Interview with Brian McDermott

Best manager he has come across in non-league football.

Best coach he has come across.

His best decision about a player when at Slough and Reading. His biggest gaffe as manager at Slough and Reading.

His best mate in football, or someone he has the utmost respect for in football.

His favourite non-league grounds.

His favourite league grounds.

Most talented footballer he's managed and/or played with.

Why did he decide to make Cliff Hercules a centre half and not keep him up front? Was it a mutual decision between them, or solely his idea?

What made him adopt a 3-5-2 at Slough?

You forgot to add: would you like to go on a date with me?

If I was gay then I might but as I'm not, it is a silly suggestion.

Good intervuew Ade

I went to the under 15s game at Anfield not shaw if I went on slough town or the ICI coach.

The driver went to goodison park he either had a bad sat nav or someone wanted to have a look at the stadium.

There was a big crowd and during the game every foul and when slough goalie got injured which affected him the team and result the abuse given by the Liverpool supporters was disgraceful and have hated that club ever since.

You must have been on the ICI coach as I was on the Slough Town coach with my father and that did not go to Anfield via Goodison Park.

I enjoyed the interview, too. Not sure Brian is used to camera's on laptops, as we got a great view up his hooter! ha ha ha!

Seriously though, really good of Brian to give an interview for our club, as thankfully he hasn't let all his experiences/relatively successes in his footballing career go to his head, and so hasn't forgotten his roots. There's a lot to be said for that.

Didn't quite go as in depth as I had hoped for, not because of Ade's questioning, it just seemed Brian struggled to enlighten us too much on a lot of his clubs but nontheless I found most of what he said interesting.

Who's up next?

3Spirit I was hoping he would go more in depth might be he was time limited.

Am I right in saying as well as semi final of fa trophy we were also about 8th in the league last game of the season away at Kidderminster I was behind the goal and we were  saying like Brian said if we can just add to the squad the next season would be even better.

And then all hope and aspirations were taken away from us all to be demoted. Being on that coach gong to Sutton on that first game away was awful knowing we should be travelling else where in the Conference.

My dad was on night shift at ICI so remember being with his workmates on the coach. There social club always had a coach running to see the England games good times.

There are two main differences doing these interviews with ex Slough members, firstly, unlike current squad who I’ve chatted too many times , I didn’t know Brian so it was 2 strangers having a conversation and secondly I didn’t want to take up too much oh his time as he had made a space in his schedule.
Also as a professional working in football and wanting to continue doing so, especially with the job cuts announced by Arsenal, he probably didn’t want to say anything derogatory which would harm his future

Loved his reminiscence about being a ballboy at the Dolphin-where they were much needed. Reminded me of one of his predecessors in that role-the inimitable "Ginger".

I understand Brian being guarded in what he said but he was a bit too tight lipped. Perhaps it's a generational thing? As most of the older ones on this forum know, everything was hush-hush and top secret years ago, and so some people can't break this habit as they have been taught by their peers to be this way.

What a difference between Brian, and our refreshingly honest, open and direct, current incumbents in the Slough hot seat/s Neil and Jon.             I understand that there will always be sensitive issues and certain types of information best not shared but we're talking about football here NOT Government secrets !

Why people think they are important in football is beyond me?

Remember it is only a silly game with twenty two men kicking a round object about. Yes, we all love watching it and talking about it but in the big things in life, it really doesn't matter a jot.

It's understandable when the young think football is the be all end all but when older blokes, who you could argue have immersed themselves too much into one field of work, can't lighten up about their subject, I think they should, and need to, take a 'break' from their game.

Perhaps Brian was having an off day [we all have them] and just wasn't really up for the interview but it's a shame that Brian couldn't have been more open, like Neil and Jon,as that interview could have been great.

Oh well, we must remember, it takes all sorts to make a world.
