club's Hall Road home.
On the field Eynesbury Rovers’ Kye Andrews scored a 90th minute equaliser to snatch a point and maintain their position at the top of the league. Rovers had beaten Dunstable 6-1 away back in October but the Bedfordshire side looked a much better outfit than the one that played that evening. Striker Chris Stapleton scored a hat-trick for the visitors and could have scored four but he missed a penalty, blasting the ball over the top.
Dunstable took the lead with their first attack when a through ball from the halfway line by Leo Pedro put Stapleton in on goal and he placed his shot beyond the reach of Shay Griffiths.
However, two goals in three minutes turned the game in Eynesbury’s favour. From a 31st minute corner by Cameron Hyde the ball was headed out as far as Joe Bradbury (pictured) who slipped as he placed the ball into the net.
Just two minutes later Jordan Brown played a ball from the halfway line for Charlie Moss to run on to down the inside right channel. His first shot was parried by Dan Gould but Moss latched on to the loose ball to score from a tight angle to put Rovers 2-1 ahead.
In the second half Rovers looked less effective than they did in the first and Dunstable looked dangerous on the counter attack. Their breakthrough came in the 75th minute when a ball into the penalty area was handled by Jack Uttridge in his attempt to bring it under control. Chris Stapleton took the spot kick and fired it home to draw the visitor’s level.
Eight minutes later Jack Uttridge gave away another penalty as he brought down an attacker in the box. However, this time Stapleton blasted his kick over the top. The striker did get his hat-trick though with just four minutes remaining when he struck a tremendous half volley past Shay Griffiths to give Dunstable a 3-2 advantage.
It was not the winner though as Eynesbury equalised in the 90th minute as Kye Andrews poked the ball home from close range much to the relief of the Rovers’ supporters.
The point gained, coupled with Colney Heath’s surprise defeat at Leverstock Green, means that Eynesbury remain top on goal difference from Biggleswade United who moved into second spot with a 7-2 win at Aylesbury. Next up is another home fixture when Leighton Town visit Hall Road on Tuesday 15th December.
