As anticipated, Potton United Reserves were involved in a thriller at Manor Fields last night (Wednesday) going down narrowly 4-3 to Milton Keynes Irish Reserves in a Uhlsport United Counties League Reserve Division fixture however that only tells half the story. The hosts raced into a 4-0 lead but rather than throw in the towel at that point Potton United bravely rolled up their sleeves and proceeded to get back into the proceedings, in the end they just ran out of time when pressing for an equaliser.

Although Potton United's Reserve side ply their trade in the Uhlsport United Counties League Reserve Division they are still eligible to enter the Bedfordshire FA Intermediate Challenge Cup and have been drawn away to Cranfield United Reserves in the First Round of the competition on Saturday 26 September, kick off 2.30pm. It's arguably the toughest draw they could have received however if successful they will host the winners of the Totternhoe Reserves v Sharnbrook tie at the Hutchinson Hollow on Saturday 24  October, that could well give Karen a fixture headache as Potton United's First team are due to meet Colney Heath at home that afternoon in the SSML Premier Division. Last Saturday Potton United Reserves took care of Huntingdon Town Reserves, winning 3-0, and will next travel to Rothwell Corinthians Reserves on Saturday before hosting Yaxley Reserves next Tuesday (22 September):

Karen must have breathed a huge sigh of relief on Saturday when Potton United Reserves were well beaten 8-3 at Crawley Road by Cranfield United Reserves in a Bedfordshire FA Intermediate Challenge Cup First Round tie, had they won it would have created a fixture conundrum for her during October. The Reserve side are back in Uhlsport United Counties League Reserve Division action next Saturday (3 October) when they entertain Desborough Town Reserves followed by a midweek trip to Willen Road to meet Newport Pagnell Town Reserves on Tuesday 6 October. Last Tuesday (22 September) the Reserve side were unfortunately invoved in an abandonment at the Hutchinson Hollow shortly before the interval against Yaxley Reserves when a Potton United player fell awkwardly on his shoulder and back and an ambulance had to be called, the game will be re-arranged. The First team meanwhile look forward to their third SSML Premier Division fixture of the new campaign tomorrow (Tuesday) when they travel to Newport Pagnell Town having beaten Eynesbury Rovers and disappointingly lost to Wembley thus far, both at home, having exited the FA Cup last Wednesday at Grays Athletic (see link) they can still look forward to a home FA Vase Second Qualifying Round tie against Essex Senior League Clapton on 10 October.

Both Potton United Reserves recent Uhlsport United Counties League Reserve Division fixtures against Desborough Rangers last Saturday (3 October) and at Willen Road last night were called off, just to rub Dead Sea salt into their wounds next Saturday's Reserve Division fixture at Harborough Town Reserves is also postponed as the Leicestershire Club's First team have a home FA Vase Second Qualifying Round tie, as do Potton United's First team when they entertain Essex Senior League Clapton followed by a League fixture at London Colney the following Tuesday (13 October). The First team were twiddling their thumbs last Saturday when their SSML Premier Division fixture at Oxhey Jets was the first of many to be called off however they were victorious last night at the Hutchinson Hollow in a League outing against Tring Athletic (see match programme and report), Aaron McCardle with a brace and Liam Andrews scored in a 3-1 win despite going a goal behind to the beleaguered Cow Lane Club who have lost all of their six league games so far. This followed on from a hard fought 2-2 draw at Willen Road on Tuesday 29 September with Niall Jones and, who else, Aaron McCardle netting, the home side finished with nine men however Potton United failed to capitalise:

Potton United Reserves have played the least number of Uhlsport United Counties League Reserve Division games this season for various reasons, whereas Huntingdon Town Reserves for example have fulfilled twelve fixtures thus far Potton United Reserves have only completed five and, as a result, are languishing second from bottom in the table. It's an unsatisfactory state of affairs for the Reserve side who have at least won two of those five League games early on in the campaign, there has also been a disappointing 8-3 defeat at Cranfield United Reserves in the Bedfordshire FA Intermediate Challenge Cup First Round. Meanwhile the First team have been in action on a regular basis and sit in fifth spot in the SSML Premier Division table with five victories from eight League games played, see match programmes below from all of their seven home fixtures so far including a very disappointing FA Vase Second Qualifying Round 3-1 defeat to Essex Senior League Clapton, following the 2-1 First Qualifying Round home win over Biggleswade United a month or so ago:

Potton United should have been entertaining Petersfield Town in the FA Vase First Round proper tomorrow afternoon but instead they travel to Bell Close to take on Leighton Town in a SSML Premier Division fixture. The home defeat to Essex Senior League Clapton (see match report) on 10 October was very disappointing despite being without the injured Sam Willis and Callum Wilson, leading at the interval through an early George Brinkman goal made it all the more hard to swallow and the first period also saw a penalty stop from keeper Josh Mollison. The Reserve side at least had a Uhlsport United Counties League Reserve Division fixture on Tuesday evening when Cogenhoe United Reserves visited the Hutchinson Hollow however they came away with a 3-0 win, tomorrow the Reserves entertain Rothwell Corinthians Reserves hoping not to record their fifth successive defeat:

