A Question For The Oldies

One of the worst games I ever saw  was a Slough Town v Grays Athletic match  90 mins of boredom and a 0-1 loss but what made it stick in my mind was the venue  For whatever reason it was played at Belfast Avenue  sometime early/mid  sixties  I've been told by another old Rebel supporter  that I must have dreamt it

Anyone have any recall of this game or access to records that confirm I don't  need some  pre-Alzheimer tests!

Before my time watching the Rebels (didn't start until 1993) but fortunately we have an excellent resource of the website which lists all our matches!

Under History (along the top bar) and then into Historical Archive will let you search for any player or opponent. Grays matches were:

https://www.sloughtownfc.net/opposition/163/Grays-Athletic

I can see a 0-1 home defeat in 1969 but no report at the moment but do have a copy of a report to get written up. Says the game was at the Dolphin in front of 950, most of whom had left the poor game before the end.

Thanks Gary  I've found a post on Non League matters from Aug 2016 from Paludian  who says he watched a Corinthian League and an Athenian League Ist team game at Belfast Avenue  when the Dolphin was not available  I'll  do a bit more digging

I remember going to this game cannot remember opposition was about 1965 midweek game KO about 6pm late April no flood lights then, would have been an Athenian game maybe the year we won the leauge, played there because of midweek dog meeting.

The 0-1 home defeat to Grays Athletic is shown on the Slough Town opposition archives as being played on Saturday 11th. October 1969. It is the only 0-1 defeat to Grays Athletic shown between 22nd. April 1946 and 16th. December 2000.

I have it in my mind (but not that I can yet find on paper) that the final home game of our Athenian League Division I championship season, 1964/5-a 5-0 victory over Eastbourne-was played at the Centre Stadium for the reason Carol suggests. Looks to have been a pretty typical game for that season with goalscorers Lowen 3, Gogan and Reardon.

My contemporary records also indicate that we lost 0-1 to Grays Athletic in a friendly on what I annotated as a neutral ground on 10 November 1962. I think that was the other game played at the Centre Stadium.

It's the sort of thing that you did when you were a young supporter back in the day and this interweb thingy hadn't been invented. I even have information, not quite complete, about reserve team appearances and goals scored for a couple of seasons.

Since the Centre Stadium was under discussion I looked again at Kerry Miller's entry on Slough Town in his "History of Non-League Football Grounds". I remember both the Centre Stadium and the Dolphin as they were before the latter was extensively remodelled in the early 1960's. I think that when comparing the two in that state he is a degree too complimentary about the former. The only feature I can recall being better at Belfast Avenue in those days was the playing surface.

Well done. Not sure that I've got one even though I collected them assiduously at the time.

Remind us all how much it was to get in!

Cannot remember how much to get in but the programme states a season ticket for adult is£1.7.6d(£1.37p) that would have got you 15 home games. Also found out that the reason for playing at Centre stadium was that the reserves got to play at Dolphin that day against Eastbourne they only needed one point to clinch title, bit strange that one.
