REBEL MATTERS
Having discussion with my 78 year old father.... Can anybody tell me / remember who our goal keeper was v Skelmersdale in 1960’s?
Matt
Looks like it was Chris Reynolds. There’s a big database on the club’s website which you can search by player name and opposition name. Our record against Skelmersdale is here: https://www.sloughtownfc.net/opposition/312/Skelmersdale
Irishadrian
I was at the match at Skem. In 1967 GK was Reynolds A memorable game because hundreds of the Skem supporters had made top hats from cardboard approx 2 ft high so it was like standing with giants on the terraces. Was that really 53 years ago?
Irishadrian
On the way home we stopped at motorway services and found lots of WBA supporters who had just lost the league cup final to QPR 3-2 so a lot of banter and comiserating ensued.

Irishadrian
Skem were used to getting crowds of 1000/1500 for league games The March 67 match with the Rebels attracted 7500 which was a record never beaten.

Only played 30 games for the Rebels but had 15 clean sheets and was on the losing side just 7 times.

carols52
First game at the Dolphin in 67 will always be remembered for the missed penalty by Chris Mullen when we were 2-0 up.

My first Rebels match was against Wembley on 12th. April 1969. On 12th. February 1970, Rebels drew 0--0 at home to Skelmersdale United, despite Steve Heighway ripping them to pieces. He had gone to Liverpool before the replay but Skelmersdale United still won it 3-0.

3spirit
I wasn't there but one thing I do agree with you all on, Steve Heighway was one hell of a player. He was a favourite of mine as a kid.

Slight correction to the above SG, I remember sitting in the clubhouse at Skem with Steve Heighway so was convinced he played against us that day. He did indeed sign for Liverpool at that time, but as you will see below he didn't actually leave until the following season. February 28, 1970 Steve Heighway, Skelmersdale United’s star striker, signed for Liverpool to-day – minutes before he took the field for Skelmersdale in their vital Amateur Cup quarterfinal replay with Slough. A Liverpool club official went to White Moss Park to sign Heighway on amateur forms. Heighway will continue to play for Skelmersdale this season, but is likely to turn professional with Liverpool next season. Heighway, a 21-years-old Manchester University student from Coventry, is one of Skem’s leading scorers this season and has become the target of several clubs. Everton, Coventry, and Leeds have all been interested in signing the striker who was on Manchester City’s books at one time. I always wondered how Skelmersdale United could have won the replay 3-0 without Steve Heighway. And now just over fifty years later I know how - he was playing!