It was an old fashioned thriller at Bell Close on Saturday 31 October (see match report, photographs and the match programme), I gather there were some handbags around the seventy minute mark involving all 22 players and some Coaching staff which resulted in George Brinkman seeing red as well as Leighton Town's Captain Jordon Frederick. Luke Pyman was later dismissed by pernickety Referee Mario Stetakovic who also brandished yellow cards like confetti, the dismissal of Pyman arguably cost Potton United the game when they conceded very late on having led 2-1 and also 3-2 at the interval. The encounter had everything you can think of and will be remembered for many a long year:

I know very little, if anything, about Potton as a place, what's it like, it looks very 'sleepy' from these photographs:

Nice photographs, and match report, from Oadby Town v Potton United in a 2013/14 United Counties League Division One fixture, at Wigston Road on Saturday 19 April 2014. Oadby Town won 5-1 on their way to promotion to the Premier Division that season along with Eynesbury Rovers, Potton United had to wait until the 2017/18 campaign before escaping Division One on promotion and joined the SSML Premier Division instead of remaining in the United Counties League where the Club had plied its trade ever since the 1961/62 campaign :

Very sad news to report that Potton United Club President Colin Buxton died today after a short illness, Colin had been involved with the Club for over sixty years when first becoming a Committee member in 1958 and undertaking many different roles thereafter, he will be very much missed by everyone associated with the Club and our thoughts are with his family at this sad time. In 2008 Colin was asked to write a piece for the Potton History Society newsletter when he had achieved fifty years with Potton United, I hope the Club won't mind me posting that fascinating article here. RIP Colin:

I first started supporting Potton United in 1957, just before I moved to Potton. Once I became a regular supporter I was asked by the late Eddie ‘The Egg’ Gurney if I would join the Committee, which I did and here I remain 1958-2008. I soon got involved with the Reserves who were playing in the Bedford League. I was linesman and trainer, sometimes playing if we were short. To further my knowledge of First Aid, I joined Potton St John’s Ambulance Brigade (long since defunct) and passed all the examinations. In the early days I used to come home from away games, write a report to give to the local press correspondent and was paid 2 shillings and six pence. After several years I was asked to become First Team Trainer which involved better grounds to visit, better dressing rooms and a cup of tea at half-time. Also, with the expectation of a more knowledgeable trainer, Charles McCormack, Manager of Wellingborough and Physio to Northampton Town arranged a course at Cambridge. One evening a week for 6 weeks, then an exam. Off I went on my bicycle after work, thankfully there was very little on the roads in those days. I should not be riding after dark with my poor sense of balance. The final night was held at one of the large hotels in Cambridge with the buffet being provided by the drugs firm whose product we had been using and my wife was allowed to attend. We were given a talk, then a question and answer session to conclude and I passed the exam. In those days I was friendly with the Desborough trainer, who always had some sweets in his pocket. Desborough, however, was the coldest place I had ever been to, even with every item of clothing I had with me was worn under my track suit. Then there was the ride home in the back of Derek Inskip’s car with no heat at the back in those days and inevitably ‘Skip’ having to stop for a ‘comfort break’. Best times were winning the League and the League Cup. Also we won the Beds Senior Cup at Luton Town’s Ground and it is extremely disappointing that we have not won it since. Eventually I got tired of the travelling and being committed to Saturday's and mid-week, often going without a meal after work, so I decided to call it a day at the end of 1978-79 season. At the Annual Dinner I was presented with a tankard from the club and players at that time, I was very proud to receive that and it holds many memories. I continued as a committee member doing whatever was needed and doing a lot of work on the ground during the summer months. It was, I think, in 1990 or 1991 my wife and I took over running the tea hut, which we carried on for thirteen seasons, rarely missing a First or Reserve team match. We had a good name for ourselves and visiting supporters would tell us they came because they knew they would get looked after. Unfortunately this had to come to an end as my back problems worsened and I could not carry on with the standing or lifting. Everything had to be taken home for storage, trips to the cash and carry were frequent with a large freezer in use. Two years after an operation on my back I am much improved but still don’t want to stand too long and I am also past my active use by date. I am not happy that I cannot do more but maybe I have done my bit. There have been happy times and sad times. Getting relegated was not very good for anyone at the club and getting back was a struggle. Winning cups is always good and perhaps the best was when we won the East Anglian Cup against Stamford, who had just won the League with us in the middle of the table. On the night we felt that Stamford thought they had won before they left the dressing room, however they were in for a shock as Potton were convincing winners. Stamford’s Manager, Steve Evans, was very disappointed but he did give Potton the champagne that he hoped to be drinking. We have had many laughs including when Percy Beech dived into the bath at Luton Town and also when Terry King went mad when Albert Frost tore a muscle while doing his boots up at Wolverton in the days before substitutes were allowed. These are all part of the game I would not have wanted to miss and I have at least been part of the history of Potton United FC.
