We had 6 trialists at Bracknell and only 1 has shown enough to still be with us. There may well have been more at training sessions too. I was hoping (although there’s still time) another forward option would have been on show.

Still time but I think another forward is certainly an option I'd like to see.

I never saw the game but from Jon's interview and fans comments on here about Boreham Woods physical powerhouse team, I was wondering why he and Bakes chose a 4-5-1 formation for the duration of the game?  From the games I watched last season, I found that formation rather hit and miss, in terms of what Slough achieve by playing it, with the sole striker often getting isolated and/or having to go out wide searching to get the ball.

I wasn't expecting Slough to match Boreham Wood last night [we know they are a handful] but I was slightly bemused, that given it was only a friendly and with the quality and strength of the opposition, that we didn't chose two strikers up front. For me it would have been Dan Roberts and Ryan Bird first half, with Paul Hodges and Ben Harris the full second half. At the back I would have plumped for Guy Hollis and Sam Togs as a centre back pairing first half, with Ryan replacing Sam for the second half.

I don't expect that we would have won with my selection but I do think we would have given them a harder game.

As the managers would say you learn more from your defeats.

Wood as said were strong powerful and fast.

Yes, you learn how to lose !

Playing devil's advocate here, SD, so don't get on your high horse. I do appreciate that teams can learn from defeats but with the current Slough squad having three friendlies under their belt, I thought they may have offered greater resistance than a 1-7 scoreline suggests. As Jon said 'we won't be playing a team like Boreham Wood every week in the Conference South', which I agree with him on but no one can say Slough are in their stride yet, given these matches so far.

Friendlies are never a great gauge for measuring how far a team has progressed but I have to say I'm concerned with the quality of player we are getting in, as it's looking like we are really hard up for money.  I'm glad we are going with some young, potentially good players but I'm surprised we haven't attracted a seasoned player for our left back slot. I have nothing against the Louis Lomas signing, especially with his versatility but I think we have missed out on three experienced left backs, right under our noses, which is looking ominously down to the club's finances this season, rather than Bakes and Unders lack of vision. I hope I'm wrong but that is how it seems to me.

As far as I'm aware Ryan Bird is no longer down as a striker for us.

I know but where's the harm in playing him there on the odd occasion?

Given his size, experience and Boreham Wood's big players, I would have thought, 45 minutes up front he could cope with.

What is weird with Ryan, is he copes easily with strong tackles and making challenges in defence, yet when he goes upfront now,he looks like a rabbit in the headlights!

I accept Ryan doesn't want to play as a striker and I can see why the managers will use him sparingly[if at all] there but for a one off game against such a strong, powerful team as BW, I thought it would be the right way to go, as it's not like we are blessed for strikers and I liked the idea of having some muscle alongside our lighter forwards,to get in amongst the Woods defenders. It also gives a chance to see Paul Hodge alongside Ben Harris, and gives Ryan a full 90 minutes in two positions.

Anyway,we didn't do that,so it's all pie in the sky. We got hammered and went down with a whimper, by the sounds of it.

Hello 3Spirit why would I get on my high horse we played a strong side yes some of the goals were disappointing to give away and to many but we have not had a game for a couple of weeks and as Jon said 1st time some of the players have played 90 minutes everything has to be taken in context onwards and upwards.

Hi SD, I agree we must not get carried away with this loss. These friendlies never matter in the big scheme of things but this is a football forum and all of us like passing comments on our favoured team, so not all of us can share the same point of view on such things.

The high horse remark was just so you didn't get the wrong end of the stick, when I said defeats are 'learning how to lose'.

To me losing 1-7 to any team is a hammering in my book. You can make excuses but you can't really dress it up as anything other than that.

Oct 2014

Slough Town 1

Redditch United 7

That's when Redditch were spending the money on good players.

Like a lot of clubs without the support and success to match their spending it didn't last long before they came back down to earth.

Pre-season games don't matter as far as there are no points in involved but they do matter in preparation for the season.

The important point after any heavy defeat is how the team reacts in the next game.
