Your First Slough Town Match

Apologies if this topic has been raised before, however I wondered whether any of you could remember the first Slough Town match that you watched.

For me, (I have had to look at the records to see the exact date), it was the 27th Dec 1982 when Slough lost to Wokingham 1-0 in a home league game. The records on the website state that this was an evening kick off but I recall it as an afternoon game, I am probably wrong though.

I recall that it was a tight game, however the pacy Wokingham centre forward broke clear after about 80 mins to beat the Slough keeper on a one on one and score. This was at the Wexham Park Hospital end of the ground.

I did not go again until Sept 1989 when I saw a Tuesday night game against Aveley in some type of cup/shield game. Slough won 2-0 after extra time after the scores were 0-0 after 90 mins, however I cannot see any record of this game on the Slough website. I have been to 95+% of all of the home games since this match however probably only about 20% of away games.

Does anybody else remember their first game?

Home friendly v QPR back in August 1980. Think it ended 0-0.  Then came back to watch the first game of the season v Dagenham (3-3) and of course won 3 trophies by end of season. I thought I was a lucky charm!

26th August 61  First home game of 61/62 season  Rebels had lost both away games heavily  so wasnt that hopeful however it was a 3-0 victory for the Rebels  not as easy as it looked on paper as keeper Geoff Redford made a couple of great saves from close shots The next Saturday Slough were away to much fancied Dagenham and won 3-4! They also had victories against Sutton United and Redhill in the FA Cup during September. 59 years ago!

I was just a very young boy, but I remember my Dad & Grandad took me. I'm sure I went to others around this time but this is the only one that sticks in the memory. Grandad passed away in 1958 and I don't remember any other games that he was at with us, so perhaps this is why I can recall it.

Gawd, I can't even remember who we played.

Mid 80's (86 maybe).

I remember when we played Swansea in the FACup, my dad wouldn't let me go to Swansea with him and my late grandad (although I begged him to take me), so I know I was watching us at Wexham Park that season.

I know it was the season we had Devon Petty, winger Kenny something? Someone called Watt too? (I am not cheating and looking up their names)….

I also remember, that as a young kid, we'd be between watching the game and taking a ball over to the football pitch that was located behind the goal (where the golf range is now) and especially midweek night games with the floodlights from the main pitch just getting onto the training pitch. There used to be quite a few of us getting muddy and having a kick round, with us running up to the pitch side when a goal went in or roar from the crowd.

Saw the odd game at the Dolphin, taken reluctantly by a non sports loving Dad, likewise to Wembley for the Amateur Cup final.  Odd games at Wexham Park over the years, but first game on a regular basis was Swansea away in the FA Cup.

Looked up the match details and indeed it was December 1986 losing 3-0 at Swansea.

The winger was Kenny Wilson.

No player called Watt but players with similar names were Keith White and Paul Waites.

Keith (Chalkie) White played 466 games scoring 87 goals and Paul Waites played 100 games scoring 14 goals.

Ahhh, Paul Waites it was. Didn't he play with his shirt hanging out at the back?

John Watt,

midfield late eighties. Reserves manager eighties/early nineties good coaching younger reserve players. Also very useful sub for first team rarely started but never let us down.

Think he went to M/head, manager /coach?

Late 80s, think it was friendly at Wexham Park vs. Poole? Think it ended up with us losing 3-5 or some ridiculous score, but as a very young kid I did spend a lot of the time running up and over the grassbanks which were there before the Golf End terrace was built.
