Academy 23

Excellent news on our new partnership with Academy 23.

I also note that they are a full time academy, a bit like the one we set up a few years ago.

Being full time I would assume their funding comes from discovering players and getting fees from the clubs they eventually join.

Gary Waddock was announced in April as a full time coach for A23 but I believe he’s now left.

With the way finances will be unless you have a rich and willing owner(s) then the vast majority of clubs will have to do what Hemel are doing or do something innovative like we are. It’s a win win really as we have nothing to lose and we will hopefully unearth some more Dan Roberts.

I did ask the question on Twitter (no reply yet...) if it’s an exclusive partnership or not as that would obviously make a big difference. I doubt we’re funding them, we’re just giving them a pathway to a decent level of football which could they lead to full time football elsewhere. A23 is the first stepping stone and we’re the next, if a player does well with us their next move is likely to be a full time club.

So where's their funding coming from to be full time or is it just full time training?

Whatever player we pick up I would think there will be a sell on clause.

They’re already up and running so whoever is funding them will continue the same. Difference now is those players who are deemed good enough now have a direct route into first team football. And for A23 it shows potential players there’s a decent ‘pathway’ (seems to be the favoured buzzword!) into senior football at a decent level. I would guess if Slough think the player has potential then they’d be placed on contract. If they do get sold for a fee then I wouldn’t be surprised if A23 get some sort of cut.

a friend of mine has been invited to come and join them as a trainee has been playing at a club at a lower level than us while he attended an academy at winchester uni, from what i hear he was highly rated though i have never seen him play, he is a local lad and has watched slough play .

Just listened to the Ashley Smith interview, I know I'm a bit late posting on this topic but it sounds a win-win situation for Slough. Looking forward to watching  a good few Academy 23 games, too, when it get's going.
