FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round

Park View 1 Hashtag United 2

Quite a few anoraks from another Forum seemed to be at this tie last Wednesday:

I was at Park View 1 Hashtag United 2 (H/T 1-1) which was not my first visit to the New River athletics stadium, having been there for a SSML Challenge Trophy game against Potton United nearly two years ago, which at that time was the biggest soccer match to have been played at the venue. Last night's match was bigger still, and created a good trick quiz question "Name the two grounds in White Hart Lane that have staged FA Cup ties" to which most people would give the partially incorrect answer "the grounds of Haringey Borough and Tottenham Hotspur" (Tottenham Hotspur, of course, actually play on the High Road)

Unlike the Potton game, entry was through a brick building in the south-west corner, where gate money was taken and programmes sold. Much to my surprise though, no attempt was made to take the names or contact details of the spectators. I have not yet seen an attendance figure, but it must have been at least 300, with nearly everyone watching from the large cantilever stand that was built in the early-mid 1980's. I could not see anyone else who looked like a groundhopper, with everyone supporting one of the two clubs. Despite the home club having been founded by Ghanians, and all but one of their players being black, many of their fans were white. Both teams 'took the knee' immediately before the kick-off in recognition of the 'Black Lives Matter' campaign.

Hashtag United were deserved winners, being the better side, particularly in the second half. One thing I was not happy about was that when two goals were scored at the east end, the ball went straight through the netting which had not been properly secured, and the referee did not bother to tell anyone to rectify this. I had to make sure that I saw the game re-start before writing down the details of the goals.

One thing worth mentioning about the venue is that there is a second pitch which has three steps of terracing and a railing along one side, which I think may have been used for games in the lower divisions of the Middlesex County League. It is sufficiently separate from the main stadium, and certainly not visible from it, to count as a separate ground.

The venue is around 45 minutes walk from my home, and not wanting to have to wear a face covering on the buses, I did not being my Freedom Pass with me. The walk took me past a café with a 'New Salamis FC' sign over the front, this being the club's HQ (typing the club's name into Google will bring up a photo of the café) and I believe they are ground-sharing at Haringey Borough this season after having spent several years at venues further away.

Just seen who the Referee was.

Oh dear!

A number of anoraks from another Forum were unsurprisingly at this one, Woodford Town disappointingly didn't 'issue', to use an anorak term, and could have made a killing if they had charged £2.00, they fobbed fans off saying a programme could be found on-line but I don't believe one existed:

Woodford Town 3 London Colney 1
FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round
Admission: £5
Attendance: 247
at Harlow Town

The hosts reduced to 10 men deservedly came back from a goal down playing some fine football. I'm not sure about the cacophony of three drums being beat for the whole match but it's good to see clubs getting support. The red card was probably on the harsh side but the ref did well to keep a lid on mounting emotions towards the end which slightly spilled over after the full time whistle before order was restored.

A bumper crowd, I was slightly surprised at the proximity of fans next to each other in the seats. The covered section option was out of bounds and used for subs.

Track and trace through the Eve Pass App also favoured by Kings Langley on Saturday though cash was the means of payment at the turnstile.

A worthwhile evening out, as it felt normal being picked up on an evening at Stanmore by my regular driving travelling pal who has succumbed to Step 5 and 6 in lieu of his every home and away game with West Ham in the immediate future. I knew I'd snare him in the end, though my threat of introducing him to real ale and the Socialist Worker may be a while away yet.
