Referees/Assistant Referees

Recommended Posts

I can see now why PetetheGreek always holds his flag out at that angle as he was taught to however, strangely, he runs like that too with the flag outstretched in front of him and I have never been able to work out why rather than just keeping the flag down by his side. As for the 2002 World Cup Final Assistant Referee, that is Philip Sharp, well spotted, he is working for the Hertfordshire FA as a Referee Development Officer, I remember when he was Officiating at Villa Park once he got hit by a coin thrown from the crowd and suffered a cut head, it was a nasty incident (see below):

At the 46 minute SSML Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 27 June the level of Official fees came up and it was stated that these would be reviewed due to the current drop in the price of fuel, I expect it has got PetetheGreek worried as he is likely to lose out this season when car sharing with other Officials who are on the same game:

  1. FEES AND FINES TARIFF

The Chairman said that these would be the same as last season except for the concession of a waiver of subscriptions for continuing member clubs. He also said the level of Officials’ fees would be reviewed due to the current drop in the price of fuel, but not until a firm date for the new season had been confirmed.

More guidance for Match Officials to observe in the current climate, I am not sure whether PetetheGreek owns a tracksuit, polo shirt and trainers, from memory he always arrived at a game in his Sunday best, suited and booted:

The FA have postponed June and July fitness checks for Non League Referees at Steps 3-5 level, each summer Referees are obliged to undergo a fitness check ahead of a new season. The postponement indicates that the 2020/21 campaign is very unlikely to start on time unless the FA decide to forgo the fitness checks

I see that the FA have now, as predicted in May, forgone the annual fitness test for non league Referees following the postponement in June and July and, worringly, they will not have to undergo a test this summer, instead Referees must have passed a test at the start of the 2019/20 season and that will be sufficient to meet their fitness assessment criteria for this campaign. It's not ideal is it as some older Referees will have gained weight since last year and would possibly struggle to pass the test this time.

If PTG has kept off the kebabs he should be ok. After all, he only has to run half the length of the pitch in each half.

Just out of interest did any SSML affiliated match Officials down tools on Saturday 4 March 2017, or rather their whistles, cards and flags, and go on strike as was suggested in this article due to campaign by Referee Ryan Hampson calling on Officials across the UK to boycott grassroots games that weekend in protest at the treatment they receive, it would have been unfortunate as it happened to coincide with Fans Day:

It was a daft idea and I gather it had very little support.

What's the worst incident that has ever happened to you during a match out of interest in terms of abuse and possibly violence, I know that you were never flavour of the month with Kentish Town's Tommy Kanaris were you and your paths crossed quite often, both in the SSML and Islington Midweek League.

I've had verbal abuse with the odd threat.

I once had an A/R's flag stick thrown at me if that counts as violence.

I had no problem with Tommy Kanaris.

So nobody has ever given you a Glasgow kiss then as was the case with young Referee Ryan Hampson who campaigned for strike action, I  know Ben Furneaux took a lot of stick in the beginning, around 2006, when he was still soaking behind the ears as he used to issue cards like confetti but he became the best Official I've ever come across in Non League. This was embedded in the earlier link and you may have missed it:

Yes, I know you Officiated with Ben on quite a lot of games, we didn't see eye to eye at first after a game between Kentish Town and Brache Sparta on 23 August 2006, when I first crossed paths with him, but we became good friends, unlike you and me:

What your history with petethegreek then? I've always wondered but never asked how it all started?

It's strange as we were just talking about violence on Referees, one was unceremoniously punched in the face last Sunday during a pre-season friendly game after showing a player a red card, the team in question, Sporting Club de Mundial, are in the Hackney and Leyton Sunday Premier League and only formed recently, this is going to be their first season so what a start, the Club's mission statement is below:

The idea is to engender a long overdue reassessment of what grassroots football is all about by creating Sporting Club de MUNDIAL: what used to be a semi-fictional team that mostly involved us getting walloped by M&C Saatchi will now feature a men’s and women’s team (alongside drop-in sessions for local players and MUNDIAL readers) who remind us why we love football, with the players selected to represent the qualities that make us all nostalgic for how we fell for the game in the first place.

Hopefully the police and the football authorities take swift and decisive action.

I think the Club (Sporting Club de Mundial) should have been closed down after what happened or certainly thrown out of the Hackney & Leyton Sunday Premier League, they are operating under totally false pretences, the incident was captured on video for all to see and attracted press coverage in all the National papers:

The idea is to engender a long overdue reassessment of what grassroots football is all about by creating Sporting Club de MUNDIAL: what used to be a semi-fictional team that mostly involved us getting walloped by M&C Saatchi will now feature a men’s and women’s team (alongside drop-in sessions for local players and MUNDIAL readers) who remind us why we love football, with the players selected to represent the qualities that make us all nostalgic for how we fell for the game in the first place.

Focussing on community and making people fall in love with football again, Sporting Club de Mundial will be the representation of what makes football so special to us and it’ll happen every Sunday morning down the Marshes.

Carrying the values of MUNDIAL, the aim of the club is for it to become something that kids can aspire to be part of on the field, but also through the opportunities we want to create off it.

Referee Mr Satyam Toki is still awaiting Police action following the violent assault during a game involving Sporting Club de Mundial on Sunday 9 August, also I wonder what disciplinary action the Hackney & Leyton Sunday League have taken against the Club who 'focus on Community and making people fall in love with football again':
