3spirit
Just watched the Jacko interview. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I can't say Jamie has ever been a favourite of mine but I've never questioned his loyalty to our club. He has proved to be a top club man over the years which does deserve recognition by the fans. I thought he was at his best when he played under Derek Sweetman, and then Darren Wilkinson despite the scorelines. He deserved to be at the club when Steve Bateman took over,as he was on top of his game at that point and for awhile was superb. If I remember right I think he got injured and couldn't play for a large part of the season and so Steve tried out a couple of other keepers, one of which was Rob Bullivant from Windsor. I thought Jamie was desperately unlucky with the injury then, as to me he was a better goalkeeper than Rob. When Jamie did eventually get back to playing, Ricky Perks then provided him stiff competition. To be honest, I thought at the time Ricky had the slight edge on him but there certainly wasn't a lot in it.Paper thin really, Steve Bateman obviously thought otherwise, picking Jamie in the latter part of the season and for the play offs. Being an old fogie I have not clue about Hashtag United [now enlightened by what Jamie told us in the interview] but it's good to see that he still offers something to the game. I was most impressed by his 6 a side Slough team and what he said about all those players. The one thing I would like to put Jamie straight on, is that it does mean a hell of a lot when players are willing to put their body on the line for a club no matter what the results are, and what they are getting paid. As a fan I always appreciate the efforts of teams that are ready to roll their sleeves up and fight for the cause, whether they are in a relegation dog fight or flying high for promotion. Jamie shouldn't underestimate his contribution to Slough FC. It might not have garnered awards and great achievements but it was appreciated by those who care about the club. Tickled me when Jamie said about being a brash youngster[aren't we all?]. From the outside looking in, Brian McDermott did seem a stickler for everything being run professionally, as I remember that he insisted on blazers and ties to be worn on match days [and possibly more]. Something that I don't believe was adhered to previous. I won't be asking Jacko for his autograph if I see him in a local boozer but I would be tempted to buy him a pint ! grandad
Jacko is a legend. Top lad. Back in the days of the all conquering Suburban League team, I and a couple of other fans who worked Saturday mornings and could not get to the away Conference games, used to watch the kids play instead. Our reward pints with the players and invites to their socials. Great days. I was one of those 200 odd at the Newport IOW game, made the trip down from Cheltenham and stayed over on the Saturday night. My lad now almost 23, came to a few games in this neck of the woods with me when he was much younger, under 10, and at one, not sure where but possibly Cinderford, Jacko gave him his gloves after the game, he still has them. I hope you get your fourth decade game mate...
Sir Rebel1965
Jackos interview/chat reminded me of the "overseas game" at Newpot IOW, and the relegation party against the wombles - as he said it was dark times for the club financially under Martin "2 weeks" Deaner, but there was the old hard core there and was also glad he mentioned the slippery pole - Mr Slough Town! It is great that local players remain loyal to the club, and the more we can nurture that the stronger the relationship between the players and fans.
